  • This study investigates the change of chemical components, antioxidant and antimutagenic activity in Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer stems and leaves (GU) by the various processing methods, as follows: fresh (GU-1), dried under the shade (GU-2), blanched (GU-3), roasted 3 times (GU-4), roasted 4 times (GU-5). The components have been identified and quantified through the use of gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). At results, cis-1,3-dimethyl-2-methylenecyclohexaneat at 19.7 min and n-hexadecanoic acid at 21.5 min were detected in five kinds of extract. 3-O-Methyl-D-fructose at 17.8 min was observed in four extracts except in GU-1 and aminopyrazine at 19.8min was observed in four extracts except in GU-4. The total phenolics contents was high in GU-4(3.38 g/100 g). ABTS radical scavenging was high in GU-5($EC_{50}$, 0.57 ug) and DPPH radical scavenging was high in GU-4($EC_{50}$, 2.66 ug). The extracts of GU-3, GU-4, and GU-2 were most potent in anti-mutagenicity activity against 1-NP, Trip-P-1, and Trip-P-2, respectively. GU-3 and GU-4 also showed most potent effect of anti-mutagenicity on 2-AA and AFB1, respectively.

  • This study investigated the effect of bamboo leaf powder, added at content of 0%, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%, on the quality and sensory characteristics of rice cake imprinted with flower pattern (Ed-there is no respecitive comparison here) The chemical composition as a whole was 3.07${\pm}$0.12% of moisture, 5.87${\pm}$0.02% of crude protein, 2.52${\pm}$0.05% of crude fat, 23.70${\pm}$0.07% of crude fiber and 7.73${\pm}$0.02% of crude ash. With increasing amount of added bamboo leaf powder, the hardness and chewiness of the cake were significantly increased(p<0.05), while the cohesiveness, springiness and adhesiveness were decreased. In chromaticity, the L-value, the indicator of brightness, was significantly decreased with increasing bamboo leaf powder content. The a-value, the indicator of redness, was significantly lower than the chlorophyll color (p<0.05). The b-value, the indicator of yellowness, was increased indirect proportion to the content. In sensory test, the sensory characteristics such as color, flavor, taste and chewiness were all stronger with increasing powder content, whereas the softness and dampness were weaker. The greatest overall satisfaction was achieved by the sample group of cake with 6% preference added powder.

  • This study was carried out to understand the effect on soil chemical property, ion contents, and growth of Lonicera japonica by treatment of simulated acid rain and wood vinegar. It was treated total 30 times by one time per 2 weeks during 150 days from June to October dividing to various pH level of simulated acid rain (each pH 5.6, 4.5, 3.5 and 2.5) and the control site (pH 6.3). The wood vinegar diluted with 500 times was also treated total 10 times by one time per 2 weeks at the experimental sites. The soil pH was reduced as pH level of simulated acid rain was decreased. The organic content, total nitrogen, and Av. $P_2O_5$ in soil showed a tendency to increment. However, the soil improvement effect was exposed to be insufficient when a wood vinegar was treated. In the component of the plant body, $SO_4{^2}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ increased due to the simulated acid rain treatment and the increment ratio was reduced in the wood vinegar treatment plot. In addition, the cation contents showed a tendency to variation due to pH of simulated acid rain. And it showed more increment in the leaves than the root. The early fallen leaves and growth inhibition of L. japonica showed up after the simulated acid rain treatment but the growth of L. japonica increased after the wood vinegar treatment.

  • Popillia quqdriguttata is a serious insect pest in Korean golf courses. The adult feeds on leaves of latifoliate trees and herbaceous plants while the larva feeds on roots of turfgrass. Thus, control of p. quadriguttata adults was tried with registered insecticides in golf courses in Korea. The insecticides used in the experiments were carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, chlorpyrifos-methyl EC, deltamethrin EC, etofenprox WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, etofenprox + tebufenozide EC, fenitrothion EC, imidacloprid SC, pyraclofos WP, and tralomethrin EC. Mortalities of P. quadriguttata were over 95% in carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, and fenitrothion EC at petri dish and in greenhouse. In the field test, corrected mortality of P. quadriguttata was 95.2% and 80.9% in carbaryl 40% +phosalone 20% WP and fenitrothion 50% EC, respectively. Spreading agent enhanced toxic effect of used insecticides to p. quadriguttata adults except carbaryl + phosalon 20% EC. p. quadriguttata adult was firstly observed to feed on leaves of Canna generalis at the Yongwon golf club in Jinhae, Gyeongnam and Prunus ameriaca var. ansu and p. salicina at the Anyang Honest golf club in Gunpo, Cyeonggi. Therefure, host plants off quadriguftata became 29 species of 26 genera in 19 families. Zoysia matreila at the fairway and roughs of Anyang Benest golf club was damaged by p. quadriguttata larvae in Octomber, 2002 and not recovered in April, 2003. Damaged turfgrass became yellowish and wilted and that retarded recovering in the following spring.

