Methanol extracts from 53 species of oriental medicinal plants in 34 families were tested for their fungicidal activities against Pyricularia grisea, Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora capsici, Phytophthora infestans, Collectotrichum dematium, Botryospaeria dothidea, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, Botrytis cinerea, Puccinia recondita, and Erysiphe graminis. In in vitro study using impregnated paper disc method, the efficacy varied with both plant pathogen and plant species tested. Methanol extracts of Asarum sieboldii roots, Sinomenium acutum roots, Pinus densiflora leaves, Rheum undulatum root barks, Coptis japonica roots, and Phellodendron amurense barks showed potent fungicidal activities against the various pathogens when treated with 10 mg/disc. In a whole plant test, methanol extracts of P. densiflora leaves and roots and C. japonica roots were highly effective against a variety of plant pathogens. As a naturally occurring fungicide, P. densiflora- and C. japonica-derived materials could be useful as new fungicidal products against various plant diseases induced by plant pathogenic fungi.
This study investigated the chemical composition of headspace gas from white-flowered lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner). Volatile flavor compositions of headspace from white-flowered lotus (floral leaf, stamen, flower stalk, stem) were investigated through the solid-phase microextraction method using polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene fiber. The headspace was directly transferred to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sixty-three volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus floral leaves, and undecanoic acid (7.81%) was the most abundant component. Fifty-three volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus stamina, and isobutylidene phthalide (7.94%) was the most abundant component. Forty-four volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus flower stalks, and 3-butyl dihydrophthalide (11.23%) was the most abundant component. Fifty-nine volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus stems, and ligustilide (16.15%) was the most abundant component. The content of phthalides was higher in the headspace of flower stalks and stems, while alcohols and acids were the predominant compounds in lotus floral leaves.
The MeOH extracts obtained from the leaves of Eucommia ulmoides were solvent-fractionated with EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_20$, successively. From the EtOAc extract showing Grab2-Shc inhibitory activity, a flavonol and a lignan compounds were isolated through repeated silica gel column chromatographies. By interpretation of several spectral data and adaptation of acetylation method, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as 5,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxy-flavonol (quercetin), and 4,4',8',9-tetrahydroxy-3,3'-dimethoxy-7,9'-cyclolignan {(-)-olivil)}, respectively. The compounds exhibited $IC_{50}$ values in Grb2-Shc inhibitory activity to be 93 and $210\;{\mu}mole/l$, respectively.
The moisture contents of threshed leaf tobacco during aging storage were very important factor for the improvement or deterioration of leaf quality. Decay and carbonization of leaf tobacco were mainly controlled by moisture contents during storage. The influence of moisture contents on the decay and carbonization of threshed leaf tobacco (Flue-Cured, Var. NC 82. AB3O-1 grade) were examined during 1 year. The moisture contents of leaf tobacco were treated to 3 kg as 12% (controle), 16%, 20% and 24% after redrying, respectively, These tobacco were put into center of carton box containing about 200kg with 12%'s tobacco, and then packed and stored from June, 1988 under natural weather condition in warehouse at Ock-Cheon threshing plant. Samples were taken from dissected carton box at 0, 1, 2, 4, 7 and 12 months after moisture treatment and Racking time, and some chemical properties were investigated at every sampling time. In results of inducement to decay and carbonization of leaf tobaccos during 1 year's storage by moisture treatment. decayed leaf was appeared but carbonized leaf did not. Calorification and decayed leaf occurred at high moisture contents above 20%, and these phenomena were appeared between 30 and 150 days after moisture treatment and packing. High moisture content leaves (above 20%) caused nearby other leaves to be sunk with high moisture content. Nicotine and calcium contents were increased to 20%~30% and 10%~22%, respectively, but total sugar contents was decreased to 40%~60% by moisture treatment(20% ~24% ).

