Electrostatic Properties of N-Acetyl-Cysteine-Coated Gold Surfaces Interacting with TiO2 Surfaces

  • It is found that that the coating N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) on gold surfaces may be used to design the distribution of either gold particle adsorbed to the $TiO_2$ surface or vice versa by adjusting the electrostatic interactions. In this study, we investigated electrostatic properties of the NAC-coated-gold surface and the $TiO_2$ surface. The surface forces between the surfaces were measured as a function of the salt concentration and pH value using the AFM. By applying the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory to the surface forces, the surface potential and charge density of the surfaces were quantitatively acquired for each salt concentration and each pH value. The surface potential and charge density dependence on the salt concentration was explained with the law of mass action, and the pH dependence was with the ionizable groups on the surface.

  • The study in river basin has been performed for the identify water quality impaired stream segments, to create a priority ranking of those segments, and to calculate the heavy metal ion distribution for each impaired segment based on chemical and physical water quality standards. Two methods for modeling the potential area-specific heavy metal distribution are pursued in this study. First, a novel approach focuses on distance. Heavy metal distribution can be associated with a particular small geographic area. Based on the derived estimates an distribution map can be generated. Second, the approach is used the near watershed by means of kriging interpolation algorithm. These approaches provide an alternative distribution mapping of the area. The exposure estimates from both of these modeling methods are then compared with other environmental monitoring data. A GIS-based model will be used to mimic the hierarchical stream structure and processes found in natural watershed. Specifically, the relationship between landscape variables and reach scale habitat conditions most influential found in the Abandoned mine will be explored.

In-Situ Synthesis of PS/(-)Silica Composite Particles in Dispersion Polymerization Using An ($\pm$) Amphoteric Initiator

  • Core/shell ($\pm$)PS/(-)silica nanocomposite particles were synthesized by dispersion polymerization using an amphoteric initiator, 2,2'-azobis [N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2,2-methylpropionamidine] ($HOOC(CH_2)_2HN$(HN=) $C(CH_3)_2CN$=NC $(CH_3)_2C$(=NH)NH $(CH_2)_2COOH$), VA-057. Negatively charged (-6.9 mV) silica was used as the stabilizer. The effects of silica addition time and silica and initiator concentrations were investigated in terms of polymerization kinetics, ultimate particle morphology, and size/size distribution. Uniform hybrid microspheres with a well-defined, core-shell structure were obtained at the following conditions: silica content = 10-15 wt% to styrene, VA-057 content=above 2 wt% to styrene and silica addition time=0 min after initiation. The delay in silica addition time retarded the polymerization kinetics and broadened the particle size distribution. The rate of polymerization was strongly affected by the silica content: it increased up to 15 wt% silica but then decreased with further increase in silica content. However, the particle size was only marginally influenced by the silica content. The zeta potential of the composite particles slightly decreased with increasing silica content. With increasing VA-057 concentration, the PS microspheres were entirely coated with silica sol above 1.0 wt% initiator.

전산유체역학을 이용한 PEMFC의 성능에 대한 3차원 유로 구조의 영향 (Effects of 3D Flow-Channel Configurations on the Performance of PEMFC using Computational Fluid Dynamics)

  • 본 연구에서는 3차원 전산유체역학 모델을 적용하여 서펜타인 유로를 갖는 고분자 전해질 분리막(PEM) 연료전지의 성능평가를 수행하였다. PEM 연료전지의 전산 모델은 등온조건하에서의 이동현상을 고려하여, 물질 및 운동량 전달, 전극에서의 반응속도론 그리고 전기적 흐름을 모두 포함하였다. 한편, 병류로 흐르도록 형성된 구조의 유로 형태는 본 연료전지모델에서 유로의 폭과 높이의 비인 종횡비와 유로와 립 폭의 비인 반응면적비를 변화시키며 다양한 형상으로 고려되었다. 유로의 형상이 변화될 경우 연료전지 내부의 수소와 산소의 질량분율 분포가 계산되었으며, 이에 따라, 활성화과전압의 계산 값이 변하게 되며 전류밀도 분포가 최종적으로 결정되었다. CFD 결과는 종횡비가 클수록 성능이 증가하고 반응면적비가 클수록 성능이 감소하는 것을 보였다. 본 연구의 모델에 의하면 서펜타인 유로의 형상에 의해, 성능특성이 경향성을 보이는 결과를 보여주었으며, 이와같은 결과는 다른 문헌에 보고 된 CFD 결과들과 전반적으로 잘 부합하는 것으로 나타났다.

