  • In this paper, influence of geometric configurations of multi-story bracing on shear lag behaviour of braced tube structures is investigated. The shear lag of 24-, 36- and 72-story braced tube structures are assessed considering all possible configurations of overall X and Chevron bracing types. Based on the analytical results, empirical equations, useful for the preliminary design phase, are proposed to provide the optimum number of stories that braced, in order to exert minimum shear lag on structures. Studying the interaction behaviour of a tube and different bracing types along with paying attention to the shear lag behaviour, a better explanation about the reasons behind the efficiency of a specific bracing module in decreasing the shear lag is developed. The analytical results show that there are distinct differences between the anatomy of braced tube structures with X and Chevron bracing regarding the shear lag behaviour.

  • It is very important to allocate valuable resources efficiently when reconstructing buildings after earthquake damage. This paper proposes the use of a simple seismic retrofitting system to make buildings more resilient than the stiffer systems such as the shear walls implemented in Chile after the earthquake in 2010. The proposal is based on the use of steel chevron-type braces in RC buildings as a dual system to improve the seismic performance of multistory buildings. A case study was carried out to compare the proposal with the shear wall solution for the typical seismic Chilean RC building from the structural and economic perspectives. The results show that it is more resilient than other stiffer seismic solutions, such as shear walls, reduces the demand, minimizes seismic damage, gives reliable earthquake protection and facilitates future upgrades and repairs while achieving the level of immediate occupancy without the costs of the shear walls system.

  • This paper examines the crack growth behavior of 7075-T651 aluminum alloy for small tensile overload under high-low block loading condition. The cantilever beam type specimen with a chevron notch is used in this study. The crack growth and closure are investigated by compliance method. The applied initial stress ratios are R=-0.5 R=0.0 and R=0.25 Crack length, effective stress intensity factor range, ratio of effective stress intensity factor range and crack growth rate etc, are inspected with fracture mechanics estimate.

  • An experimental study on the performance evaluation of a brazed plate heat exchanger with 10USRT of normal cooling capacity has been carried out. In the present study, a brazed plate heat exchanger was tested at a chevron angle $25^{\circ}$with refrigerant R-22. Refrigerant mass flux was ranged from 23 to 58 kg/$m^2$s in condensation, and from 22 to 53 kg/$m^2$s in evaporation. The heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are increased as the mass flux increases. The water side pressure drop is increased as the cooling water flow rate and chilled water flow rate increase, while mass flux has little effect. It is also shown that the system performance can be improved by enlarging condensation heat transfer area.

  • The present study reported of the use of special shaped blade to reduce the difference in pressure across the Wells turbine for wave energy conversion. The blade profile was composed of NACA0020 airfoils and trailing edge was notched like chevron. Experiments were performed investigating the influence of trailing edge shape on the turbine performance. Four notch depths were used to investigate the effect of depth of cut on the turbine performance. As results, by placing a notch-cut at the trailing edge of the blade, it was possible to reduce the pressure difference across the turbine without lowering the efficiency. In addition, the pressure difference substantially reduced at a constant rate with the increase of the cut ratio.

  • Recent progress in both low pretilt and high pretilt defect free C1 surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is reviewed. First, by numerical calculation to investigate the balance between surface azimuthal anchoring energy and bulk elastic energy within the confined chevron layer geometry of C1 and C2, it is possible to achieve a zigzag free C1 state by low azimuthal anchoring alignment with a low pretilt angle. The critical azimuthal anchoring coefficient for defect free C1 state is calculated. Its relationship with elastic constant, chevron angle as well as surface topography effect are also discussed. Second, using $5^{\circ}$ oblique SiO deposition alignment method a defect free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable C1 SSFLC display, which has potential for electronic paper applications has also been developed. The electrooptical properties and bistability of this device have been investigated. Various aspects of defect control are also discussed.

  • Baffles have been used in cryopumps to prevent 300 K thermal radiation from reaching freely cryopanels whose temperature must be kept steadily below certain levels(4 K, 20 K or something) depending on the gas to be pumped. There are two conflicting requirements in designing a baffle such that the transmission of particles(gas molecules) should be maximized, while that of the thermal radiation(photons) minimized. The transmission probability of gas molecules or photons through chevron type baffles, influenced by the detailed geometry of blades, the reflection mode, and the absorption property of the surface, was analyzed parametrically. The effects of geometrical discrepancy between the fabricated baffle and the designed one, resulting in unexpected deterioration in the performance of the baffle, were also investigated by taking into account the gaps(or overlaps) between the baffle blades and the asymmetry in the blade arms.

  • This study introduces a series of processes aimed at understanding the noise characteristics generated by jet engines and devising measures to mitigate them through interdisciplinary capstone design projects. During the project execution, educational methods were applied to foster 4Cs (creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking) competencies. Project objectives were set through team discussions, and individual team members were assigned primary roles to act as subgroup leaders. As a result, the project was executed as follows: combustion tests were conducted using an SR-30 turbojet engine to generate noise, and the locations and characteristics of the noise sources were identified using beamforming techniques and frequency analysis applied to a 30-microphone array. Additionally, chevron nozzles were designed and fabricated to confirm their noise reduction performance.
