  • Ion flotation is an efficient method to remove metal ions from aqueous solution. In this work, ion flotation was applied to calcium removal from aqueous solution. The parameters used included sodium stearate (SS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as collectors, 1-butanol and 1-propanol as frothers, pH, and air-flow rate. An L16 orthogonal array was chosen according to the mentioned factors and levels, and experimental tests were conducted according to the Taguchi orthogonal array. The results showed that all of the factors except one had significant effect on the flotation performance. The percentage contribution of parameters showed that type of frother and type of collector made the greatest (43.14%) and the lowest (9.86%) contribution, respectively. In optimal conditions, the recovery of Ca (II) ion was 45.67%. Also, the results illustrated that the Taguchi method could predict calcium removal from aqueous solution by ion flotation with 2.63%. This study showed that the use of ion flotation was an effective method for Ca (II) ion removal from aqueous solution.

  • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers of different molecular weights were synthesized by a suspension polymerization and precipitation polymerization method. The rheology behaviors of the synthesized PAN copolymers were investigated in relation to their molecular weight, solid content and melting temperature. The influence of "historical effects" on the spinning solution of PAN was studied by analyzing the laws of viscosity considering the diversification time and temperature. The viscosity disciplines of each spinning solution conformed well to the rheological universal laws in a comparison of the suspension polymerization product with that of precipitation polymerization. Viscosity changes in the swelling process of dissolution were gentler in the suspension polymerization product; a small amount of water will quickly debase the solution viscosity, and high-speed mixing can greatly shorten the time required by the spinning solution to reach the final viscosity.

  • The method of foam fractionation can be applied to enrich proteins from a dilute protein solution if the proteins are hydrophobic and foam. If a protein, such as invertase, is hydrophilic, a dilute solution containing this protein may not foam. In that case, a batch foam fractionation process may not be appropriate for recovering a concentrated solution of that protein. In this paper, various concentrations of invertase were added to a dilute solution containing bromelain (a hydrophobic protein), in order to determine how the presence of a hydrophilic protein can affect the recovery of the desired hydrophobic protein. The effect of invertase on bromelain recovery was studied here at an initial bulk solution pH of 5 and an air superficial velocity of 4.6 cm/s.

  • Catalytic properties of Ni-Zr$O_2$ catalysts prepared by coprecipitation have been studied for the gas-phase hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes. The coprecipitation method led to the solid solution of Ni-Zr$O_2$, which contains highly resistant Ni species to thermal reduction with H2. Nickel species of the solid solution were highly dispersed in the ZrO2 lattice, so that the reduced catalysts were selective for hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes (99.9%) even in the presence of 1-butene.

  • Colloidal solutions of crystalline PbSe nanoparticles have been synthesized by hot solution chemical process using PbO in oleic acid and tributylphosphine (TBP) bonded selenium. The use of TBP as a capping agent along with oleic acid gives a very good yield (around 10% at 180 ${^{\circ}C}$) with an average diameter of particle of about < 6.6 nm. The effects of temperature on size and production yield of PbSe quantum dots are studied. Xray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV/VIS/NIR absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples.

  • Recently an electrochemical noise method (ENM) with three electrodes has gained attention as a corrosion monitoring system in chemical plants. So far a few studies have been carried out for localized corrosion and environmental cracking of chemical plant materials. In this paper the ENM system is briefly summarized. Then an application of ENM to general corrosion for chemical plant materials is described. The emphasis is focused upon the analysis of stress on the corrosion cracking process of austenitic stainless steel in 30% $MgCl_2$ aqueous solution and the corrosion fatigue crack initiation process of 12 Cr stainless steel in 3% NaCl aqueous solution by ENM. Finally future problems for ENM to monitor regarding corrosion and environmental cracking in chemical plants are discussed.

  • A partly implicit/quasi-explicit method is introduced for the solution of detailed chemical kinetics with stiff source terms based on the standard fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. Present method solves implicitly only the stiff reaction rate equations, whereas the others explicitly. The stiff equations are selected based on the survey of the chemical Jaconian matrix and its Eigenvalues. As an application of the present method constant pressure combustion was analyzed by a detailed mechanism of hydrogen-air combustion with NOx chemistry. The sensitivity analysis reveals that only the 4 species in NOx chemistry has strong stiffness and should be solved implicitly among the 13 species. The implicit solution of the 4 species successfully predicts the entire process with same accuracy and efficiency at half the price.

  • Total impurity analysis of a primary standard solution is one of the essential procedures to determine an accurate concentration of the standard solution by the gravimetry. Bi impurity is determined in Pb standard solutions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The direct nebulization of the Pb standard solution produces a significant amount of the Pb matrix-induced molecular ions which give rise to a serious spectral interference to the Bi determination. In order to avoid the spectral interference from the interferent $^{208}PbH^+$, the hydride generation method is employed for the matrix separation. The Bi hydride vapor is generated by reaction of the sample solution with 1% sodium borohydride solution. The vapor is then directed by argon carrier gas into the ICP after separation from the mixture solution in a liquid-gas separator made of a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane tube. The presence of 1000 ${\mu}$g/mL Pb matrix caused reduction of the bismuthine generation efficiency by about 40%. The standard addition method is used to overcome the chemical interference from the Pb matrix. Optimum conditions are investigated for the hydride-generation ICPMS. The detection limit of this method is 0.5 pg/mL for the sample solutions containing 1000 ${\mu}$g/mL Pb matrix.

  • The surface tension of the solution of dodecylpridinium bromide was measured by the ring method over the range $25^{\circ}\; to\; 45^{\circ}C.$ The critical micelle concentration was determined from the change of the surface tension of solution with concentration. The temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration was also investigated. The result was compared with Adderson and Taylor's data determined by the conductivity method.

  • An oxygen bomb combustion procedure were studied for determination of heavy metal in polymer materials such as polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene by ICP-AES. This method is proposed as a rapid and simple sample preparation for decomposition of polymer containing certified contents of the analytes by teflon coated oxygen bomb combustion using different absorbing solution. The recoveries of metal were found to be 30~102% from absorbed solution by ICP-AES method using polypropylene certified reference material(PP CRM-As, Ba, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn). The recoveries of metal using PVC CRM(Cd, Hg, Pb) was found to be 45 ~101% with same procedures.
