Petroleum refining unavoidably generates large volumes of oily wastewater. The environmentally acceptable disposal of oily wastewater is a current challenge to the petroleum industry. Nowadays, more attentions have been focused on the treatment techniques of oily wastewater. Oily wastewater contained highly concentrated and toxic organic compounds. Wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) and catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) were applied to eliminate pollutants to examine the feasibility of the WPO/CWO of oily wastewater. The results indicated that more than 80% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from oily wastewater was achieved with CWO. Homogenous catalyst, $NaHCO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ and NaOH showed effective removal for pollutants in oily wastewater. Greater than 90% COD removal was achieved with WPO. It was concluded that WPO was a far more effective process for oily wastewater.
Twenty organic chemical substances(Table 2) were isolated from untreated wastewater, as well as treated wastewater, collected at 76 companys of 9 industry group located in the basin of Youngsan River. Those organic compounds were analyzed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry(GC/MS) and confirmed through comparison with each standard reagents. Phenol, which was not detected in the raw wastewater, was identified in the effluent of treatment facility, indicating that phenol is generated from isopropylbenzene of plant wastewater.
Treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater is becoming a major goal due to water scarcity. This may be carried out using membrane separation technology in general and reverse osmosis (RO) in particular. In the current study, polyamide (FT-30) membrane was employed for treatment of wastewater obtained from Faraman industrial zone based in Kermanshah (Iran). The effects of operating conditions such as transmembrane pressure, cross flow velocity, temperature and time on water flux and rejection of impurities including COD by the membrane were elucidated. The aim was an improvement in membrane performance. The results indicate that most of the chemical substances are removed from the wastewater. In particular COD removal was increased from 64 to around 100% as temperature increased from 15 to $45^{\circ}C$. The complete COD removal was obtained at transmembrane pressure of 20 bars and cross flow velocity of 1.5 m/s. The treated wastewater may be reused for various applications including makeup water for cooling towers.
Yarn dyed wastewater has to be treated prior to disposal into the water bodies due to its high content of harmful organic compounds. In this study, the performance of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal and kinetic rate constant are investigated via hybrid electrocoagulation-Fenton in a continuous system using wastewater discharged from a yarn dyed industry in Surabaya city. The wastewater was treated in a batch mode using electrocoagulation to reduce Total Suspended Solid, followed by Fenton method in a continuous system to reduce COD level. Various Fe(II) feeding modes, molar ratio of $Fe(II)/H_2O_2$, initial pH of wastewater, and flow rate are used in this study. The results show that COD removal process obeys a pseudo-first order kinetics. At $Fe(II)/H_2O_2$ ratio of 1:10, initial wastewater pH of 3.0, and feed flow rate of 30 mL/min, the COD removal efficiency was observed to be 80%, and the kinetic rate constant is $0.07046min^{-1}$. The chemical cost for the treatment estimated to be IDR 160 per L wastewater, which is cheaper than the previously reported batch system of IDR 256/L.
In the following study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used for prediction of permeate flux decline during oily wastewater treatment by hybrid powdered activated carbon-microfiltration (PAC-MF) process using mullite and mullite-alumina ceramic membranes. Permeate flux is predicted as a function of time and PAC concentration. To optimize the networks performance, different transfer functions and different initial weights and biases have been tested. Totally, more than 850,000 different networks are tested for both membranes. The results showed that 10:6 and 9:20 neural networks work best for mullite and mullite-alumina ceramic membranes in PAC-MF process, respectively. These networks provide low mean squared error and high linearity between target and predicted data (high $R^2$ value). Finally, the results present that ANN provide best results ($R^2$ value equal to 0.99999) for prediction of permeation flux decline during oily wastewater treatment in PAC-MF process by ceramic membranes.
