TRADITIONAL STAR CHARTS IN CHINA AND KOREA (중국과 한국의 전통 천문도)

  • China and Korea have a long history of star charts, dating from the prehistoric period. Historically, Korean astronomy has been deeply influenced by China over the last two thousand years, particularly on constellation system. Therefore, Chinese and Korean traditional star charts have many similarities in terms of shape of constellation, number of star, and so forth. Korean star charts, however, have lots of unique characteristics distinguishing from Chinese ones, such as, size of star and position of constellation. Overall knowledge of the Chinese star chart is required to study the Korean star chart. In this paper, I focus on introducing selected star charts in China and Korea. Although this review is very limited, I hope that this paper is helpful in research in the field of historical astronomy.

  • The 6th East Asian Meeting of Astronomy was held just at the time of 400 years after the discovery of SN (supernova) 1604 and its pre-maximum observation by the astronomers both from the East and the West in the 17th century. It has a special meaning and is interesting to look back on the historical observation of SN 1604. In this paper, we only limit to concern the Chinese observation on SN 1604.

  • The KVN(Korean VLBI Network)-style simultaneous multi-frequency receiving mode is demonstrated to be promising for mm-VLBI observations. Recently, other Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) facilities all over the globe start to implement compatible optics systems. Simultaneous dual/multi-frequency VLBI observations at mm wavelengths with international baselines are thus possible. In this paper, we present the results from the first successful simultaneous 22/43 GHz dual-frequency observation with KaVA(KVN and VERA array), including images and astrometric results. Our analysis shows that the newly implemented simultaneous receiving system has brought a significant extension of the coherence time of the 43 GHz visibility phases along the international baselines. The astrometric results obtained with KaVA are consistent with those obtained with the independent analysis of the KVN data. Our results thus confirm the good performance of the simultaneous receiving systems for the nonKVN stations. Future simultaneous observations with more global stations bring even higher sensitivity and micro-arcsecond level astrometric measurements of the targets.

  • We present the results from our comparisons of HCN and HCO+ (J=4-3) with HI and $H_2$ gas in NGC 6946, a sample from a mapping study of the dense molecular gas in the strongest star-forming galaxies (MALATANG). The MALATANG is one of the JCMT legacy surveys on the nearest 23 IR-brightest galaxies beyond the Local Group, which aims to study the relations of dense molecular gas with more general cool gas such as atomic and molecular hydrogen gas, and star formation properties in active galaxies. In this work, we particularly focus on the comparisons between the JCMT HCN/HCO+ (J=4-3) data and the THINGS HI/the NRO CO (J=1-0) data. We probe the dense molecular gas mass as a function of HI and $H_2$ mass in different locations in the central ${\sim}1.5kpc^2$ region. We discuss how the excess/deficit of $HI/H_2$ or total cool gas ($HI+H_2$) mass controls the presence and/or the fraction of dense molecular gas.

ACCURACY OF LAMOST DR1 STELLAR PARAMETERS

  • We adopt the PASTEL catalog combined with SIMBAD radial velocities as a testing standard to validate the stellar parameters (effective temperature $T_{eff}$, surface gravity log g, metallicity [Fe/H] and radial velocity $V_r$) from the first data release (DR1) of The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. After applying data reduction and temperature constraints to the sample obtained by cross-identification, we compare the stellar parameters from DR1 and PASTEL. The results show that the DR1 results are reliable under certain conditions. We derive a dispersion of 110 K, 0.19 dex, 0.11 dex and $4.91kms^{-1}$ in specified effective temperature ranges, for $T_{eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] and $V_r$ respectively. Systematic errors are negligible except for those of $V_r$. In addition, for stars with PASTEL [Fe/H] < -1:5, the metallicities in DR1 are systematically higher than those in PASTEL.

Testing LCDM with eBOSS / SDSS

  • In this talk I will review recent progress that the SDSS-IV / eBOSS collaboration has made in constraining cosmology from the clustering of galaxies, quasars and the Lyman-alpha forest. The SDSS-IV / eBOSS collaboration has measured the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift space distortion (RSD) features in the correlation function in redshift bins from z~0.15 to z~2.33. These features constitute measurements of angular diameter distances, Hubble distances, and growth rate measurements. A number of consistency tests have been performed between the BAO and RSD datasets and additional cosmological datasets such as the Planck cosmic microwave background constraints, the Pantheon Type Ia supernova compilation, and the weak lensing results from the Dark Energy Survey. Taken together, these joint constraints all point to a broad consistency with the standard model of cosmology LCDM + GR, though they remain in tension with local measurements of the Hubble parameter.
