  • Mechanism of rapid mixing effect on chemical phosphorus removal is evaluated in this study. Assuming that chemical phosphorus removal is unaffected by mixing time, only rapid mixing intensity is evaluated. In order to find out the mechanism, it is hypothesized that rapid mixing affects the Al hydrolysis speciation, and that formation of more monomeric species ($Al^a$) results in better removal of phosphorus. According to a ferron assay, more $Al^a$ formed at higher mixing intensity than at lower intensity. Subsequent experiments revealed that better phosphorus removal was obtained at higher intensity than at lower intensity, in terms of the molar ratio of $Al_{added}/P_{removed}$. The proposed hypothesis was proved in this study. Chemical phosphorus removal is affected by rapid mixing intensity due to its effect on the Al hydrolysis speciation.

  • The effects of the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive on the electrochemical performance of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode were investigated. Coin-type EDLC cells with an organic electrolyte were fabricated using the electrode samples with different ball-milling times for the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive. The ball-milling time had a strong influence on the electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode. The homogeneous mixing of the active material and the conductive additive by ball-milling was very important to obtain an efficient EDLC electrode. However, an EDLC electrode with an excessive ball-milling time displayed low electrical conductivity due to the characteristic change of a conductive additive, leading to poor electrochemical performance. The mixing of an active material and a conductive additive played a crucial role in determining the electrochemical performance of EDLC electrode. The optimal ball-milling time contributed to a homogeneous mixing of an active material and a conductive additive, leading to good electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode.

  • The characteristic floc growth of Al-based coagulants was investigated in the aspect of mixing intensity and visualization of generated flocs during coagulation and flocculation processes. Zeta potential of turbid particles in the artificial water nearly approached to zero at pH 8-9, in which TDS and conductivity were minimized. The removal rate of turbidity and phosphate was maximized at the optimal mixing intensity of rapid and slow mixing stages. After the rapid mixing stage of coagulation process, small particles ($3-5{\mu}m$) were abruptly generated, and higher mixing intensity made more numbers of flocs. With the progress of slow mixing stage, the number of small particles were decreased with the simultaneous increase of intermediate particles ($7-21{\mu}m$). The number of large particles (>$23{\mu}m$) were maximized at the lowest rapid mixing intensity of $95.1sec^{-1}$, whereas small particles (<$5{\mu}m$) were maximized at the highest rapid mixing intensity of $760.7sec^{-1}$.

  • Compatibility of unsaturated polyester (UP) and low profile agent (LPA) of polystyrene (PS) have been investigated under various mixing conditions such as the ratio of UP and LPA, mixing time, mixing temperature, and input amount of 2nd UP. It was possible to obtain mixture with small particle size and low phase separation in condition of 35 g of LPA, 25 g of 1st UP input, 5 min of mixing time, 1700 rpm of mixing speed, and 45 g of 2nd UP input. It was found that compatibility of UP and LPA was very sensitive to mixing conditions. In addition, molded sample using sheet molding compound prepared by stable mixing condition appeared good properties such as low water adsorption, low shrinkage, and high gloss.

  • The experimental design and response surface methodologies haven been applied to the investigation of the chemical coagulation of livestock wastewater. The chemical coagulation reactions were mathematically described as a function of parameters raping mixing (rpm) of chemical coagulation ($X_1$), slow mixing (rpm) of chemical coagulation ($X_2$), $FeCl_3 $ concentration (mg/L) ($X_3$) and pH ($X_4$) being modeled by use of the central composite design. Empirical models were developed to describe relationship between the experimental variables and response. Statistical analysis indicates that three factors ($X_1$: raping mixing (rpm), $X_2$: slow mixing (rpm), $X_3$: $FeCl_3 $ concentration (mg/L) on the linear term (main effect), slow mixing (rpm) (${X_2}^2$) on the non-linear term (quadratic), and two factors ($X_1-X_3$, $X_2-X_3$) on the non-linear term (cross-product) had significant effects, respectively. The estimated ridge of maximum responses and optimal conditions for CODcr using canonical analysis was 87.44% ($X_1$: 229 rpm, $X_2$: 51 rpm, $X_3$: 877 mg/L, $X_4$: 4.3). To confirm this optimum condition, three additional experiments were performed and the mean CODcr removal (%) and concentration (mg/L) with a standard deviation of $87{\pm}1.2%$ ($576{\pm}34ppm$) were obtained.

