To achieve accurate detection of tuberculosis (TB) areas in chest radiographs, we design a chest X-ray TB area detection algorithm. The algorithm consists of two stages: the chest X-ray TB classification network (CXTCNet) and the chest X-ray TB area detection network (CXTDNet). CXTCNet is used to judge the presence or absence of TB areas in chest X-ray images, thereby excluding the influence of other lung diseases on the detection of TB areas. It can reduce false positives in the detection network and improve the accuracy of detection results. In CXTCNet, we propose a channel attention mechanism (CAM) module and combine it with DenseNet. This module enables the network to learn more spatial and channel features information about chest X-ray images, thereby improving network performance. CXTDNet is a design based on a sparse object detection algorithm (Sparse R-CNN). A group of fixed learnable proposal boxes and learnable proposal features are using for classification and location. The predictions of the algorithm are output directly without non-maximal suppression post-processing. Furthermore, we use CLAHE to reduce image noise and improve image quality for data preprocessing. Experiments on dataset TBX11K show that the accuracy of the proposed CXTCNet is up to 99.10%, which is better than most current TB classification algorithms. Finally, our proposed chest X-ray TB detection algorithm could achieve AP of 45.35% and AP50 of 74.20%. We also establish a chest X-ray TB dataset with 304 sheets. And experiments on this dataset showed that the accuracy of the diagnosis was comparable to that of radiologists. We hope that our proposed algorithm and established dataset will advance the field of TB detection.

In this study, we propose training a support vector machine (SVM) model on top of deep networks for detecting Covid-19 from chest X-ray images. We started by gathering a real chest X-ray image dataset, including positive Covid-19, normal cases, and other lung diseases not caused by Covid-19. Instead of training deep networks from scratch, we fine-tuned recent pre-trained deep network models, such as DenseNet121, MobileNet v2, Inception v3, Xception, ResNet50, VGG16, and VGG19, to classify chest X-ray images into one of three classes (Covid-19, normal, and other lung). We propose training an SVM model on top of deep networks to perform a nonlinear combination of deep network outputs, improving classification over any single deep network. The empirical test results on the real chest X-ray image dataset show that deep network models, with an exception of ResNet50 with 82.44%, provide an accuracy of at least 92% on the test set. The proposed SVM on top of the deep network achieved the highest accuracy of 96.16%.

Timely and accurate diagnosis of lung diseases using Chest X-ray images has been gained much attention from the computer vision and medical imaging communities. Although previous studies have presented the capability of deep convolutional neural networks by achieving competitive binary classification results, their models were seemingly unreliable to effectively distinguish multiple disease groups using a large number of x-ray images. In this paper, we aim to build an advanced approach, so-called Ensemble Knowledge Distillation (EKD), to significantly boost the classification accuracies, compared to traditional KD methods by distilling knowledge from a cumbersome teacher model into an ensemble of lightweight student models with parallel branches trained with ground truth labels. Therefore, learning features at different branches of the student models could enable the network to learn diverse patterns and improve the qualify of final predictions through an ensemble learning solution. Although we observed that experiments on the well-established ChestX-ray14 dataset showed the classification improvements of traditional KD compared to the base transfer learning approach, the EKD performance would be expected to potentially enhance classification accuracy and model generalization, especially in situations of the imbalanced dataset and the interdependency of 14 weakly annotated thorax diseases.

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared COVID-19 as pandemic, many researchers have started working on developing vaccine and developing AI systems to detect COVID-19 patient using Chest X-ray images. The purpose of this work is to improve the performance of pre-trained Deep convolution neural nets (DCNNs) on Chest X-ray images dataset specially COVID-19 which is developed by collecting from different sources such as GitHub, Kaggle. To improve the performance of Deep CNNs, data augmentation is used in this study. The COVID-19 dataset collected from GitHub was containing 257 images while the other two classes normal and pneumonia were having more than 500 images each class. There were two issues whike training DCNN model on this dataset, one is unbalanced and second is the data is very less. In order to handle these both issues, we performed data augmentation such as rotation, flipping to increase and balance the dataset. After data augmentation each class contains 510 images. Results show that augmentation on Chest X-ray images helps in improving accuracy. The accuracy before and after augmentation produced by our proposed architecture is 96.8% and 98.4% respectively.