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been emerging worldwide as one of the most important hospital and community pathogens. At the same time, because of the difficulty in developing chemical synthetic drugs and because of their side-effects, scientists are making more efforts to search for new drugs from plant resources to combat clinical multidrug-resistant microbial infections. Cinnamomum camphora (C. camphora) is a plant of family Lauraceae, and grown Jeju island in South Korea that are used as a drug to treat neurasthenia, epilepsy, cystitis, pyelonephritis, digitalis, cancer, and diabetes mellitus in folk remedies. In this study, antibacterial activites of 80% ethanol extract of C. camphora leaves (CCE) were investigated in combination with antibiotics against clinical isolates of MRSA. The results showed that CCE was determined with MIC and MBC values ranging from 156 to 313 and 313 to $625{\mu}g/ml$, oxacillin from 128 to 256 and 128 to $512{\mu}g/ml$, ampicillin from 4 to 64 and 8 to $128{\mu}g/ml$. The combination of CCE with oxacillin or/and ampicillin were synergistic effect against MRSA 1, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15/ MRSA 1, 2, 6, and 7.

  • This experiment investigated the characteristics of salted and fresh Chinese cabbages of different cultivars and using various cultivation methods. We measured the numbers of leaves, sizes, thicknesses, moisture contents, and firmness qualities of fresh Chinese cabbage grown in a plastic house, and outdoors. 'The bulb sizes, leaf thicknesses, and moisture contents of leaves were higher after plastic house cultivation than after growth in the field. Plastic house culture increased the growth rate of Chinese cabbage. Firmness and osmolarity showed better values after outdoor cultivation, however. The growth rates and the levels of chemical components were affected by interactions between cultivation methods and cultivars of Chinese cabbage. The salt levels of salted Chinese cabbage were 1.21.7% (w/w) after cabbages cultivated outdoors were preserved, and 0.91.2 % (w/w) after vegetables grown in a plastic house were treated. The quality properties of postharvest Chinese cabbages after salting varied with cultivation method even when the same cultivars of Chinese cabbage were used. The salt contents of salted Chinese cabbage thus varied with different cultivation methods. The results indicate that the properties of Chinese cabbage vary with the culture systems adapted.

  • The wormwood is one of the plants which occur widely throughout the world. Though the precise data on the entire chemical composition of mugwort leaves are not available, the major principles which have been found so far include inulin, alkaloid, thujon, sesquiterpene and several vitamins. Santonin, a parasiticide, is one of the glucosides extracted from the limited species of wormwood. It has long been known in herb medicine that the plants of this family has not only strong hemostatic, analgesic and parasiticidal actions but also therapeutic effects for diarrhea, stomachache and asthma. In recent pharmaceutical botany the wormwood is introduced to have antipyretic and astringent actions also. The mugwort(Artemisia asiatica Nakai) is the most common species of wormwood that occurs in Korea. The usage of this edible leaves of mugwort is rather various. It is used not only for wormwood bath but also as forage, moxa and medicinal agents. Recently Kim et al reported from their study on the effect of mugwort on the motility of isolated intestine of rabbits that tonus and motility were markedly enhanced by mugwort but this effect of mugwort on intestinal motility was almost completely blocked by atropine suggesting that activity of mugwort was exerted through its cholinergic effect. It was the findings of Kim et al that prompted the authors to do the present experiment. The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of mugwort(Artemisia asiatica Nakai) juice on the respiration and blood pressure in cats. And also studied was the mechanism of depressor action of Artemisia asiatica Nakai Juice (AAJ). The results obtained are as follows; 1) It was observed that mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate were decreased markedly by AAJ. Following administration of 0.15 ml/kg and 0.3 ml/kg AAJ into cats the maximum depressor responses observed were $77.5{\pm}2.2\;mmHg$ and $94.0{\pm}3.7\;mmHg$ respectively. 2) Depressor responses to AAJ were blocked markedly by atropine whereas the responses were not affected by propranolol and dibenamine. Therefore it is strongly inferred that depressor action of AAJ results mainly from its cholinergic effect. This inference was further substantiated by the fact that heart rate change which invariably accompanies depressor responses to AAJ was almost completely abolished by atropinization. 3) After administration of AAJ into cats frequency of respiration was markedly increased while depth of respiration decreased during first 2-3 seconds.

