  • For the systematics study of the Holothuroidea in Cheju-do the present study was done with the materials collected from seven localities of Cheju-to (Cheju-hang, Piyangdo, Hallim, Sogwip'o, Tangp'o Songsanp'o, Udo) during the period from December 1969 to February 1986. As a result the holothurians in Cheju-do consit of nine species, six families, three orders and three subclasses. Of those five species are reported for the first time from Korean waters and they are as follows: Holothuria monacaria, H. pardalis, Afrocucumis africana, Leptosynapta ooplax and Polycheira rufescens.

  • It was compared the reduction effect of contaminants and odor according to DO change and EM (effective microorganisms) addition in maturation process of piggery slurry. The maturation processes were divided into three cases as follows: R-1 was operated at $2.5mg/{\ell}$ of DO without the addition of EM, R-2 was operated at $7.5mg/{\ell}$ of DO without the addition of EM and R-3 was operated at $2.5mg/{\ell}$ of DO with the addition of EM. The addition of EM was more effective than the increase of DO for the reduction of CODcr, $NH_3-N$ and T-N in the maturation of piggery slurry. In addition, the reducing effect of odor intensity appeared high even in the short-term maturation period in case of adding EM and one could not even smell the stimulating odor of piggery slurry.

  • For the systematic study of the bryozoans in Cheju-do, the present study was done with the materials collected from 13 localities of Cheju-do during the period from 1965 to 1985. As a result, 52 species were reported, bringing total number of species known from Cheju-do to 74. Of them eleven species were new to Korean fauna. They were as follows: Tubulipora pulchra, Ellisina canui, Labioporella sinuosa, Mucropetraliella mucroaviculata, Emballotheca pacifica, Hippomenella spatulata, Microporella cribrosa, Smittina raigii, Smittoidea prolifica, Parasmittina triangularis and Escharoides excavata.

  • Convection-dominated melting in a rectangular cavity is analyzed numerically with particular attention to the multi-cellular flows in the melt. At the earlier stage of the melting, the melt region is quite similar to a cavity with high aspect rati71, where the multi-cellular natural convection appears. Numerical results show that the formation and evolution of the multiple flow cells in the melt region is approximately similar to t]tat of a single-phase flow in a tall cavity with the same aspect ratio; however, the continuous change of the melt region due to the melting affects the detailed process. Also, numerical aspects for the prediction of the detailed flow structure in the melt are discussed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the arthropod fauna at tangerine orchards in Cheju-do island. To fulfil this purpose, samples were taken at 21 areas from the Cheju-do island 1985 to 1989. During this period, 33 species were identified, thus making 217 species, 99 genera, 31 families of spiders recorded from this island, In tangerine orchards alone, 26 species of spiders were found.

  • A study on the seasonal changes of the benthic macroinvertebrate community was performed on the intertidal rocky shores ao eastern coast of Cheju island and U-do throughout four seasons from october 1991 to August 1992. The macroinvertebrates were composed of 10 phyla, 18 classes, 39 orders, 94 families and 201 species. the number of speecies were 183 in summer, 147 in autumn, 138 in spring and 94 in winter, respectively. The total wpecies collected throuhout the study period were 193 species in U-do and 151 species in the eastern coast of Cheju Island. Nodilittorina exigua was the most dominant species in all seasons, followed by Monodonta neritoides in spring, autumn and winter, and pollicipes mitella in summer. U-do was higher in species diversity and richness and lower in evenness than the eastern coast. Species diversity and richness were higher in summer than any other seasons in lower intertidal zones. Community dominance indices, however, were significantly higher in upper intertidal zones than in lower intertidal zones.
