  • The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of social participation among female baby boomers. The key research questions were asked in what kind of activities do female baby boomers engage as social participation? The in-depth interview was used with 11 female baby boomers who were born between 1955 to 1963. The interview text were analyzed by the qualitative study method. The findings are as follows. First, the most common type of social participation was having hobbies and leisure activities, and the other were participating in religious activities, learning activities, volunteer activities and on-line club activities. Second, social participation gave them meanings such as joy, satisfaction, and experiences of seeing the new world as well as opportunities to make up low sense of self-esteem formed in their young age. Third, they were considering it was time to change their social participation. The cases who were actively engaging in social participation considered old age as 'the process of reducing social participation'. Some other cases considered to 'share hobbies with spouse', and to 'achieve new goals and dreams'. The results showed that female baby boomers started their social participation in their middle ages when they became free from their children's education. The level of the involvement in social participation was reduced in their old age. Surprisingly, some interviewees planned to accomplish their dreams and goals that they haven't achieved yet. These differences among the cases could be attributed to the individual characteristics such as personality, birth order, economic and educational background, and to the social relationship.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify practical exercise performance and to define the factors related to exercise performance in middle-aged women. Methods: The researchers collected data from 206 middle-aged women, ages 40 to 59. The measurements used were a scale for degree of exercise performance, and self-efficacy scale, affect, perceived barriers and benefits related exercise, body-shape perception, and the youngest child's education stage. The data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 17.0 and SAS program using t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Exercise performance showed significant differences according to body-shape perception (F=5.45, p<.01), the youngest child's education stage (F=4.44, p<.05). Exercise performance had a significant strong positive relation with self-efficacy (r=.616), a moderate relation with self-rated health (r=.428) and with affect related exercise (r=.519), a mild relation with perceived benefits (r=.339) and with social support (r=.239), and a negative mild relation with perceived barriers (r=-.330) with 99% significance. Self-efficacy, affect, perceived barriers, and the youngest child's education stage explained 46.4% of a variance in exercise performance in middle-aged women. The factor most influencing was self-efficacy related exercise at 37.9% of the variance. Conclusion: We can conclude that self-efficacy, affect, perceived barriers, and the youngest child's education stage should be considered as important factors for developing program of middle-aged women.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate differences of governmental parts in social supports for unmarried mothers at home and those at facilities and to look at policy alternatives. Despite of the rising number of unmarried child rearing mothers in recent years, the governmental supports are not sufficient enough to aid even the most basic sustenance. The research on the governmental supports shows that unmarried child-rearing mothers at home were more aged, more employed, more educated and had children of more month ages than those at facilities. Single mothers at facilities were getting more governmental supports excluding crisis support and paternity test than those at home who appeared to be experiencing more difficulties. Based on the results from this research work, more realistic governmental policies are proposed to help a stable settlement of unmarried child-rearing mothers.

  • The purposes of this study were to clarify whether the health belief model could explain the women's adoption of sterilization and to find the factors which influence the adoption of sterilization. To achieve these purpose, 35 women, who visited the family planning hospital to undergo an surgical operation for sterilization, were selected and named the group of adoption. Also, 36 women, who have the same demographic characteristics as the group of adoption, and have no sterilization among the married women, were selected and named the group of non-adoption. The measuring instruments used in this study were made by the researchers on the basis of the results of the review of the related literatures. The validity of these instruments was examined by one professor majoring in nursing and two family plmanning practioners. The reliability was proven by calculation of Cronbach's α with data of the group of adoption. The data was analyzed by t-test, X²-test, and ANOVA using Computer SAS system. The results were following: 1. Health belief model could be said to explain whether women accept the sterilization or not, because the degrees of susceptibility and severity for future pregnancy and the degree of benefit or adoption of sterilization in the group of ad-option are higher than those of the group of non-adoption. 2. Influence of demographic variables on health belief variables was as follows. With advancing ages, degree of susceptibility increased in the group of adoption, and the higher the number of artificial abortion increased, the higher degree of barrier increased in the group of non-adoption. Suggestions for further studies and application to the nursing practice are as follows 1. If one wants to educate the non-adoption women, one would be better to give such information as to increase the perception of susceptibility, severity and benefit. 2. New instrument to measure the perceived barrier which includes such items as fear on well-ness of the existing children, objection of husband and postoperative complication, is needed. 3. A study to find the change of perception on health belief variables is needed, after education to increase the level of perceived susceptibility and severity on the future pregnancy, and benefit on sterilization is given.

  • Purpose: Fewer than 100 cases of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma have been reported in the literature since this entity was initially described by Keasbey in 1953 who called it calcifying juvenile aponeurotic fibroma. The tumor is a slowly growing, painless mass. In most cases the mass is poorly circumscribed and causes neither discomfort nor limitation of movement. Most lesions occur in children, with a peak incidence ages of 8-14 years. There is no evidence of any increased familial prevalence. Predilection sites are palm, finger, toe, but it also occurs in the wrist, forearm, elbow, upper arm, neck, abdominal wall, lumbar paravertebral area, leg and ankle. We herein describe a rare case of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma occurring on the chin with review of the literature. Methods: A 14-year-old male had painless, slowly growing mass(${\phi}2.5cm$) on a chin for a year. The tumor was excised elliptically under local anesthesia and the excisional site was repaired directly. Due pathological examination was processed. Results: Histological examination revealed an illdefined fibrous growth that extends with multiple processes into the surrounding tissue with centrally located foci of calcification. The tumor is composed of short spindled plump fibroblasts with round or ovoid nuclei separated by collagenous stroma, showing vaguely palisading pattern. Diagnosis of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma was conferred. Postoperatively, the patient did well, and the lesion had not recurred. Conclusion: Fewer than 100 cases of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma have been reported in the literature. The most common occurring sites are palm, finger & toe, but it has been reported in the wrist, forearm, elbow, upper arm, neck, abdominal wall, lumbar paravertebral area, leg and ankle. Two cases of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma occurring on the neck have been reported in the literature. To the authors knowledge, our case of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma occurring on the chin is the first to be reported.

  • The intestinal microflora of humans is an extraordinarily complex mixture of microorganisms, the majority of which are anaerobic microorganisms. The distribution of amylolytic microorganisms in the human large intestinal tract was investigated in various individuals of differing ages using anaerobic culture techniques. A large percentage of the amylolytic microorganisms present belonged to the Genus Bifidobacteria. The number of Bifidobacteria increased significantly at two years of age. Adults and children above 2 years old carried about $0.8{\times}10^9-2.0{\times}10^{10}$ colony forming units (CFU/gram) of amylolytic Bifidobacteria. Among these amylolytic Bifidobacteria, Int-57 was chosen for further studies. Between 65% and 85% of the amylase produced was secreted and the remaining amylase was bound to the cell wall facing the outside. Amylase production could be induced by starch in a stable form. When cells were grown on maltose or glucose, amylase production was much lower than on starch and amylase activity disappeared after 24 hours growth on these media. Partially purified enzymes showed optimum activity at a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ and at an optimum pH of 5.5, respectively. Heat treatment at $70^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes almost completely inactivated amylase. The hydrolysis products of starch were mainly maltose and maltotriose. Soluble starch, amylose, amylopectin, and $\gamma$-cyclodextrin($\gamma$-CD) were easily hydrolyzed. The rate of hydrolysis of $\alpha$-CD and $\beta$-CD was slower than that of $\gamma$-CD. Carboxymethyl cellulose, $\beta$-1, 3-glucan and inulin were not hydrolyzed.