  • Many farmers have been seeking alternatives to chemical fertilizer for successful organic fruit production. This experiment was carried out to investigate the replaceability of chemical fertilizer by cover crop and slurry composting biofiltration (SCB) liquid manure (LM) application in pear orchard. Three treatments were contained in this experiment; cover crop only and cover crop + LM treatment, and control (chemical fertilizer application). Dry weight and mineral contents of gramineous cover crops were significantly increased in LM-combined treatments than that of leguminous species. Bulk density of soil was decreased in rye + LM and hairy vetch + LM treatments, compared with each cover crop treatment. Soil pH was lowest in fertilizer treatment and soil nitrate content became similar between treatments after rainy season. Available soil phosphate was lower in cover crop and cover crop + LM treatmemts than control, but exchangeable Mg was higher. The mineral content and net assimilation rate of leaves showed no difference between the treatments. As a result, it is suggested that the application of SCB liquid manure in pear orchard managed by cover crops is desirable to maintain the productivity by improving soil physical properties and potential nutrient recovery.

  • Caliroa carinata (Zombori) has heavily damaged the forests of Quercus mongolica in Sangju, Kyongbuk, Korea since 1996. However, information on the ecology and control of this pest was badly scarce. Thus we tried to study the ecology and chemical control of the sawfly through this study. Caliroa carinata is one generation per year. The adult sawflies emerged from June 8 to July 5 with peak at June 18. A female adult laid 11 eggs in rows on the backside of a leaf along the midribs and larger veins. Larvae have six instars, and the developmental period required to complete the larval stage was 19 days and 17 days at temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Each larval stage required 2-4 days to complete the development. The sawfly mostly preferred Quercus mongolica and Q. dentata, while avoiding Q. variabilis. Such insecticides as Tebufenozide, Flufenoxuron, Etofenprox, and Fenitrothion were sprayed on host plant leaves infected with test larvae in order to study the mortality. After 3 days of insecticide treatments, the mortalities were thoroughly examined. All insecticides showed higher than 95% of mortalities. Control values were also higher than 93%. The optimal season of insecticide application for pest control was estimated from late June to early July.

  • This study was carried out to know the effects of two kinds of peper mill sludge manure compost(SMC-1 and SMC-2) on the growth and chemical comments of carrot(Daucus carota L.) : SMC-1 contained 18% of swine manure and 8 % of sawdust on a fresh weight basis and SMC-2 contained swine manure without sawdust a third of the total weight of the manure and S-0(control) was treated with chemical fertilizer only, S-1 and S-2 was with SMC-1 and SMC-2 respectively, in addition to the chemical fertilizer. Carrot treated with S-1 and S-2 showed the increasing tendency of fresh weight per root and fresh yield of carrot per unit area than control(S-0), and the contents of nitrogen(N), phosporus(P), potassium(K) and calcium(Ca) in carrot grown on SMC treatments were higher than those on control(S-0), The S-2 treatment tended to increase values of the fresh weight of live leaves, root diameter, fresh weight per root and fresh yield of carrot per unit area than S-1 treatment. The contents in carrot were higher in the order of K>Ca, N. P>Mg, and the contents of aluminium, zinc, copper and chromium were below the level of toxicity for plant growth, and the contents of cadmium and lead were negligible. From the results obtained, it can be said that SMC application showed favorable effects on the growth of carrot when compared to control(S-0), and with the SMC treatments SMC-2 aplication was favorable.
