Methyl ester derived from coconut oil is very interesting to study since it contains free-fatty acid with chemical structure of medium carbon chain ($C_{12}-C_{14}$), so the methyl ester obtained from its part can be a biodiesel and another partially into biokerosene. The use of heterogeneous catalysts in the production of methyl ester requires severe conditions (high pressure and high temperature), while at low temperature and atmospheric conditions, yield of methyl ester is relatively very low. By using microwave irradiation trans-esterification reaction with heterogeneous catalysts, it is expected to be much faster and can give higher yields. Therefore, we studied the production of methyl ester from coconut oil using CaO catalyst assisted by microwave. Our aim was to find a kinetic model of methyl ester production through a transesterification process from coconut oil assisted by microwave using heterogeneous CaO catalyst. The experimental apparatus consisted of a batch reactor placed in a microwave oven equipped with a condenser, stirrer and temperature controllers. Batch process was conducted at atmospheric pressure with a variation of CaO catalyst concentration (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0, 2.5%) and microwave power (100, 264 and 400 W). In general, the production process of methyl esters by heterogeneous catalyst will obtain three layers, wherein the first layer is the product of methyl ester, the second layer is glycerol and the third layer is the catalyst. The experimental results show that the yield of methyl ester increases along with the increase of microwave power, catalyst concentration and reaction time. Kinetic model of methyl ester production can be represented by the following equation: $-r_{TG}=1.7{\cdot}10^6{_e}{\frac{-43.86}{RT}}C_{TG}$.
Furfural is a platform chemical that is produced from xylose, one of the hemicellulose components of lignocellulosic biomass. Furfural can be used as an important feedstock for phenolic compounds or biofuels. In this study, we compared and optimized the conditions for producing furfural from xylose in a batch system using two types of catalysts: sulfuric acid, which is commonly used in the furfural production process, and formic acid, which is an environmentally friendly catalyst. We investigated the effects of xylose initial concentration (10 g/L~100 g/L), reaction temperature (140~200 ℃), sulfuric acid catalyst (1~3 wt%), formic acid catalyst (5~10 wt%), and reaction time on the furfural yield. The optimal conditions according to the type of catalyst were as follows. For sulfuric acid catalyst, 3 wt% of catalyst concentration, 50 g/L of xylose initial concentration, 180 ℃ of temperature, and 10min of reaction time resulted in a maximum furfural yield of 59.0%. For formic acid catalyst, 5 wt% of catalyst concentration, 50 g/L of xylose initial concentration, 180 ℃ of temperature, and 150 min of reaction time resulted in a furfural yield of 65.3%.
The effect of Group I alkali acetate promoters on vinyl acetate (VA) synthesis was evaluated. Catalyst product selectivity and ethylene conversion are compared to the unpromoted catalyst in the fixed-bed reactor with oxidation reaction of ethylene and acetic acid in gaseous phase over Pd-Au/$SiO_2$ catalyst. It was found that: a) the promoters were stabilized on the catalyst surface, b) common effect for the alkali promoted Pd-Au catalysts increaseed in product selectivity and ethylene conversion compared to unpromoted catalyst (these effects increase from top to the bottom of Group I). These promoting effect is due to the common-ion effect of acetate, present in the reaction, resulting in an increase in the activity of the catalyst. In addition a complementary theory for the effect of Au in the structure of the catalyst is proposed the imposition of distribution of palladium particles through decreasing the particle's diameter.
The kinetics of ester interchange reaction of dimethyl naphthalate(DMN) with ethylene glycol(EG) has been studied in the range of 180-200 $^{\circ}C$ using zinc and manganese catalysts. The reaction was performed in a semibatch reactor under nonisothermal condition and the degree of reaction was calculated from experimental data of methanol removal rate and reaction temperature. As a reaction model, both the functional group model and the molecular species model were applied and analysed. In case of zinc catalyst, the ratio of reaction rate of methyl hydroxyethyl naphthalate(MHEN) with EG on that of DMN with EG is about 1.4, whereas in case of manganese catalyst the ratio is about 4.3, which implies that the reaction rate is quite dependent on the type of catalyst. In case of zinc catalyst, the reaction order of catalyst concentration on either DMN or MHEN and EG is less than 1, whereas in case of manganese catalyst, the reaction order is larger than 1. The activation energy for zinc and manganese catalyst, irrespective of the type of molecular species, e.g., DMN and MHEN, were found to be 25000 and 28750 cal/mol, respectively. As a result of comparing two reaction model, the molecular species model fits well for the experimental data.
