A fast and simple high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the simultaneous determination of four pesticides having fungicide properties has been proposed for Panax ginseng, C. A. Meyer grown for 4, 5, or 6 years. Analytical separation was performed on C18 columns using ultraviolet detector under gradient conditions. Spiked blank samples were used as standards to counteract the matrix effect observed in the chromatographic determination. The HPLC response for all pesticides was linear, with determination coefficients > 0.9986. The average rate of recovery for pesticides spiked with 2 fortification levels was > 72% with relative standard deviations < 9%. The limits of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.03 to 0.16 ppm. These LOQs were lower than the respective maximum residue limits (MRL) established by the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA), except for cyazofamid. The proposed method was used to determine pesticide residue levels in samples of ginseng obtained from Jeonnam Province (Republic of Korea). None of the pesticides were found in ginseng samples grown for 4, 5, or 6 years.

Background: Preservatives are used to prevent product deterioration in modeling clay. Parabens, a representative preservative, have been found to be endocrine disruptors and cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Isothiazolinone preservatives can be irritating to the skin, respiratory tract, and eyes. Thorough investigation and regulation of clay are necessary because clay is marketed to children, who are more sensitive to the toxic effect of chemicals. Objectives: In this study, the presence of 16 preservatives was analyzed in modeling clay and the results were compared with current standards. Methods: A total of 200 samples were collected from 28 children's clay products sold in South Korea (13 from Korea and 15 imported from overseas). Twelve preservatives, such as parabens, were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Isothiazolinone preservatives (chloromethylisothiazolinone; CMIT, methylisothiazolinone; MIT, octylisothiazolinone; OIT, and benzisothiazolinone; BIT) were analyzed using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometery (UPLC-MS/MS). Results: Dehydroacetic acid (DHA) was detected the most in the clays at 51.50% (103 cases) detection; 38 cases (median 190.42 ㎍/g) in Korean products and 65 cases (median 169.62 ㎍/g) in Chinese products. CMIT, which is prohibited in Korea, was detected in 14 (median 16.28 ㎍/g) Chinese products. OIT, which has a chemical structure similar to CMIT was found in 28 (median 68.38 ㎍/g) samples in Korean products. Conclusions: The use of CMIT and MIT in children's products is prohibited in Korea and the European Union (EU). The detection of CMIT in Chinese clay products suggests that management is necessary for imported products. It is necessary to review the safety and regulatory status for OIT because OIT was used as a substitute for CMIT and MIT in Korean products.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the phylogenetic and expression analysis of the angiopoietin-like (ANGPTL) gene family and their role in lipid metabolism in pigs. Methods: In this study, the amino acid sequence analysis, phylogenetic analysis, and chromosome adjacent gene analysis were performed to identify the ANGPTL gene family in pigs. According to the body weight data from 60 Jinhua pigs, different tissues of 6 pigs with average body weight were used to determine the expression profile of ANGPTL1-8. The ileum, subcutaneous fat, and liver of 8 pigs with distinct fatness were selected to analyze the gene expression of ANGPTL3, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL8. Results: The sequence length of ANGPTLs in pigs was between 1,186 and 1,991 bp, and the pig ANGPTL family members shared common features with human homologous genes, including the high similarity of the amino acid sequence and chromosome flanking genes. Amino acid sequence analysis showed that ANGPTL1-7 had a highly conserved domain except for ANGPTL8. Phylogenetic analysis showed that each ANGPTL homologous gene shared a common origin. Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that ANGPTL family members had different expression patterns in different tissues. ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL8 were mainly expressed in the liver, while ANGPTL4 was expressed in many other tissues, such as the intestine and subcutaneous fat. The expression levels of ANGPTL3 in the liver and ANGPTL4 in the liver, intestine and subcutaneous fat of Jinhua pigs with low propensity for adipogenesis were significantly higher than those of high propensity for adipogenesis. Conclusion: These results increase our knowledge about the biological role of the ANGPTL family in this important economic species, it will also help to better understand the role of ANGPTL3, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL8 in lipid metabolism of pigs, and provide innovative ideas for developing strategies to improve meat quality of pigs.
