  • In order to investigate the relation between the marine environmental characteristics and the change of the catch in set net, the marine environment properties were analyzed by temperature and salinity observed in the western coastal area of Cheju Island from 1995 to 1996 and the results are as follows 1) Main axis of Tsushima Current appeared in the western coastal area of Cheju Island was off 2$\~$3 miles from November to May. Therefore the waters of high temperature over $14^{\circ}C$ and high salinity from $34.40\%_{\circ}$ to $34.60\%_{\circ}$ were distributed homogeneously from surface to bottom in this time. But China Coastal Waters of low salinity appeared in the Cheju Strait from June to October, surface waters became of high temperature and low salinity, and middle and bottom waters became of the temperature from 11 to $14^{\circ}C$ and the salinity over $33.50\%_{\circ}$ and then vertically sharp thermocline and halocline are formed in the western coastal area of Cheju Island. In summer, the water temperature and salinity of the surface waters in wstern coastal area of Cheju Island were lower and higher respectively than that in middle area of the Cheju Strait and the temperature and salinity of the bottom waters in this area were higher and lower, respectively than that in middle area of the Cheju Strait. Such a distribution shows a tidal front in this coastal area. On the whole year, surface temperature and salinity were from 14 to $23^{\circ}C$ and from 30.60 to $34.60\%_{\circ}$, respectively, and annual fluctuation range of temperature and salinity was within $9^{\circ}C$ and $4.00\%_{\circ}$, respectively, Thus, annual fluctuation range in this area is much narrower than that in the Cheju Strait. In bottom water, temperature ranges from 14 to $20^{\circ}C$ through the year. Thus, the fluctuation range of temperature is narrow. The low temperature of from $11^{\circ}C$ to $13^{\circ}C$ appeared in the west enterance of Cheju Strait was not shown in this coastal area. 2) The salinity of bottom water was from $33.60\%_{\circ}$ to $34.40\%_{\circ}$ in 1995, while low salinity wale. below $32.00\%_{\circ}$ appeared all depth from June in 1996. Thus, the variation of hydrographic conditions in this area is narrow in winter, and wide in summer due to the influence of China Coastal Waters. 3) In summer, surface cold water, local eddy and fronts of temperature and salinity were showed within 2 mile from the west coast of the Cheju Island due to vertical mixing by tidal current. Especially, temperature and salinity of bottom water are changed with the change of depth around Biyang-Do. Thus, the front of temperature and salinity appeared clearly between shallow area with the depth of under 10 m and deep area with of the depth of more than 50m. Surface water in outside area where high temperature and low salinity water appear intrudes between Worlreong-Ri and Geumreung-Ri. Thus, the front of temperature and salinity was made along the line that connects from this coast to Biyang-Do, The temperature of the bottom water is $2^{\circ}C$ to $4^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the surface water and its salinity is $0.02\%_{\circ}$ to $0.08\%_{\circ}$ higher than that of the surface water even in shallow area.

  • Biomass distribution of zooplankton showed its lowest level in June in the Cheju Strait, and the highest one was noticed in November when the secondary productivity is considered high. The highest biomass of zooplankton appeared in the sea areas of Sta. 14 and 11 respectively with relation to oceanographic conditions and wet weight of biomass. The positions were the center part of the Cheju Strait, while the sea area of the South Sea of Korea and the northern coast of Cheju Island showed relatively low biomass distribution. The characteristic of the sea area where biomass was densely distributed was it was in patch shape. Meanwhile, biomass distribution was higher in the northern sea area of Cheju Island than In the coastal sea of the South Sea of Korea. It shows formation of hairtail fishing grounds is closely related to biomass distribution in the Cheju Strait. In addition, high biomass is displayed in the center part of the saddle shaped ocean, a boundary of the heterogeneous water mass as a feature of fall oceanographic condition. Good fishing grounds of a hairtail In the Cheju Strait were formed outside of the sea area that showed patch-shaped high biomass distribution.

