The Mg-enriched magnesium aluminum silicate (MAS) glass is known for its higher mechanical strength and chemical resistance. Among such glasses, cordierite ($Mg_2Al_4Si_5O_{18}$) is well known to have a low thermal expansion and low melting point. Polycrystalline engineering ceramics such as alumina can be strengthened by a surface modification with low thermal expansion materials. The present study involves the synthesis of cordierite by a sol-gel process and investigates the effect of glass penetration on the surface of alumina. The cordierite powders were prepared from $Al(OC_3H_7)_3$, $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$ and tetraethyl orthosilicate by hydrolysis and condensation reaction. The cordierite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD, Rigaku), scanning electron microscope (SEM, JEOL: JSM-5610), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS, JEOL: JSM-5610), and universal testing machine (UTM, INSTRON). The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the synthesized particles were ${\mu}$-cordierite calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The shape of synthesized cordierite was changed from ${\mu}$-cordierite to ${\alpha}$-cordierite with increasing calcination temperature. Synthesized cordierite was used for surface modification of alumina. Cordierite powders penetrated deeply into the alumina sample along grain boundaries with increasing temperature. The results of surface modification tests showed that the strength of the prepared alumina sample increased after surface modification. The strength of a surface modified with synthesized cordierite increased the most, to about 134.6MPa.
In this research commercial polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was modified using $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (P-25 Degussa) and further irradiated using UV light to overcome the hydrophobicity and fouling nature of the membrane. Further the membranes were characterized using SEM and FTIR. Contact angle measurements study confirmed the hydrophilic tendency of the modified membrane by decreasing the contact angle from $73^{\circ}$ to $20.28^{\circ}$. The modified membranes showed higher flux and better anti-fouling properties as compared to the unmodified counterparts. The optimum conditions were found to be 0.5 wt% $TiO_2$ loading with 60 min membrane immersion and 10 min UV light illumination. The effect of different pH conditions of feed was analysed. Real wastewater filtration experiments also indicated better performance of modified membranes as opposed to neat PES membranes.

Among the many studies of carbon-based nanomaterials, carbon-based dots (CDs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their large surface area, intrinsic low-toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, high solubility, and low-cost with environmentally friendly routes, as well as their ability for modification with other nanomaterials. CDs have several applications in biosensing, photocatalysis, bioimaging, and nanomedicine. In addition, the fascinating electrochemical properties of CDs, including high active surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, electrocatalytic activity, high porosity, and adsorption capability, make them potential candidates for electrochemical sensing materials. This paper reviews the recent developments and synthesis of CDs and their composites for the proposed electrochemical sensing platforms. The electrochemical principles and future perspective and challenges of electrochemical biosensors are also discussed based on CDs-nanocomposites.
Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an important inorganic-organic hybrid material with a three-dimensional structure. Polyurethane (PU) is a widely applied polymer that has versatile properties with the change of two phase structure. When POSS is incorporated into PU by physical or chemical methods, many properties can be greatly improved, such as mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradation resistance, and water resistance. This paper reviews the recent progress in preparation, structure, and performance of POSS-modified polyurethane from the viewpoint of physical blending and chemical modification.
Metabolic engineering has become a new paradigm for the more efficient production of desired bioproducts. Metabolic engineering can be defined as directed modification of cellular metabolism and properties through the introduction, deletion, and modification of metabolic pathways by using recombinant DNA and other molecular biological tools. During the last decade, metabolic flux analysis(MFA) has become an essential tool fur metabolic engineering. By MFA, the intracellular metabolic fluxes can be quantified by the measurement of extracellular metabolite concentrations in combination with the stoichiometry of intracellular reactions and mass balances. The usefulness and functionality of MFA are demonstrated by applying to metabolic pathways in E. coli. First, a large-scale in silico E. coli model is constructed, and then the effects of carbon sources on intracellular flux distributions and succinic acid production were investigated on the basis of the uptake and secretion rates of the relevant metabolites. The results indicated that succinic acid yields increased in order of gluconate, glucose and sorbitol. Acetic acid and lactic acid were produced as major products rather than when gluconate and glucose were used carbon sources. The results indicated that among three carbon sources available, the most reduced substrate is sorbitol which yields efficient succinic acid production.
Using metallic Ti powder as raw materials and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DACH) as the trial template, two novel reduced titanophosphate open-structures were hydrothermally isolated by varying the $H_3PO_4/H_2O$ ratio to adjust the pH value. TiPO-1 crystallizes in orthorhombic Pbca space group with cell parameters a = 21.956(3) $\AA$, b = 8.6268(11) $\AA$, c = 7.2883(9) $\AA$, V = 1380.5(3) $\AA^3$, Z = 4. TiPO-2 crystallizes in triclinic space group P$\bar{1}$ with parameters a = 5.1620(10) $\AA$, b = 8.815(2) $\AA$, c = 10.655(3) $\AA$, $\alpha$ = $99.45^{\circ}$, $\beta$ = $102.94^{\circ}$, $\gamma$ = $91.06^{\circ}$, V = 465.34 $\AA^3$. TiPO-1 is constructed by infinite -Ti-O-Ti-O- linkage that is capped by $PO_4$ groups to form a chain structure with protonated DACH molecules occupying the interchain spaces. TiPO-2 represents a rare 3-D reduced titanophosphate with 12-MR channels. The structure of TiPO-2 is a neutral framework with water molecules located in the channels.