This study was conducted to evaluate the chemical and organoleptic properties of some dairy products supplemented with different concentrations of propolis (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%). There was no significant difference between pH values of the treated and control groups. All samples were tested using 20 evaluators divided in five categories. Compared to the control, the best organoleptic test results were obtained for market milk, yoghurt, and Kefir supplemented with 0.5% propolis. Statistical difference was observed in the taste, flavor, color, texture, and overall acceptability of market milk, yoghurt, and Kefir between the treated and control groups (p<0.05). However, as propolis has a strong aromatic flavor, it should be supplemented in small amounts, so as not to affect the organoleptic properties of the product. In conclusion, this study provides useful information for the development of functional dairy products using propolis.
Product liability(PL) law imposes the liability on manufacturer or wholesaler when the product defects cause harm to consumers of the products or any other parties in their lives, bodies, or properties. In Korea, the law of product liability was enforced in July 2002. In this study the Product Liability Response System of chemical products was developed by using Failure Mode and Effect Analysis(FMEA). For a case study peformed for N,N-Dimethylethylamine. First, product information was gathered through Material Safety Data Sheet(MSDS)and which considered as an instruction manual of chemical product. And an effect caused by product defects is analyzed by FMEA to get Risk Priority Number(RPN) which is calculated by multiplying of severity, occurrence, and detection of the defects. Then hazard was estimated quantitatively by RPN.
This study is to assess the level or consumer's attitude or food safety and their effects on the purchase or environment friendly agricultural products. For these purposes, the survey was implemented to 550 adults who resided in Seoul and metropolitan area. As a results, a lot of respondents perceived the five food hazards, pesticides, food additives, BSE, chemical materials, GMOs as the severest food risks. Results revealed that women, the most educated, married, and the older respondents were more likely to be negative about food safely. And Also, consumer's knowledge of environment friendly agricultural products was lower than the median. The respondents who have bought environment friendly agricultural products were 80.5% of the entire respondents. Also, the educated and the consumers who had the knowledge of the environment friendly agricultural products started to purchase them. The consumers who had higher income, perceived the food hazards(BSE), assessed agricultural products safety negatively, had willingness to pay them and more knowledge of environment friendly agricultural products were likely to purchase them usually.
As a rule, when develop new product in company, multiple products that have similar function are developed simultaneously. These products are subjected to a group of tests covering quality, safety and durability. If the schedule of tests is changed, the expected net presented value(NPV) of new products is changed. The tests should be scheduled with the goal of maximizing the expected NPV of the new products. A model incorporated resource constraints with the sequencing of testing tasks of multiple products is proposed in this paper. Examples show that the proposed model can handle stochastic task duration data represented by scenarios with probabilities.
A simple and sensitive analytical method was developed using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for determination of Picoxystrobin in agricultural products (apple, hulled rice, mushroom, pepper, soybean, and mandarin). Picoxystrobin residues were extracted with acetonitrile, partitioned with saline water, and then they were cleaned up on a florisil solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge to obtain an extract suitable for analysis by GC-ECD and GC-MS. The method was validated using 6 agricultural product samples spiked with Picoxystrobin at different concentration levels (0.02, 0.05 and 0.5 mg/L). Average recoveries of Picoxystrobin (using each concentration three replicates) ranged 64.0~98.3% with relative standard deviations less than 10%, calibration solutions concentration in the range 0.1~5 mg/L, and limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.005 and 0.02 mg/L, respectively. The result showed that the developed analytical method is suitable for Picoxystrobin determination in agricultural products.
BACKGROUND: Increase of heavy metals in agricultural ecosystem has become a social issue nationwide as it is related to public health. This review was performed to find out more systematic and integrated future researches on heavy metals using up to date articles published in the Korean journals related to agricultural environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Researches on heavy metals in agricultural soils and plant uptake were categorized by the establishment of criteria, analytical methods, monitoring, management of source, characteristics and behavior in soil, plant uptake, bioavailability affecting physico -chemical properties in soil, risk assessment and soil remediation. In the early 1990s, the monitoring for heavy metals in soil has been widely performed. Accumulation of heavy metals in contaminated soil and availability to plants has also attracted interests to study the soil remediation using various physico-chemical methods. The phytoavailability and phytotoxicity of heavy metals have been mainly studied to assess the safety of agro-products using risk assessment techniques in the 2000s. CONCLUSION: Future direction of research on heavy metal in agricultural environment must be carried out by ensuring food safety and sustainability. A steady survey and proper management for polluted regions should be continued. Law and regulation must be modified systematically. Furthermore, studies should expand on mitigation of heavy metal uptake by crops and remediation of polluted fields.
