  • In this study, we implemented landslide distribution of Jeju Island using ANN and GIS, respectively. To do this, we first get the counter line from 1:2,5000 digital map and use this counter line to make the DEM. for the evaluate the land slide susceptibility. Next, we abstracted slop map and aspect map from the DEM and get the land use map using ISODATA classification method from Landsat 7 images. In the computation processes of landslide analysis, we make the class to the soil map, tree diameter map, Isohyet map, geological map and so on. Finally, we applied the ANN method to the landslide one and calculated its weighted values. GIS results can be calculated by using Acrview program and produced Jeju landslide susceptibility map by usign Weighted Overlay method. Based on our results, we found the relatively weak points of landslide ware concentrated to the top of Halla mountains.

  • Surface current fields in the eastern East China Sea (ECS) were constructed by analyzing trajectories of 58 satellite-tracked surface drifters released during 1991-1996. Composite trajectories and 20-minute-by-20-minute box-averaged current vectors show that the basic current pattern composes of: the Kuroshio main stream, which turns eastward toward the Tokara Strait; a northward branch current of the Kuroshio on the ECS outer shelf deeper than 100 m; and an anticyclonic circulation in the northern Okinawa Trough west of Kyushu. The northward branch current sharply changes its direction to the northeast when it crosses a line connecting Cheju Island, Korea and Goto Islands, Japan. The basic pattern of current field changes slightly from winter to summer, and the main axis of the Tsushima Current in the Korea Strait is found to shift seasonally. The drifter experiment does not support the claim that the Yellow Sea Warm Current is separated from the northward branch current on the outer shelf southeast of Cheju Island. We suggest that the use of the term 'Tsushima Current' be limited to the northeast channel flow in the Korea Strait. The new term 'Kuroshio Branch Current' is suggested for the northward branch current on the outer shelf south of Cheju-do, which is separated from the Kuroshio.

  • Twenty-one speices of the terrestrial isopods are recorded from Cheju Island and Chja Island, Korea. Quepartoniscus tuberculatus, n. gen., n.sp., is described. The genus Koshiniscus Nunomura is considered to be a junior synonym of Armadilloniscus Uljanin, Armadilloniscus hoshikawai Nunomura and A. amakusaensis Nunomura of A. ellipticus, Mongloiscus nipponicus (Arcangeli) of M. vannamei(Arcangeli), Nagurus tsushimaensis Nunomura, N. pallidus Nunomura, and Mongoloniscus nigrogranulatus Kwon and Tatiti of M. koreanus (Verhoeff). Nagurus sinuosus Nunomura is transferred to Lucasioides Kwon , Protracheoniscus pannuosus Nunomura (of which P.awaensis Nunomura, Nagurus gotoensis Nunomura, and N. izuharaensis Nunomura are synonyms ) to Agnara Budde-Lund, and Armadillo obscurus Budde-Lind to Venezillo Verhoeff. Several poorly known species are redescribed and illustrated.

  • The sand dollar, Astriclypeus manni is commonly encountered on a subtidal sand bottom along the coast of Cheju Island. limited information has been reported on their ecology despite their natural abundance. This study reports ecology and an annual reproductive cycle of the sand dollars present at Hamdock, northern coast of Cheju Island. A. manni collected from Hamdock revealed that they are 80 to 200 mm in test diameter. Sediment Brain size analysis indicated that A. manni mostly occurs on medium (particle diameter of 500 $\mu$m) to very find sand (particle diameter of 125 $\mu$m), particularly on fine sand (particle diameter of 250 $\mu$m). Internal morphology and in situ observations on their feeding habit indicated that A. manni is a deposit feeder, feeding on organic debris contained in the sediment around its habitat. A. manni were more frequently observed near Zostrea marina bed where content of organic matter in the sediment is considered to be higher. Gonadal tissues of the male were yellow in color while female gonads appeared to be purple. Fully mature eggs, with a mean diameter of 381 $\mu$m, and sperm were observed from the histological slides of the sand dollars collected in late July to August, suggesting that A. manni spawn during July to August when water temperature reaches 20 to $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Extraction yields of Hizikia fusiforme and Aloe vera Linne by supercritical carbon dioxide($SC-CO_{2}$) with and without ethanol as a cosolvent, and antimicrobial activities of the extracts against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Alternaria sp. were determined. Both yield and solubility of the extracts from Hizikia fusiforme and Aloe vera Linne by $SC-CO_{2}$ with ethanol were two times greater than those by only $SC-CO_{2}$. All of the extracts demonstrated antimicrobial activities in the decreasing order of bacteria, yeast and fungus. The extracts by $SC-CO_{2}$ with ethanol showed almost the same degree of microbial growth inhibition as those by only $SC-CO_{2}$. Based upon these data, it was speculated that the components soluble in nonpolar solvent might be more responsible for the antimicrobial activity.

  • The transient voltage characteristics of capacitor self-exited induction generator are analyzed by the state equation which is obtained from the d-q axis equivalent circuit of stationary reference frame and torque equation. The d-q equivalent circuit is composed using the condition of stationary reference frame. The mutual inductance is only considered as a function of magnetizing current in the equivalent circuit. The characteristics are analyzed and discussed by the backward Euler method for various load conditions under specified initial conditions and input.

  • Dogs with canine babesiosis may present with wide variation in the severity of clinical signs, ranging from a hyperacute, shock-associated, hemolytic crisis to an inapparent, subclinical infection. Dogs typically present with the acute form of babesiosis, which is characterized by general findings such as pyrexia, weakness, mucous membrane pallor, depression, hemorrhagic anemia. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of babesia spp. infection in dogs of Seogwipo-si. A survey of canine babesia spp. infections among 173 dogs in Seogwipo-si was performed from July 2008 to August 2008. Blood samples were collected from dogs raised outdoors through cephalic or jugular vein and Babesia spp. was diagnosed by examination of blood smear stained with Giemsa stain. Of 173 dogs, 9 dogs (5.2%) were infected with the babesia spp. This result was a little lower than the prevalence of Babesia spp. in dogs of other areas.

  • The floristic composition of the Korean-fir(Abies koreana Wilson) forest on Mt. Halla in Cheju Island, Korea, was described and some other phytosociological features were noted. The dense tree layer of the Abies koreana forest under consideration attained a height of no more than 5-7m. The shrub layer was 1.2-2m high and usually inconspicuous, while the herb layer, 0.3-0.5m high, was remarkable. The forest contained a number of species which are characteristic of the subalopine coniferous in Japan, particularly that in Hokkaido. Moreover, the specific synchronized regeneration called wave-regeneration was found in the forest on Mt. Halla at several sites even though the data on this phenomenon do not present in the present report.
