  • At-cut quarts crystal has been applied as chemical vapour sensors. The responses of quartz crystal at 9 MHz coated with various lipids were determined for organic gases which showed different affinities for each lipid. The identification of odorants depending on the species of lipid used for coating is discussed in terms of the normalized resonant frequency shift pattern.

  • Recently, as the number of safety accidents caused by reagents increases, researches on a system that can reduce safety accidents are underway. Existing systems managed reagent cabinet through various sensors. On the other hand, there are disadvantages in that countermeasures against simultaneous danger situations are insufficient at multi-reagents cabinet. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a system to manage the reagents cabinet through danger priority. Danger priorities are selected through domestic chemical accident cases and the Chemical Safety Management Act. If a danger situation occurs in the reagent cabinet, make sure it is from a single or multiple reagent cabinets. For multiple reagent cabinets, compare the reagent cabinet priorities and run the device sequentially from the reagent cabinet with the highest priority. Thus, by operating the device according to the danger priority, the chain reaction can be prevented in advance and the reagent cabinet can be safely managed.

  • We investigated the responses of six types of lipid-coated AT-cut quartz crystal resonators to chemical vapour sensors. The responses of quartz crystal at 9 MHz coated with phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylinositol(PI), phosphatidylethanolamine(PE), phosphatidylserine(PS), and lipid A(LA) were obtained for amyl acetate, acetoin, menthane and other organic gases which showed different affinities for each lipid. The identification of odorants depending on the species of lipid used for coating is discussed in terms of the normalized resonant frequency shift pattern.

  • The use of a chemical sensor array can help discriminate between chemicals when comparing one sample with another. The ability to classify pattern characteristics from relatively small pieces of information has led to growing interest in methods of sensor recognition. A variety of pattern recognition algorithms, including the adaptive radial basis function network (RBFN), may be applicable to gas and/ or odor classification. In this paper, we provide a broad review of approaches for various types of gas and/or odor identification techniques based on RBFN and drift compensation techniques caused by sensor poisoning and aging.

  • Some chromophores that can undergo a pronouncend colour change when acted upon an extenal agency, such as light, heat, pH, or chemical agents, have many potential applicationa as functional dyes. They may be used as indicators, optical sensors, biochemical probes, optical and thermal recording materials. The results will investigate donor-acceptor chromophores which have the potential for such colour change processes. In particular, cross-conjugated donor-acceptor chormophores, analogous to indigo and squarylium-type chromophores, will be examined for pH sensitizing and for their oxidation-reduction colour change behaviour.

  • During the last half decade, chemically modified graphene (CMG) has been studied in the wide range of applications, such as polymer composites, energy-related materials, sensors, 'paper'-like materials, field-effect transistors (FET), inks, actuators, and biomedical applications due to its excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Chemical modification of graphene oxide, which is generated from graphite oxide, which is produced by simple oxidation of graphite, has been a promising route to achieve mass production of CMG platelets via their colloidal suspensions. Graphene oxide contains a range of reactive oxygen functional groups, which renders it a good candidate for use in the aforementioned applications (among others) through chemical functionalizations. In this presentation, I will discuss my recent research activities on the fundamental chemistry of graphite oxide, as well as novel applications based on CMGs. Topics will include the chemical structure of CMGs and colloidal suspensions of CMG platelets, as well as a wide variety of applications.

  • The electrical properties of various metal phthalocyanine(MPc) thin film sensors were tested in the presence of $NO_x$ gas. Among the Phthalocyanine(Pc) thin films, lead phthalocyanine(PbPc) thin film showed the best results nd its sensitivity was over 80% at 5ppm of $NO_x$ gas. Optimal operating conditions including response time and cyclic treatment of $NO_x$ were tested and discussed.

  • This paper describes the development of an automated, hand-held sensor for the fast assessment of seafood freshness. The sensor developed here combined: an array-based chemical sensor, composed of incrementally different conducting polymer elements deposited on a small chip; a highly sensitive, custom-made electronics for the detection of very small signal changes; precise temperature control of the sensor chamber; and an on-board microcontroller for data collection, storage, automation, and analysis. The instrument was used to successfully test seafood samples with different degree of freshness and spoilage. A linear relationship between microbiological count and e-Nose signal for three different fish fillet was developed. Once the linear relationship is included into the hand-held unit software, the e-Nose signal can be used for assessment of seafood freshness without performing the microbiological count technique.

  • A new high-temperature pH sensor has been successfully developed by reforming the internal reference systems of the pH sensors based on oxygen-ion conducting ceramic membrane. The conventional internal reference system, a mixture of Ni and NiO, has been replaced with partially oxidized Ni powders, where Ni and NiO coexist on the surface of particles, in order to avoid the cumbersome mixing step of Ni and NiO particles. The partially oxidized Ni particles were made by oxidizing Ni under air atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy. The viability of the pH sensor developed was assessed in boric acid (1000 ppm-B)/ lithium hydroxide (1 to 3 ppm-Li) buffer solutions at $280^{\circ}C$. The pH sensor showed excellent accuracy with a small error less than ${\pm}0.2$ pH units.

  • Self-assembled systems with polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers combined with gold nanoparticles have been widely studied because of their potential applications in molecular electronics, catalyst carriers, chemical sensors, and biomedical devices. In our work, gold nanoparticle monolayers and multilayers with pure and ferrocene-tethered PAMAM dendrimers as cross-linking molecules were deposited on a mixed self-assembled monolayer of gold substrates. The various generations of PAMAM dendrimers can be covalently attached to mercaptoundecanoic acid mixed with a mercaptoundecanol self-assembled monolayer. Cyclic voltammograms show that redox peak currents on the alternate multilayers of gold nanoparticles and ferrocene-tethered PAMAM dendrimers increase as the number of layers increases. Fourier transform IR external reflection spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy support the results from electrochemical measurements.