The combination of biological and physical/chemical technologies is a promising technique to reduce highly concentrated pollutants in livestock wastewater. It is suggested to treat livestock wastewater efficiently as follows: firstly, biodegradable organic matters, nitrogen and some of phosphorus should be removed by a biological treatment process and then residual non-biodegradable organic matters, color and phosphorus be eliminated by physicochemical technologies. In this study, therefore, the integrations of chemical coagulation, activated carbon adsorption, Fenton oxidation and ozonation were evaluated to provide appropriate post-treatment processes for biologically pre-treated livestock wastewater. After chemical coagulation followed by ozonation or Fenton oxidation process, the quality of treated wastewater could meet the discharge limit in Korea. However, a yellowish brown color still remained in the treated wastewater after a single method such as coagulation and Fenton oxidation was applied. The ozonation was found to be the most effective technology for the decolorization. Neither simple biological nor physicochemical treatment provides adequate decolorization and sufficient depletion of organics in livestock wastewater so far. Consequently, the integration of Fenton oxidation and ozonation with a biological treatment process is recommended to treat livestock wastewater in terms of removal efficiency.

Multivariate analysis and batch monitoring on a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) are described for integrated wastewater treatment management system, where a batchwise multiway independent component analysis method (MICA) are used to extract meaningful hidden information from non-Gaussian wastewater treatment data. Three-way batch data of SBR are unfolded batch-wisely, and then a non-Gaussian multivariate monitoring method is used to capture the non-Gaussian characteristics of normal batches in biological wastewater treatment plant. It is successfully applied to an 80L SBR for biological wastewater treatment, which is characterized by a variety of error sources with non-Gaussian characteristics. The batchwise multivariate monitoring results of a pilot-scale SBR for integrated wastewater treatment management system showed more powerful monitoring performance on a WWTP application than the conventional method since it can extract non-Gaussian source signals which are independent and cross-correlation of variables.
The consecutive combination process of a biological process as the pre-treatment and a chemical process as the post-treatment is applied for the dyeing wastewater. The poor efficiency of biological treatment using pure oxygen makes the chemical treatment cost high. It is necessary to improve the efficiency of biological treatment in order to reduce the cost of chemical treatment. The purpose of this paper is to find the minimum dose of chemical reagent to fit the Discharged Water Quality Standards for the different biological treatment effluents. Results revealed that the minimum dosage of Fenton's reagent lead to save the cost of chemical treatment based on the guideline dose in the treatment plant. The possible maximum saving reagents was up to $70\%$ for the effluent of the pilot plant packed with the carrier imbedded microorganisms which were selected from the present treatment plant.
Advances in industrial development and waste management over several decades have reduced many of the impacts that previously affected ecosystems, however, there are still processes which discharge hazardous materials into environments. Among industries that produce industrial wastewaters, textile manufacturing processes play a noticeable role. This study was conducted to test a novel continuous combined commercial membrane treatment using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), ultrafiltration (UF), and polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes for textile wastewater treatment. The synthetic textile wastewater used in this study contained sodium silicate, wax, and five various reactive dyes. The results indicate that the removal efficiency for physical particles (wax and resin) was 95% through the UF membrane under optimum conditions. Applying UF and NF hybrid treatment resulted in total effective removal of dye from all synthetic samples. The efficiency of sodium silicate removal was measured to be between 2.5 to 4.5% and 13 to 16% for UF and NF, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand in all samples was reduced by more than 85% after treatment by NF.
Traditionally the supernatant after chemical treatment of metal acid wastewater is discharged in environment. The supernatant can be used as a coagulant as it contains effective metals. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of treatment of dyeing wastewater using the supernatant after treatment by magnesium hydroxide and dolomite($Ca{\cdot}Mg(CO_3)_2$), of acidic metal wastewater. In dyeing wastewater treatment with the supernatant, optimum pH and dosage were determined. COD, turbidity and color were analyzed to evaluate the performance of treatment. In the case of magnesium hydroxide, the optimum dosage was 10%(v/v) for supernatant A and 3%(v/v) for supernatant B. Color, turbidity and COD removal was 99~100%, 85~97% and 43~53%, respectively. In the case of dolomite, the optimum dosage was 10%(v/v) for supernatant A and 3% for supernatant B. Color, turbidity and COD removal was 96~99%, 62~9l% and 52~53%, respectively.