In this investigation, nano ZnO was sonochemically synthesized by a novel method using a methionine precursor. A narrow size distribution (41-50 nm) of nano ZnO was achieved that was immobilized on perlite and applied as a catalyst in catalytic ozonation. The catalyst was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, BET surface area, and field emission scanning electron microscope. The ozonation of recalcitrant Remazol black 5 (RB5) di-azo dye solution by means of the synthesized catalyst was investigated in a bubble column slurry reactor. The influence of pH values (7, 9, 11), catalyst dosage (8, 12, 15, $20g\;L^{-1}$) and reaction time (10, 20, 30, 60 min) was investigated. Although the dye color was completely removed by single ozonation at a higher reaction time, the applied nanocatalyst improved the dye declorination kinetics. Also, the degradation of the hazardous aromatic fraction of the dye was enhanced five-times by catalytic ozonation at a low reaction time (10 min) and a neutral pH. The second-order kinetics was best fitted in terms of both RB5 color and its aromatic fraction removal. The total organic carbon analysis indicated a significant improvement in the mineralization of RB5 by catalytic ozonation using the nano-ZnO/perlite catalyst.
Reverse-Water-Gas-Shift reaction (RWGSR) was carried out over the ZnO, $Al_2O_3,\;and\;ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalysts at the temperature range from 400 to 700 ℃. The ZnO showed good specific reaction activity but this catalyst was deactivated. All the catalysts except the $ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst (850 ℃) showed low stability for the RWGSR and was deactivated at the reaction temperature of 600 ℃. The $ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst calcined at 850 ℃ was stable during 210 hrs under the reaction conditions of 600 ℃ and 150,000 GHSV, showing CO selectivity of 100% even at the pressure of 5 atm. The high stability of the $ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst (850 ℃) was attributed to the prevention of ZnO reduction by the formation of $ZnAl_2O_4$ spinel structure. The spinel structure of $ZnAl_2O_4$ phase in the $ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst calcined at 850 ℃ was confirmed by XRD and electron diffraction.
A systematic study of Knoevenagel reaction and Nazarov cyclization was made on variety of less reactive carbonyl compounds such as ${\beta}$-ketoesters, 1,3-diketones and cyclic active methylene compounds using $Yb(OTf)_3$ as the catalyst. Recycling study confirms reusability of the catalyst without much loss of activity.
In this study, activity changes of $Ni/Ce-ZrO_2$ catalyst for steam reforming reaction in the various steam treatment condition were investigated and BET, XRD and XPS analysis were introduced to characterize the catalyst before and after treatment. Activity test showed that $Ni/Ce-ZrO_2$ catalyst had good activity after reduction in steam reforming reaction but deactivated rapidly after steam treatment at high temperature. Activities of deactivated catalyst by steam was recovered to die previous activity level after reduction using hydrogen rich gas. It was observed that catalytic activity was preserved after repeated steam treatment, too. It showed that change of catalytic activity due to steam treatment is perfectly reversible. From the BET, XRD and XPS analysis, deactivation of $Ni/Ce-ZrO_2$ catalyst was due to the transition from Ni, that is activity site for steam reforming reaction, to $NiAl_2O_4$ in steam treatment at high temperature.

The transesterification reaction between diethanolamine and methyl-methacrylate was kinetically investigated in the presence of various metal acetate catalysts at $120^{\circ}C$. The quantity of methylmethacrylate reacted in the reaction flask was measured by gas chromatography and liquid chromatography, and the reaction rate was investigated by measuring of the quantity of products and reactnts under various catalysts. The transesterification reaction was carried out in the first order reaction kinetics with respect to the concentration of diethanolamine and methylmethacrylate, respectively. The apparent rate constant was found to obey first-order kinetics with respect to the concentration of catalyst. The linear relationship was shown between apparent rate constant and reciprocal absolute temperature, and by the Arrhenius plot, the activation energy has been calculated as 11.08 Kcal with zinc acetate catalyst, 17.99 Kcal without catalyst. The maximum reaction rate was appeared at the range of 1.4 to 1.6 of electronegativity of metal ions and instability constant of metal acetates.

A new polymeric catalyst was prepared by supporting $GaCl_3$ on cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone ($GaCl_3$/PVP). This catalyst was employed for efficient and regioselective ring-opening reaction of epoxides by various alcohols under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. In our procedure, this heterogeneous catalyst was used at neutral and mild reaction conditions to afford high yields of ${\beta}$-alkoxy alcohols. Also, regioselective conversion of epoxides to ${\beta}$-azidohydrines was accomplished by sodium azide in MeOH in the presence of $GaCl_3$/PVP at room temperature. $GaCl_3$/PVP is a non-hygroscopic and recoverable catalyst and is easily separated from reaction mixture by a simple filtration and re-used repeatedly. Also, this catalyst has good handling and can be stored for long time without any reducing of its reactivity.
