  • This research was conducted in order to analyze the difference in yield through the changes in growth and measuring the photosynthesis efficiency in cherry tomatoes. Seedlings of cherry tomato 'Nonari' were used as scion and non-grafted control, while 4 different grafted tomatoes 'Powerguard', 'T1', 'L1', and 'B.blocking' were used as rootstocks. Plants grafted onto 'B.blocking' produced the highest fruit yield (417.5 g plant-1), whereas non-grafted plant 'Nonari' had the lowest fruit yield, (354.2 g plant-1) at the latter period of cherry tomatoes in May. The flowering position in May, plant grafted onto 'B.blocking', showed 14-17 cm, whereas non-grafted plant 'Nonari' showed 10-14 cm. The growth strength on May 15, non-grafted plant 'Nonari', showed 8.43 mm which was the lowest value among the treatments. Grafted plants kept the growth balance until the end of the harvest that led to an increase in fruit yield, while non-grafted plant weakened the vigor earlier that led to a decrease in fruit yield. Grafted plants showed higher values of chlorophyll fluorescence variables than the values of non-grafted plant. These results indicate that grafting influenced fruit yield which was observed as maintaining growth balance for longer and an increase in photosynthesis efficiency compared to non-grafting.

  • There are many different types of cultivation in tomatoes for year-round production. One of them, semi-forcing cultivation is characterized by growing seedlings in winter season. If grafted seedlings are used in winter season that energy cost can be reduced, because they have tolerance to cold stress. This study was conducted to analyze the rootstock performance by measuring the growth, yield, and leaf-macronutrient content of cherry tomatoes grown in semi-forcing hydroponics. Three domestic rootstocks 'HSF4', '21LM', '21A701', and a control cultivar 'B-blocking' were grafted onto jujube-shaped cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) commercial cultivar 'Nonari'. The total yield per plant with grafted cherry tomato '21A701' was 3,387g, which was 11%, 22% and 24% higher than the yield with 'B-blocking', non-grafted one and 'HSF4'. The stem diameter of '21A701' was thick with 8.26mm, whereas non-grafted one was thin with 7.23mm at 160 days after transplanting. The flowering position of '21LM' was 34% and 47% higher than the flowering position of 'B-blocking' and non-grafted one at 153 days after transplanting. The NO3-N concentration in petiole sap of '21LM' was the highest with 1,746mg·L-1 and non-grafted one and 'HSF4' were the lowest with 1,252mg·L-1 and 1,245mg·L-1 at 167 days after transplanting. The results indicated that rootstock/scion combinations in cherry tomatoes can affect the plant growth, yield, and the concentration of different NO3-N in leaves at the late growth stage. Both '21A701' and '21LM' have vigorous root system, which influence the growth and yield increased.

  • One-year-old male Cocker Spaniel dog was referred for the third eyelid enlargement and inflammation in the left eye (OS). It gradually swelled for 2 weeks after the cherry eye repair by conjunctival mucosa pocket procedure at a private animal clinic. Routine ophthalmic examinations including neuro-ophthalmic examination, Schirmer tear test, intraocular pressure and corneal fluorescein staining were all normal. No lesions were found on slit lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy except for third eyelid swelling in the OS. Ultrasonography revealed cystic structure within the OS nictitating membrane. Fluid from the cyst was aspirated and there were no microorganisms or neoplastic changes. Surgical intervention was performed under general anesthesia. On the day of the surgery, there was a deep corneal ulcer in the OS, which had not existed before. Ventral palpebral surface of the third eyelid was incised horizontally to the shaft of the T-shaped hyaline cartilage. And then, a full thickness of the cystic wall was incised and marsupialized. Additionally, a direct suture was performed on the ulcerated cornea. Topical and systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs were prescribed. One month after the surgery, the third eyelid swelling and the discharge were improved. Marsupialization of the nictitating membrane cyst relieved the swelling of the third eyelid and inflammation. It could be a simple but effective surgical intervention for the cystic complication of conjunctival mucosa pocket procedure in dogs.

