This study is focused on the development of a child human model, which is composed of skin, skeleton, joints and muscle, etc. The dimension of child outer skin is referred to anthropometric data from KRISS (Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science). The positions of joint and mass properties of body segments are calculated from ATB(Articulated Total Body) program, GEBOD. The properties of bones and muscles are obtained by the way of scaling from adult human model. To verify the developed human model, ROM simulation and sled test is conducted. Developed human model can be effectively applied to the evaluation of human injury in crash situation and development of child restraint system. The explicit finite element program $PAM-CRASH^TM$ was used to simulate six-year old child human model.
Pencils are common instruments for children to use and play with. This report describes an unusual penetrating orbitocranial injury in a 5-year-old girl who was struck in her facewith a pencil. She was holding it at a desk, and her friend pushed her back. The pencil penetrated the left lower eyelid and went deep into the right frontal lobe through the base of the skull. It was removed at the emergency room, after which brain CT was performed to detect the development of an intracranial hematoma. No complications occurred after conservative management with antibiotics and an antiepileptic drug. Pencils can be hazardous to children, and a penetrating head injury with a pencil may be managed without cranial surgery.
This study was to examine the level of cognition, emotion, and social context of young children's injury risk behavior according to age and gender. The participants were 150 children of 3 to 5 years old(boys were 75 and girls were 75). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and two-way ANOVA. The results were as follows; 1) 5 year old children knew potential injury risk better than 3 or 4 year old children. 2) Boys felt less afraid than girls on risk situation. 3) As age increased, the score of social context was higher. The score of social context of boys was higher than that of girls.
This study aimed to examine the effect of parental psychological control on adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury and verify whether this effect is mediated by depression. In the first survey of 647 middle and high school students, only those who had experiences of non-suicidal self-injury were selected (136 adolescents). For data analysis purposes, descriptive statistics for each measured variable and Pearson's correlation coefficients among research variables were calculated. In addition, Process Macro - Model 4 by Hayes (2013) was used to investigate the mediating model. Finally, the bootstrapping method was applied to confirm the significance of the mediating effect. The results of this study were as follows. First, parental psychological control and depression directly affected the frequency of non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents. Second, depression mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and non-suicidal self-injury. In conclusion, the more parents controlled their children's psychological factors, the higher the level of depression among adolescents, and as a result, the higher the frequency of non-suicidal self-injury. These findings suggest that educational intervention on parental psychological control is important to prevent and reduce non-suicidal self-injury; however, psychotherapy intervention that reduces the levels of depression should also be required.
Cervical tracheal rupture is one of the rare injuries after blunt chest trauma, and this can be explained by several mechanisms. Early diagnosis and treatment of tracheal rupture after trauma can reduce the mortality and morbidity. We report here on a surgical experienced case of complete rupture of the cervical tracheal that was due to increased intra-tracheal pressure after a compression injury to the chest of an 8 years old child. We also include a review of the literature.
The ketogenic diet (KD) has been used as an effective antiepileptic therapy for intractable childhood epilepsy. However, various adverse effects have been reported with use of the KD. We report a case of a child who developed acute tubular necrosis subsequent to therapy with KD. A 5-year-old girl had myoclonic epilepsy with developmental delay. She was under the treatment with antiepileptic drugs since the age of 3 months and on the KD during the past 18 months. Proteinuria persisted intermittently with the initiation of the KD and subsequently increased in the past 2 months. She was admitted with intermittent mild fever, vomiting, and lethargy for the past 3-4 weeks. At the time of admission, she presented with hypertriglyceridemia, heavy proteinuria, renal Fanconi syndrome, and acute kidney injury. Renal sonography showed a marked increase in the size and parenchymal echogenicity of both kidneys. A renal biopsy revealed acute tubular necrosis accompanied by early interstitial fibrosis. After the withdrawal of the KD and supportive therapy, without changing other anticonvulsants and their dosages, improvement of renal function was observed. Proteinuria had disappeared after 1 month and kidney size returned to normal after 8 months. It is hypothesized that the KD can induce and/or aggravate the renal tubulointerstitial injury in some patients who are under the treatment with anticonvulsants.
This study aimed to improve mothers' knowledge, attitude, and practice of home safety. The study subjects were 146 mothers who were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. The intervention group received a Home Safety program at a childcare center for 90 minutes once a week for 5 sessions, while the control group received no treatment. The scores of the mothers in the intervention group were significantly increased compared to those in the control group after the five-week program. The mothers' safety practice lasted for at least two weeks after the termination of this program.
Purpose: This study systematically analyzed cases in South Korea wherein nurses were prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter or injury due to professional negligence in pediatric care. Methods: We analyzed the precedents using the methodology of Hall and Wright (2008) and Austin (2010). Of the 618 cases retrieved from the Supreme Court Decisions Retrieval System in South Korea, we selected the 12 cases in which children were the victims and nurses were the defendants, using a case screening methodology. Results: The most frequent penalty was a fine, and newborns were the most frequent victims. The distribution of cases according to Austin's violation categories was: improper administration of medications (n=5), failure to monitor for and report deterioration (n=4), ineffective communication (n=4), failure to delegate responsibly (n=4), failure to know and follow facility policies and procedures (n=1), and improper use of equipment (n=1). Conclusion: To ensure the safety of children, nurses are required to teach and practice a high standard of care. Nursing education programs must improve nurses' awareness of their legal obligations. Nursing organizations and leaders should also work towards enacting effective nursing laws and ensuring that nurses are aware of their legal rights and responsibilities.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report a case showed some clinical improvement in treating child aphasia with oriental medicine. Methods : The patient had some problems in communication, intelligence and behaviors due to aphasia after brain injury caused by epilepsy. We treated the patient with herbal medicine(Yangsintangkamibang), acupuncture, verbal remediation and intelligence-learning treatment. We observed the clinical progress of aphasia and evaluated the case with PRES. Results : Oriental medical treatment alleviated patient's symptoms of aphasia and PRES was also improved. Conclusions : This study shows oriental medicine can be a meaningful treatment for child aphasia, and more studies for oriental medical treatment for child aphasia is needed.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the injury prevention behaviors of school-age children using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and sought to identify the associated factors. Methods: A sample of 199 students in Grades 3 to 6 and their parents participated in the study. Measures were used to assess injury prevention behaviors, intentions, and parental influence. The data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Results: The findings showed that a stronger intention toward injury prevention behavior, living in an urban area, and higher involvement of parent's to prevent injuries were significantly associated with higher levels of injury prevention behaviors among the children. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of intention, parental influence, and urban residence in promoting injury prevention behaviors among school-age children. The findings suggest the need for tailored interventions targeting these factors to promote prevention of injuries among children. Further research is needed to develop comprehensive strategies to prevent injuries in this population.
