  • The purpose of this study was to seek desirable direction of science teaching and to present meaningful ideas for implementing the science curriculum and teaching materials by measuring the degree of the students' understandings on science and comparing it with those of American students. The researcher comprised 790 primary and middle school students for the study and administered them questionnaires developed by Trowbridge, Bybee, and Sund. The questionnaires were analyzed along with three categories such as science method, science theory, and the achievement of scientists. The researcher used t-test and ANOVA in order to compare the difference of their understandings in accordance with grades and gender, and later compared Korean students' understandings with those of similar aged American students administered by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) The research loathed to the overall conclusions as follows; Both primary and middle school students' understandings on science revealed positive and appeared no significant difference in gender. And it is thought that science education was being carried out hopefully to enhancing Korean students' scientific literacy, therefore, science teaching like what is implemented to the classrooms currently should be kept on in future. On the other hand, it is necessary to change primary school children's understandings on attitude and value of scientists while to change middle school students' understandings on scientific processes by experiment. Also primary school children need to understand that scientists are willing to change their ideas when new information becomes known.

  • Background: Although the cause in most cases of childhood leukemia is not known, the contribution of environmental risk factors in the context of genetic predisposition has been reported with inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to examine association of childhood leukemia with maternal factors especially during pregnancy, to help in avoiding risk factors. Materials and Methods: This case-control study included children younger than 18 years diagnosed with leukemia from 2008 to 2012. Controls were randomly selected and individually matched to cases with respect to age, sex, and residency. All variables were compared between cases and control to determine any significant association with leukemia. Results: Statistically significant associations between risk of childhood leukemia with mother's education (p=0.001), occupation (p=0.0005) and pesticides exposure (p=0.005) during pregnancy were found. However, there were no significant links with maternal age (p=0.090), history of fetal loss (0.85), history of radiography during pregnancy (p=0.400), history of drug intake (p=0.689) and infection (p=0.696) during pregnancy. Conclusions: The results showed increased risk of leukemia in children whose mothers were working in agriculture and were exposed to pesticides during pregnancy. The further study needs to be investigated to know association of various maternal risk factors with leukemia which remained unknown in this study.

  • This study examines the effect of oral narration learning for children's forest fairy tales on self-emotional regulation and community spirit cultivation. To achieve this aim, experiments were conducted involving 40 children in S city during 16 sessions over a period of 8 weeks. Findings showed that the experimental group with oral narration learning regarding forest fairy tales was higher than the control group, confirming the usefulness of oral narration learning for forest fairy tales. In particular, the experimental group was higher than the control group in basic lifestyle, community spirit, sociality development and self-awareness of community spirit factors. In other words, children can focus their attention on fairy tales by reading, listening and directly experiencing fairy tale materials in nature as communication with nature in forest experience activities, and can collaborate with peers based on their emotional connection with nature. Their ability to practice principles and order as well as to improve relationships with peers and increase self-emotional regulation is enhanced through experience with fairy tale stories. Such results imply that the utilization of forest fairy tales needs to be enhanced, as forest fairy tale-linked activities have a positive educational effect on community spirit cultivation as well as self-emotional regulation.

  • The purpose of this research was to confirm one of constructivists' assumptions that even children 조o are with low reasoning ability can make reflective abstracting ability and cognitive structures by this ability can make generation ability of new knowledge by themselves. To investigate the assumption, learner-centered instruction were implemented to 2nd grade classroom located in Suseong Gu, DaeGu City and with lesson plans which initially were developed by Burns and corrected by the researchers. Recordings videoed using 2 video cameras, observations, instructions, children's activity worksheets, instruction journals were analyzed using multiple tests for qualitative analysis. Some conclusions are drawn from the results. First, even children with low reasoning ability can construct mathematical knowledge on multiplication in their own. ways, Thus, teachers should not compel them to learn a learning lesson's goals which is demanded in traditional instruction, with having belief they have reasoning ability. Second, teachers need to have the perspectives of respects out of each child in their classroom and provide some materials which can provoke children's cognitive conflict and promote thinking with the recognition of effectiveness of learner-centered instruction. Third, students try to develop their ability of reflective and therefore establish cognitive structures such as webs, not isolated and fragmental ones.

  • This study's aim was to find a patterns of network dynamics focused on multicultural education contents within the teacher's guide books which are based on national kindergarten curriculum. It was analysed that the 43 guidebooks(2009 Educational activities and materials guidebooks for kindergarten, 11 and the Nuri curriculum teacher guidebooks for the age of 3-5, 32) were analysed using the UCINET 6 program with multicultural education contents frameworks. The findings were as follows: First, multicultural contents' density is connected to life theme of the Nuri curriculum was higher than the 2009 kindergarten curriculum. And life theme with high connectivity was 'I and my family' in the 2009 kindergarten curriculum and 'animals, plants and nature'(3 years old), 'kindergarten and friends' & 'I and my family'(4-5 years old) in the Nuri curriculum. Second, the highest connection content was 'having interests in culture' & 'knowing similarities and differences' in the 2009 kindergarten curriculum, and 'having interests in culture' & 'promoting a sense of community' in the Nuri curriculum. Finally, multicultural education for young children according to the national educational curriculum transition was changed from 'identity' to 'interaction and cooperation'. It means that the Nuri curriculum is more focused on international knowledges and competencies as a world citizen. It suggests the directions for multicultural education for young children in the future.