Comparison of L5178Y tk+/- Mouse Lymphoma Assay and In vitro Chromosome Aberration Test

  • The mouse lymphoma assay (MLA) has been recently validated as a sensitive and specific test system to determine the genotoxic potential for a chemical. The objective of this study is to evaluate the utility of MLA for detecting mutagens. Especially, to compare MLA with the in vitro chromosomal aberration test (CA), we performed MLA using the microwell method with three chemicals (hydroxyurea, theophylline and amino acid copper complex), which were reportedly positive in the CA. In cell treated with hydroxyurea, anti-neoplastic agent that blocks DNA replication, evidence of a positive response was obtained without S9 mix for 4 h and 24 h. In addition, analysis of colony size distribution at concentration that gave an elevated mutant fraction showed that hydroxyurea induced a high proportion of small type colonies, indicating that hydroxyurea-induced mutation is associated with large chromosomal deletion. Conversely, negative MLA result was obtained for theophylline, which was wed as central nervous system stimulator. Although theophylline increased the mutant frequency at concentration of 1250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ with S9 mix for 4 h, a concentration-related increase in mutant frequency was not observed. The MLA result of amino acid copper complex was considered equivocal because the positive result was obtained at concentration showing 10% or less RS or RTG. Thus, among 3 CA-positive chemicals, positive MLA result was obtained for one. The other two chemicals were negative and equivocal. However MLA, which evaluates mutagenic potential of chemicals through colony formation by cell grouth, may provide a higher predictivity of carcinogenesis than CA.

  • Some physico-chemical properties such as surface area, moisture content, cation exchange capacity, swelling rate, pH, viscosity and liquid limit have been determined for evaluation of Cabentonite deposit occurring in four localities; Yonil, Gampo, Haseo and Pohang, in Gyeongsang-do. Montmorillonite contents can be derived from surface area measurement. Enhancement of liquid limit values and swelling volume were observed in the samples which had higher exchangeable Na ion and finer particle-size distribution. Identical results were observed even in the Na-exchanged samples. This suggests that aggregation effects have a great influence on physico-chemical properties. Aggregation of montmorillonite were controlled not only burial depth but also composition of exchangeable cation. Consequently, sample occurred in Yonil area where has the greatest burial depth in the area show somewhat lower physico-chemical properties than those of samples occurred in the other localities. However, the basic test applied in this study provides very useful preliminary information relating to its commercial potential.

밀도변화에 따른 CO기체 분자으I YHB 동경분포함수에 대한 연구 (A Density Dependent Study on YHB RDF of Gaseous CO Molecule)

  • Stockmayer 분자 모델을 도입하여 선형분자인 CO분자를 쌍극자 분자로 단순화하여 CO 기체의 YHB 동경분포함수 (radial distribution function)를 컴퓨터로 계산하였다. 얻어진 CO 분자의 YHB 동경분포함수의 신뢰도는 여러 온도에서의 밀도 변화에 따른 CO 기체의 압력을 계산하여 조사하였다. 계산된 압력들은 문헌에 알려진 CO기체의 압력과 잘 일치하였으며 계산에 사용된 온도는 273, 298, 373 K, 그리고 조사한 밀도의 범위는 최대 약 $0.013/{\AA}^3$ (최대 압력 = 1000 atm)까지이다. 계산된 압력들이 문헌에 나타난 실험치와 잘 일치하는 것으로 나타났으므로 구해진 YHB 동정분포함수는 CO 분자의 압력과 같은 밀도변화에 민감한 각종 물리 화학적 평형 양들을 신뢰성있게 계산 및 예측할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 또한 이 연구에서 CO 기체의 dipole-dipole 상호작용은 약 2.5 분자직경까지 효과적으로 작용하는 것으로 나타났다.

Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized by Using Marine Isolate Streptomyces albidoflavus

  • Silver nanoparticles production by the green chemistry approach was investigated using an isolated marine actinomycetes strain. The isolated strain was identified as Streptomyces albidoflavus based on chemotaxonomic and ribotyping properties. The strain revealed production of silver nanoparticles both extracellular and intracellularly. Surface Plasmon Resonance analysis with the function of time revealed that particle synthesis by this strain is reaction time dependent. The produced particles were spherical shaped and monodispersive in nature and showed a single surface plasmon resonance peak at 410 nm. Size distribution histograms indicated production of 10-40-nm-size nanoparticles with a mean size of 14.5 nm. FT-IR spectra of nanopartilces showed N-H, C-H, and C-N stretching vibrations, denoting the presence of amino acid/peptide compounds on the surface of silver nanoparticles produced by S. albidoflavus. Synthesized nanoparticles revealed a mean negative zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility of -8.5 mV and -0.000066 $cm^2/Vs$, respectively. The nanoparticles produced were proteinaceous compounds as capping agents with -8.5 mV zeta potential and revealed antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and -positive bacterial strains. Owing to their small size, these particles have greater impact on industrial application spectra.

고농도 침탄강의 탄화물 형성과 피팅 피로강도에 미치는 탄소 포텐셜의 영향 (Effect of Carbon Potential on the Carbide Formation and Pitting Fatigue Strength of Supercarburized Steel)

  • In the present work, we investigated the effects of the carbon potential on the formation of carbide at the carburized surface and anti-pitting fatigue strength in the supercarburized steels. Two low carbon steels with different Cr concentrations were adopted and the repeated supercarburizing treatment carried out with the different carbon potential conditions. The microstructure and carbides at the supercarburized surface were observed by using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The microhardness test was performed and the hardness distribution and the effective case depth at the supercarburized surface were discussed. The roller pitting fatigue test was carried out and the fatigue strength was evaluated with different the carbon potential conditions. The microstructure of the fatigue specimen surface was observed by means of scanning electron microscope and scanning transmission electron microscope. Depending on the chemical composition of the steels and the carbon potential condition, the resistance of temper softening and pitting failure was influenced due to the carbide distribution and the formation of coarse network carbide. Thus, it was confirmed that the control of the carbide formation is a key factor to improve the anti-pitting fatigue strength in the supercarburized steels.

한국 서남해안 습지의 식물 군집에 미치는 토양요인 (Soil Factors Affecting the Plant Communities of Wetland on Southwestern coast of Korea)

  • To describe the major environmental factors operating in coastal wetland and to characterize the distribution of the plant species over the wetland in relation to the major environmental gradients, 12 soil physical and chemical properties were determined. The gradient of water and osmotic potential of soil, electrical conductivity, sodium and chloride content and soil texture alsong the three habitat types of salt marshes, salt swamp and sand dune were occurred. The 24 coastal plant communities from principal component analysis (PCA) on the 12 variables were at designated as a gradient for soil texture and water potential related with salinity by Axis I and as a gradient for soil moisture and total nitrogen gradient by Axis II On Axis I were divided into 3 groups (1) 9 salt marsh communities including Salicornia herbacea communities (2) 5 salt swamp communities including Scirpus fluviatilis communities and (3) 10 sand dune communities including Jmperata cylindrica communities on Axis II were divided into 2 groups (1) salt marsh and sand dune communities, and (2) 3 salt swamp communities. The results could account for the zonation of plant communities on coastal wetland observed alsong envionmental gradients.
