  • The purpose of the current study was to determine whether preschoolers' attachment relationships with their parents and socioemotional behaviors are related to their day care experiences in infancy and at the present time. The participants consisted of 59 preschoolers and their mothers from 2-parent, white, middle-class dual earner families in Madison, Wisconsin. Preschoolers' attachment quality was measured by two representational instruments: the Separation Anxiety Test and "My Family and Friends". Mothers completed questionnaires about their family background and their children's day care history. The quality of current day care was obtained from directors' reports about regulatable features of the day care centers. Teachers completed the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire. Data was analyzed by hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the quality of preschoolers' attachment relationships with parents were significantly related to the amount of day care during infancy, the quality of current care, and children's gender. In addition, the amount of infant day care appeared to have negative relations with children's socioemotional behavior problems as evaluated by teachers.

Method: Using a nonequivalent one group pretest-posttest design, 41 day care staff(N=41) from 12 day care centers in Seoul and D-gun in Chung-Nam were assigned to experimental group. A program that is appropriate for preventing injuries and protecting the health of young children at child daycare centers was developed. Health and safety education program was provided for the intervention group for 2 weeks two times. Results: After education session, the mean score of knowledge, self confidence, practice on safety and health in child care teachers were significantly increased. There were significant differences in the degree of knowledge according to education, and in the degree of practice according to age. Methods: The data was collected from January to February 2018 from 205 child care teachers in day care centers in Seoul. Results: This model was suitable to explain the health status and health promotion behavior of child care teachers. In this study, health promotion behavior had the most direct affect on the health status of child care teachers. Health promotion behavior was directly affected by social support, self-efficacy, and depression. Job stress had an indirect affect on health promotion behavior. Conclusion: Considering the factors identified in this study that influence the health promotion behavior of child care teachers, we propose the development of interventions to improve the health status of child care teachers.

  • It is becoming common that the lack of child care due to changes in social structure and family function should be serviced at society and at the national level. Interest in child care services in child care facilities also increased. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of organizational culture on child care respect for young children's rights that is needed to improve the quality of child care services. The questionnaire was administered to 340 day care teachers working in day care facilities and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 statistical program. An analysis of the impact of organizational culture on child care among infants and toddlers showed that development culture, rational culture, collective culture, and hierarchical culture, which are sub-factors of organizational culture, have statistically significant on day -to-day respect, and child- first interests. The degree of influence was shown in the order of development culture, hierarchical culture, and rational culture. In particular, the influence of group culture is very low, which has been proven to differ depending on the type of organizational culture. These results show that the organizational culture of child care facilities affects child care respect for young children's rights. In the end, we suggested the theoretical and practical implications of this study, presented limitations and future research directions.

  • This study is to describl the child care system in Sweden and to understand how the progressive child care system has been developed. The sex categories of the child care issues were studied based on a review of the literature related to the Swedish child care, family welfare system and the socio-economic information on Sweden. Six categories were : (1) historical and socio-economic background of child care system, (2) supply of and demand for the child care service and the types of public and private child care, (3) child care program activities, (4) child care staff training system, (5) administration and financial support system for the child care, and (6) the family policy and the family support programs in Sweden. For the Korean child care system, this study on the Swedish child care implied that : (1) To provide a progressive system of the child care system in Korea will require serious discussion about concentration of the child care administration system which is currently distributed to Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Welfare. (2) The extensive family support programs such as the parental leave and flexible work conditions for women are needed for the infant care by parents at home. (3) to expand the child care services in Korea, public support should be primarily focused on the supply of the public day care centers even though the demands for the various child care services are to be met by public financial support. (4) Most of all, societal recognition that all children are the resposiblity of our society is needed to develop a progressive child care system in Korea.

  • As the fertility rate of Korea has recently decreased to the lowest level in the world, the recognition of the needs for social support for the child-care has been increased. This resulted in the announcement of National Policy of Child-Rearing Support in 2004. This study attempted to propose the activation of the family child-care for the preparation of the introduction of the National Policy of Child-Rearing Support. Using literature review and interview, the following research questions were addressed. Firstly, the actual situation of the family child-care was compared with that of the other types of child-care. Secondly, the policies of child-rearing support and the family child-care systems in other countries such as United Kingdom, Sweden and Japan were introduced. Finally, activations of the family child-care were discussed in terms of the introduction of the National Policy of Child-Rearing Support. The results of this study implies that the family child-care in Korea is different from that of other countries as well as other types of child-care in Korea. Also, it suggests that key factors of the activation of the family child-care in Korea are to identify as the small, informal and family-like child-care, to differentiate as the infant-care and non-standard time child-care from other types of child-care, and to increase the level of professionalization. In conclusion, family child-care should become an alternative for the low fertility problem.

  • This study was intended to examine child abuse experience, response to child abuse, perception of the cause of child abuse, and need for counseling to prevent and eliminate child abuse among 514 day care center teachers across the country. First, 17.9% (92) of the teachers had experience of witnessing child abuse at day care centers. After such witness, the teachers mostly "paid attention to abused children and provided them with warm treatment" when they were abused by other teachers and "took no actions" when they were abused by directors of the day care centers. The biggest reason of not taking any actions was: they "had no authority to intervene in child care of other teachers" in case of child abuse by other teachers and "were afraid of responsibilities or roles that could be placed on them after reporting" in case of child abuse by day care center directors. Second, the biggest reason of child abuse by teachers was job stress followed by excessive work and mental health of teachers. Third, necessary actions when child abuse cases were found and confirmed were suspension of involved teachers and psychological evaluation for involved children and parents. Fourth, 88.9% (457) of the teachers responded that they would use an organization specialized in child abuse if such organization was built and that the organization would help them to decide on whether to report child abuse and prevention of and intervention in child abuse. They also said that such organization should be installed in the Counseling Center in the Comprehensive Child Care Support Center. Fifth, 95.3% (490) of the teachers answered professional counselors specialized in development and counseling of infants and toddlers were needed to address child abuse at day care centers. They demanded that such counselors should be able to administer psychological evaluation for young children and assess child abuse cases. Qualification of the counselors was at least college graduates who majored in psychology and child care, three to five years of experience in the field, and appropriate certificates or licenses. Finally, the teachers said that training and professional counseling about child abuse were required to prevent and eliminate child abuse at day care centers. Implications and follow-up studies were provided and suggested based on these findings.

  • The home environments, daily activities, caregiving behaviors of mothers and teachers, infant's verbal behaviors, attachment to mothers and teachers of day care infants were compared to those of home-reared infants. 30 two-year-old home-reared infants and their mothers were observed at home by the time sampling method and 31 two-year-old day care infants and their mothers and teachers were observed at home or at the center. The HOME scale, the behavioral checking lists for caregiving behaviors and for the infants' verbal behaviors, and the Attachment Q-set were used for the home and center observations. It was found that the characteristics of early environments of day care infants were different from those of home-reared infants, but that infants' attachment to the mothers were not different.