  • This study examines the effects of reading and story sharing through fairy tales on young children's character development in their role play using natural materials. To achieve this, 40 5-year-old children at early childhood educational institutes in Daejeon were tested 16 times for 8 weeks. The results were as follows. First, their role plays using natural objects through reading and talking had a positive effect on their personality cultivation. Second, there was no experimental difference in their prudence and filial piety of basic behavioral items, but their cleanliness and patience were proven effective in the experiment. Third, all their justice, conscience and service indicating their sociality-related friendship, kindness, gentleness and morality were proven effective in the experiment, which their role plays using natural objects through reading and story sharing through fairy tales had an educational effect on improving their sociality and morality through peer interaction. This suggests that their mind to improve social virtues with an exchange of emotions, particularly, treat natural role play in a friendly way, their public promises to cherish life, and their ethical virtues to obey the rules in the process of consideration, appreciation, understanding and help through mutual communication and cooperation in forest experience activities are very effective from an educational perspective.

  • Due to the characteristic that early childhood education is a process of nurturing children's senses by a leader rather than the transfer of knowledge, even in the era of with Corona, early childhood distance education is not one-to-one non-face-to-face education, but rather through distributed materials such as early childhood education packages or media such as TV. Distance education was conducted in a self-care method. Through a review of prior research and intensive parent interviews, the researcher identified the requirements for distance education, such as the expansion and accessibility of educational contents, understanding of basic knowledge of early childhood distance education, and the need to increase children's social skills through real-time distance education. It was identified that the current distance education-related solutions are not suitable for early childhood education. Accordingly, the researcher presents the basic direction (VERI) of the early childhood distance education solution of diversity, ease, real-time communication, and integration, and provides a Web/App platform that allows children, parents, and teachers to share content and communicate in real time and in non-real time. The development of a solution was proposed. This distance education solution is expected to effectively support early childhood distance education in the era of With Corona as infants, parents, and teachers communicate and share the current situation, which is only presenting guidelines and materials.

Methods : It targeted 225 preschool children from May 6, 2010 to June 8, and analyzed by having the survey results of totally 208 people, except 17 who are noncooperative with the observation survey. As for the collected materials, it carried out frequency analysis and $x^2$-test in order to grasp subjects' general characteristics and toothbrushing practice behaviors and to examine correlation, by using SPSS 12.0 for window. Results : 1. A grasp of toothbrush was indicated 47.1% for "proper" and 52.9% for "improper." The position of holding a toothbrush was indicated to be the highest with 59.6% for "the center in grip." 2. Toothpaste amount was indicated to be 49.0% for" tip in toothbrush, "followed by 38.9% for "half in toothbrush" and 12% for "every side of toothbrush" in order. Significant difference was shown according to age($x^2$=19.125. p<.05). 3. Average toothbrushing time per once was surveyed to be $106{\pm}56$ seconds. 4. As for a toothbrushing method by region, the labial and the baccal surface were indicated to be horizontal scrub with 63% and fones method 11.5%. Significant difference was shown according to gender($x^2$=10.275. p<.05). The anterior lingual surface wasn't washed with 72.6%. Significant difference was shown according to appearance of education($x^2$=6.056. p<.05). 5. A case of requiring exchange because of being widened toothbrush was indicated to be 59.2%. The toothbrush replacement in the highest ratio was needed in kindergarten teachers. Conclusions : The actual toothbrushing practice attitude of preschool children was surveyed to be not right as a whole such as toothbrushing time, toothbrushing method, toothpaste amount, and replacement of toothbrush. Accordingly, the oral health education will need to be performed in order for a change into positive attitude and for improvement in practice level. In addition, it is considered to be likely necessary for development in substantial oral health educational program available for enhancing knowledge level of oral health care in mothers and kindergarten teachers.

  • The prevalence of developmental disabilities is increasing worldwide over time. Developmental issues in infancy or early childhood may cause learning difficulties or behavioral problem in school age, further adversely affecting adolescent quality of life, which finally lead to low socioeconomic status in family, increase in medical expenses, and other relevant issues in various ways. Early childhood has brain plasticity, which means there is a high chance of recovering from developmental issues by early detection and timely intervention. Pediatricians are placed an ideal position to meet with young children till 6 years of age, of which age range is the time applicable to early intervention. Determining child's developmental status can be made by 2 pathways such as developmental surveillance and developmental screening tests. For better results, pediatricians should update their knowledge about developmental issues, risk factors, and screening techniques through varying educational program or other relevant educating materials. This paper will update reports on the prevalence of developmental disabilities and review the recent results of the Korean developmental screening test and discuss relevant issues. Finally, it will be addressed the pediatrician's role in early detecting developmental issues and timely intervention.