  • 1,3-Diphenylguanidine (DPG) is commonly used as a secondary accelerator which not only acts as booster of cure but also activating silanization reaction. The aim of this study is to increase the interaction between silica and rubber by using DPG. In this study, mixing was proceeded in two steps. The T-1 compound is mixed DPG with silica and silane coupling agent in the kneader at high temperature which is named as $1^{st}$ mixing step. T-3 compound is mixed DPG with curatives in the two-roll mill at low temperature which is named as $2^{nd}$ mixing step. The T-2 compound is mixed a half of DPG in $1^{st}$ mixing step and the remainder is mixed in $2^{nd}$ mixing step. Total DPG content was equal for all compounds. When DPG is mixed with silica, silane coupling agent during the $1^{st}$ mixing step, a decrease in cure rate and an increase in scorch time can be seen. This indicates that DPG is adsorbed on the surface of silica. during rubber processing. However, bound rubber content is increased and dynamic properties are improved. These results are due to the highly accelerated silanization reaction. However, there are no significant difference in 100%, 300% modulus.

  • To establish low-cost and high efficiency water treatment process, feasibility of applying ultrasonic spray nozzle for chemical injection was evaluated. Ultrasonic spray nozzle was manufactured using piezoelectric ceramics. Treatment efficiencies of contaminants by ultrasonic spray nozzle were compared with conventional chemical mixing such as back-mixing. It was found out that the rate of chemical diffusion rate by ultrasonic spray nozzle was faster than by back-mixing method. Removal efficiencies of various contaminants, such as turbidity, organics and microorganism by ultrasonic spray nozzle were also higher than by back-mixing method. By adapting ultrasonic spray nozzle in coagulant injection process, it can be prevented that the decline of treatment efficiency by coagulant overdose. The amount of coagulant can be reduced by applying ultrasonic spray nozzle in water treatment. Along with these advantages chemical mixing chamber is not required if ultrasonic spray nozzle is adapted. From these results, it can be concluded that chemical injection by ultrasonic spray nozzle is an economical and highly efficient device for coagulant mixing.

  • A new method of evaluating the mixing time in the continuous flow stirred tank is herein proposed. Experimental results to test the concept are also presented. The mixing time is defined as the time interval between the injection of a slug of an electrolyte solution into the tank and the moment at which an essentially straight line begins on a plot of the conductivity of effluent versus time. The proposed method of measuring the mixing time is valid even for the low mixing time (5 seconds) and the results obtained agree well with previous work, where the mixing time measurements were carried out by the injection of a dye into the feed stream.

  • In T-mixer crystallization, supersaturation is generated by mixing of another solvent or non-solvent in order to reduce the solubility of the compound. Also, T-mixer is a type of continuous crystallization. In order to induce micro-mixing, two solutions were mixed rapidly by T-mixer, which formed high supersaturation. As the results, mean size of HMX crystals decreased with increasing de-supersaturation rate $(R_s)$. Eventually, HMX particles ranging from 0.5 to $5{\mu}m$ can be obtained by T-mixer crystallization. Mixing efficiency in T-mixer increased with increasing $R_s$ values. In T-mixer crystallization without surfactants, homogeneous nucleation was formed when S and $R_s$ was over 54 and $1.6{\times}10^3/sec$. In T-mixer crystallization with surfactants, homogeneous nucleation was formed when S and $R_s$ was over 26 and 7.4/sec.