This paper introduces a method aimed at diagnosing the presence or absence of lesions by detecting anomalies in Chest X-ray images. The proposed approach is based on the PatchCore anomaly detection method, which extracts a feature vector containing location information of an image patch from normal image data and calculates the anomaly distance from the normal vector. However, applying PatchCore directly to medical image processing presents challenges due to the possibility of diseases occurring only in specific organs and the presence of image noise unrelated to lesions. In this study, we present an image alignment method that utilizes affine transformation parameter prediction to standardize already captured X-ray images into a specific composition. Additionally, we introduce a region-specific abnormality detection method that requires affine-transformed chest X-ray images. Furthermore, we propose a method to enhance application efficiency and performance through feature map hard masking. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieved a maximum AUROC (Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic) of 0.774. Compared to a previous study conducted on the same dataset, our method shows a 6.9% higher performance and improved accuracy.
This study explored the use of artificial intelligence(AI) to detect foreign bodies in chest X-ray images. Medical imaging, especially chest X-rays, plays a crucial role in diagnosing diseases such as pneumonia and lung cancer. With the increase in imaging tests, AI has become an important tool for efficient and fast diagnosis. However, images can contain foreign objects, including everyday jewelry like buttons and bra wires, which can interfere with accurate readings. In this study, we developed an AI algorithm that accurately identifies these foreign objects and processed the National Institutes of Health chest X-ray dataset based on the YOLOv8 model. The results showed high detection performance with accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score all close to 0.91. Despite the excellent performance of AI, the study solved the problem that foreign objects in the image can distort the reading results, emphasizing the innovative role of AI in radiology and its reliability based on accuracy, which is essential for clinical implementation.

Many deaths have been reported due to the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. In order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, it is necessary to quickly and accurately read images of suspected patients and take appropriate measures. To this end, this paper introduces a deep learning-based COVID-19 chest X-ray reading technique that can assist in image reading by providing medical staff whether a patient is infected. First of all, in order to learn the reading model, a sufficient dataset must be secured, but the currently provided COVID-19 open dataset does not have enough image data to ensure the accuracy of learning. Therefore, we solved the image data number imbalance problem that degrades AI learning performance by using a Stacked Generative Adversarial Network(StackGAN++). Next, the DenseNet-based classification model was trained using the augmented data set to develop the reading model. This classification model is a model for binary classification of normal chest X-ray and COVID-19 chest X-ray, and the performance of the model was evaluated using part of the actual image data as test data. Finally, the reliability of the model was secured by presenting the basis for judging the presence or absence of disease in the input image using Grad-CAM, one of the explainable artificial intelligence called XAI.
Even in recent years, treatment of first-aid patients is still often delayed due to a shortage of medical resources in marginalized areas. Research on automating the analysis of medical data to solve the problems of inaccessibility for medical services and shortage of medical personnel is ongoing. Computer vision-based medical inspection automation requires a lot of cost in data collection and labeling for training purposes. These problems stand out in the works of classifying lesion that are rare, or pathological features and pathogenesis that are difficult to clearly define visually. Anomaly detection is attracting as a method that can significantly reduce the cost of data collection by adopting an unsupervised learning strategy. In this paper, we propose methods for detecting abnormal images on chest X-RAY images as follows based on existing anomaly detection techniques. (1) Normalize the brightness range of medical images resampled as optimal resolution. (2) Some feature vectors with high representative power are selected in set of patch features extracted as intermediate-level from lesion-free images. (3) Measure the difference from the feature vectors of lesion-free data selected based on the nearest neighbor search algorithm. The proposed system can simultaneously perform anomaly classification and localization for each image. In this paper, the anomaly detection performance of the proposed system for chest X-RAY images of PA projection is measured and presented by detailed conditions. We demonstrate effect of anomaly detection for medical images by showing 0.705 classification AUROC for random subset extracted from the PadChest dataset. The proposed system can be usefully used to improve the clinical diagnosis workflow of medical institutions, and can effectively support early diagnosis in medically poor area.
In fine-tuning-based transfer learning, the size of the dataset may affect learning accuracy. When a dataset scale is small, fine-tuning-based transfer-learning methods use high computing costs, similar to a large-scale dataset. We propose a mid-level feature extractor that retrains only the mid-level convolutional layers, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced computing costs. This mid-level feature extractor is likely to provide an effective alternative in training a small-scale medical image dataset. The performance of the mid-level feature extractor is compared with the performance of low- and high-level feature extractors, as well as the fine-tuning method. First, the mid-level feature extractor takes a shorter time to converge than other methods do. Second, it shows good accuracy in validation loss evaluation. Third, it obtains an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.87 in an untrained test dataset that is very different from the training dataset. Fourth, it extracts more clear feature maps about shape and part of the chest in the X-ray than fine-tuning method.