  • As an attempt to determine the identity of the old trees of flowering cherries planted in the yard of the Catholic Archdiocese of Daegu, we conducted comparative phylogenetic analyses between wild and cultivated Prunus yedoensis Matsum. We generated the phylogeny (MP) and haplotype network (TCS) of 25 individuals, including wild P. yedoensis, from Jeju Island, cultivated P. ${\times}$yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino' from Korea and Japan, and P. spachiana f. ascendens (Makino) Kitam. from Jeju Island and Japan based on highly informative sequences of two cpDNA regions (rpl16 gene and trnS-trnG intergenic spacer). The wild and cultivated P. yedoensis were distinguished from each other in both the phylogeny and haplotype networks, and the old flowering cherry trees in Daegu had a cpDNA haplotype identical to that of the cultivated P. ${\times}$yedoensis 'Someiyoshino'. Compared to the cultivated P. ${\times}$yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino', wild P. yedoensis appears to have greater haplotype diversity, presumably originating from the genetic diversity of P. spachiana f. ascendens that functioned as a maternal parent in the hybrid origin of wild P. yedoensis. A future detailed study requires extensive sampling of P. spachiana f. ascendens from Japan and Korea to determine their precise phylogenetic relationships relative to wild and cultivated P. yedoensis. We concluded that the old flowering cherry trees planted in the yard of the Catholic Archdiocese of Daegu are highly likely to be of cultivated origin rather than wild types from Jeju Island, as previously speculated.

  • To improve the shelf-life of cherry tomato, samples were treated with aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) at 30 ppm for 0~30 minutes and the weight loss rate as well as the changes in physico-chemical and sensory properties of treated samples were investigated. Weight change in the control and in the samples with aqueous $ClO_2$ treatment were decreased slightly, and there were no difference during the storage period. There were no differences in soluble solid content among the treatments and during the storage period. There were no differences in the firmness of samples among the treatments but the firmness of the aqueous $ClO_2$ treated samples were decreased slower than that of the control samples. No significant changes in lightness, redness and yellowness of the controls and the samples by aqueous $ClO_2$ treatment were observed during 4 weeks storage period. The sensory parameters including taste, flavor, color, texture and overall acceptance at the initial period did not differ among the treatments. The scores for taste, texture and overall acceptance of the control were decreased faster than those of the aqueous $ClO_2$ treated samples when 3 weeks reached.

  • We studied the residual patterns of two fungicides, dichlofluanid and iprodione, in cherry tomato greenhouse after applying with the recommended and double dose. Also, the degradation patterns during storage periods of up to ten days were compared between at room temperature (20$^{\circ}C$) and at cold temperature (4$^{\circ}C$). Removal rates of fungicides by washing with tap-water and detergent solution (0.1%, 0.2%) were measured. Half-lives of dichlofluanid and iprodione in greenhouse cherrytomato were 2.2$\sim$3.5 and 3.3$\sim$5.4 days, respectively. During the storage period, the residues were dissipated more slow. Removal rates were 62.8$\sim$80.3% by tap-water, 60.4$\sim$83.1% by 0.1% detergent solution, and 65.3$\sim$77.6% by 0.2% detergent solution. So, we can predict of terminal residues from cultivation period to marketing, storage and consuming.