Annona reticulata belonging to the family Annonaceae is traditionally used as anthelmintic and it is reported to have anticancer activity. Free radicals are known to be involved in various types of diseases like cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders etc. The present study was aimed to evaluate free radical scavenging property of methanol extract of the leaves of Annona reticulata in some in vitro models e.g. DPPH, nitric oxide, superoxide and lipid peroxide radical model. The extract showed good dose-dependent free radical scavenging property in all the models. $IC_{50}$ values were found to be 3.22, 170.01, 25.12 and $140.12\;{\mu}g/ml$ respectively in DPPH, nitric oxide, superoxide and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. Reductive ability of the extract was also tested based on potassium ferricyanide reduction where dose dependant reducing capability was observed. Measurement of total phenolic compounds by Folin-Ciocalteu's phenol reagent indicated that 1mg of the extract contained $146.20\;{\mu}g$ equivalent of pyrocatechol. The findings ascertain promising free radical scavenging property of the extract and the antioxidant property of the extract may be due to the high content of phenolic compounds.

Activity-guided separation of the methylene chloride-soluble fraction of the leaves of Zanthoxylum schinifolium, resulted in the isolation of four coumarinoids (1 - 4), two triterpenoids (5, 6) and three fatty acid derivatives (7 - 9) as active principles. Their chemical structures were identified as collinin (1), 8-methoxyanisocoumarin (2), 7-(6'R-hydroxy-3',7'-dimethylocta-2',7'-dienyloxy)-coumarin (3), (E)-4-methly-6-(coumarin-7'-yloxy) hex-4-enal (4), lupeol (5), epi-lupeol (6), phytol (7), hexadec-3-enoic acid (8) and palmitic acid (9), on the basis of spectroscopic (1D, 2D and MS) data analyses and comparing with the data published in the literatures. Compounds 1 and 7 showed potent cytotoxicity against Jurkat T cells with $IC_{50}$ values of 45.58 and $47.51{\mu}M$, respectively. The others showed moderate activity with $IC_{50}$ values ranging around 80.58 to $85.83{\mu}M$, while the positive control, auraptene, possessed an $IC_{50}$ value of $55.36{\mu}M$.
In the present study, we investigated the antioxidant activity of methanol extract and its organic fractions (n-hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$) of Capsiccum annuum leaves against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. As results, methanol extract, and its ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions showed good scavenging effect at 100 ${\mu}g/ml$. Four compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction through silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. Their chemical structures were elucidated as apigenin (1), vanillic acid (2), uracil (3) and apigenin $7-O-{\beta}-D-apiofuranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (4) by comparison of spectral data with those in reference. $IC_{50}$ value of compound 2 was 14.7 ${\mu}g/ml$, while compounds 1, 3 and 4 had no effect on the DPPH radical.
The chemical composition of the volatile constituents from the leaves, stems, and roots of Acanthopanax senticosus growing wild in Mt. Hexane extract of Porteresia coarctata (Roxb.) exhibits a toxic effect on the tissues of Spodoptera litura (F) while fed at the dose of 1000 and 2000 ppm thoroughly mixing with castor leaves (Ricinus communis L) after dissolving in DMSO at late fourth instar whereas only DMSO treated castor leaves were fed to control group. The larvae were put to rear at $28^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, $76{\pm}4%$ R.H. under 12 L + 12 D photoperiodic regime. In test group insects substantial reduction of protein and DNA content was marked in fat body and midgut tissues compared to DMSO treated control group. The significant biochemical alterations in the midgut tissues and fat body of test group insects indicate the insecticidal property of the said plant extract that could be tested in facilitating the phenomenal stride in Integrated Pest Management.

1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) have been extensively investigated for their α-glucosidase inhibitor on postprandial hyperglycemia, and applied in nutraceuticals and medicine for preventing or delaying progression of type 2 diabetes. However, the amount of DNJ in mulberry leaves is low (about 0.1%), therefore, more effective extraction method is needed. This study was performed to develop microbial DNJ for biological methods of DNJ as an alternative to the chemical methods. In this study, we obtained evidence for Bacillus subtilis that produce DNJ in large quantities by high performance liquid chromatography. Inhibition of α-glucosidase activity was determined to DNJ production or non-production. Investigation of the effect of mulberry leaves powder concentration (1~5%), using the DNJ high-production bacteria, provided evidence for microbial mass production of DNJ. When the 4% mulberry leaf powder for 9 days was used, the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity was over the 85%. Also, the results presented in this study confirm DNJ yield's increasement in microbes using the various of nutrients and provide insight of ways to improve DNJ yields in microorganisms.