  • Soluble solids $(^{\circ}Brix)$, acid content and vitamin C content of Citrus miyakawa unshiu and C. okitsu unshiu juice harvested middle of November 1993 in Seuho-Dong and Topyung-Dong, Seogwipo-si, south area of Cheju were $10.7{\sim}11.0$, 1.04% and $41.19{\sim}44.94\;mg/100\;g$ juice, respectively. Carbohydrate was consisted of about 1/2 sucrose, 1/4 glucose, and 1/4 fructose. Fruit weight, peel thickness, soluble solids, pH, acid content and Brix/Acid ratio had a good correlation in linear function with increasing fruit size, respectively. However, hardness and edible part ratio were not showed correlation with increasing fruit size. Middle size of citrus fruit was favorable to panelists, and the citrus peel color of red yellow was more favorable than pale yellow color in sensory evaluation. Sensory evaluation score showed a linear correlation among citrus fruits of C. okitsu unshiu produced in Namwon-ri, Seuho-Dong, Seogwipo-si, south area of Cheju, and that of Chochun-ri, Ara-Dong, Cheju-si, north area of Cheju, and the score was higher according to citrus fruit produced in optimum cultivation area. With increasing Brix/Acid ratio of citrus juice, high sensory evaluation score was gained in panelists. These data obtained are supposed to be applied to the quality evaluation of Citrus unshiu produced in Cheju.

  • Mackerel purse seine fishery operating in the sea area of Cheju and Tsushima is one of the most important fishery in Korean off shore fishery, which a fishing fleet are generally composed with one purse seiner, two light ships and three or four fish carriers. In this study, purse seiners are classified in to four classes in term of their gross tonnage : A class(80-100tons), B class(100-120tons), C class(130-140tons), and D class(140-150tons). Operating sea area are divided into five sectors including east and west sea area of Tsushima Island, coastal sea area of Cheju Island and south and west sea area of Cheju Island. The performance of the purse seiner, the fishing efficiency, the dimension of fishing gear and variation of CPUE in each operating sea area are summarized as follows: 1. The relationship between a gross tonnage x and net area of purse seine y of a purse seiner can be expressed as : y=538.8x+99657.3 2. The index of seasonal variation of CPUE from May to October is lower than the standard value, whereas index from November to April is higher. 3. The power factor of fishing efficiency by classes of boat-size shows significant differences with 1% level in each operating sea area. 4. The net efficiency of purse seiner by classes of boat-sea shows that B and C classes are higher than A and D classes.

  • The Seoguipo Formation occurs only in a small exposure along the coast of the Seoguipo City, but in the subsurface, underlies tile western part of the Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line in the northeastern part of tile island. The Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line is presumed to be a facies boundary that reflects tile distribution of hyaloclastites resulted from submarine volcanic activity. The Seoguipo Formation is distributed in the subsurface along the part which is lower than 400m in average altitude, and occurs at El. -5.76∼-46.63m in tile southern area, El. -41.89∼-57.97m in the western area, El. -13.15∼-50.59m in the northern area. Therefore, the southern area was uplifted after the deposition of the Seoguipo Formation. In the subsurface, the vertical depth of the volcanic rocks of the Cheju Volcanic Edifice is El. -40.6m in the southern area, El. -111.3m in the western area, El. -81.5m in the northern area and El. -134.7m in the eastern area. The unconsolidated U Formation, which is, overlying the basement and about 70∼250m thickness underlies the whole island. There is a positive correlation between tile groundwater level and the depth of the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation. Consequently, it is conformed that the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation plays important role for controlling the characteristics of the reservoir of tile groundwater in Cheju Island.

  • Daytime surface zooplankton were collected bimonthly from April 1993 to March 1994 at six stations around upwelling and adjacent areas of Cosan, western part of Cheju Island. This paper deals with the occurrence, biomass and some other characteristics of zooplankton in these areas. Copepods had two peaks in the abundance in June $(235\;ind./m^3)$ and November $(301\;ind./m^3)$, but were not especially abundant in upwelling area. While gelatinous organisms seldom occurred in the upwelling, and the outer area with high density of $75\;ind./m^3$ (in June) and $458\;ind./m^3$ (in November) at the intermediate area, seasonal values of biomass with mean of $35.8\;mg/m^3$ were the highest in November and the lowest in January. Abundance of chaetognaths (mainly Sagitta spp.) ranged $15\~37\;inds./m^3$ and carcasses of Sagitta occurred very highly in the upwelling area in June ($54\%$ of total Sagitta organisms) and November $(70.5\%)$. Especially $48\~77\%$ of Sagitta individuals in upwelling area in November was attached by Oncaea mediterranea, O. venusta and Candacia bipinata. Pteropods with shells were sampled only in the upwelling area during strong upwelling season (November, $27\~64\;ind./m^3$), indicating the characteristics of ascending behavioral adaptation from the bottom water by upwelling.