  • Guzmania was propagated through in vitro culture of lateral shoots. When new shoots grown in greenhouse were cut and cultured in vitro, contamination rate was very high at about 80% in the first stage of in vitro culture. Among cytokinin treatments for agar medium, 2.0 mg/L BA was most effective for shoot multiplication, and those with 0.5 mg/L kinetin and 0.5~1.0 mg/L BA were favorable for shoot multiplication. BA was more effective for shoot multiplication than kinetin, and shoot multiplication was more enhanced when 2.0 mg/L BA was combined with 0.1~0.5 mg/L IAA than 2.0 mg/L BA alone. The medium with 2.0 mg/L BA and 0.1 mg/L IAA showed the highest rate of shoot multiplication with about 8.7 in shoot number, and those with 2.0 mg/L BA and 0.5~1.0 mg/L IAA also resulted in high multiplication of shoots. Shoots were multiplicated more in liquid rotation culture(80 rpm) with the medium containing 0.5 mg/L BA and 0.1 mg/L IAA than liquid stagnating and solid cultures. Regenerated shoots formed roots very favorably in the medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/L IBA.

  • In order to help the preservation of the cherry tomatoes, antimicrobial paper incorporating grapefruit seed extract and zeolite was applied to packaging fruits. The fruits were packed with a paper bag of 15.5${\times}$24 cm and then stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$. During the storage, weight loss, pH, total acidity, soluble solid content, microbial load and decay were measured as quality indices. Steady weight loss due to the transpiration was observed to slightly increase the solid content during the storage with little difference between the packaging treatments. There were little change in pH and acidity of the stored fruits. The microbial loads of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast/mold counts were significantly suppressed during 10 day storage by the antimicrobial paper packaging, which also contributed to reducing the decayed fruits observed after 15 days.

  • Current service system of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for blooming date forecasting in spring depends on regression equations derived from long term observations in both temperature and phenology at a given station. This regression based system does not allow a timely correction or update of forecasts that are highly sensitive to fluctuating weather conditions. Furthermore, the system cannot afford plant responses to climate extremes which were not observed before. Most of all, this method may not be applicable to locations other than that which the regression equations were derived from. This note suggests a way to replace the location restricted regression equations with a thermal time based phenology model to complement the KMA blooming forecast system. Necessary parameters such as reference temperature, chilling requirement and heating requirement were derived from phenology data for forsythia, azaleas and Japanese cherry at 29 KMA stations for the 1951-1980 period to optimize spring phenology prediction model for each species. Best fit models for each species were used to predict blooming dates and the results were compared with the observed dates to produce a correction grid across the whole nation. The models were driven by the KMA's daily temperature data at a 5km grid spacing and subsequently adjusted by the correction grid to produce the blooming date maps. Validation with the 1971-2012 period data showed the RMSE of 2-3 days for Japanese cherry, showing a feasibility of operational service; whereas higher RMSE values were observed with forsythia and azaleas.

  • Daily temperature data produced by harmonic analysis of monthly climate summary have been used as an input to plant phenology model. This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of the harmonic based daily temperature data in prediction of major phenological developments and to apply the results in improving decision support for agricultural production in relation to the climate change scenarios. Daily maximum and minimum temperature data for a climatological normal year (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 1971-2000) were produced by harmonic analysis of the monthly climate means for Seoul weather station. The data were used as inputs to a thermal time - based phenology model to predict dormancy, budburst, and flowering of Japanese cherry in Seoul. Daily temperature measurements at Seoul station from 1971 to 2000 were used to run the same model and the results were compared with the harmonic data case. Leaving no information on annual variation aside, the harmonic based simulation showed 25 days earlier release from endodormancy, 57 days longer period for maximum cold tolerance, delayed budburst and flowering by 14 and 13 days, respectively, compared with the simulation based on the observed data. As an alternative to the harmonic data, 30 years daily temperature data were generated by a stochastic process (SIMMETEO + WGEN) using climatic summary of Seoul station for 1971-2000. When these data were used to simulate major phenology of Japanese cherry for 30 years, deviations from the results using observed data were much less than the harmonic data case: 6 days earlier dormancy release, 10 days reduction in maximum cold tolerance period, only 3 and 2 days delay in budburst and flowering, respectively. Inter-annual variation in phenological developments was also in accordance with the observed data. If stochastically generated temperature data could be used in agroclimatic mapping and zoning, more reliable and practical aids will be available to climate change adaptation policy or decision makers.
