In this work, the behavior of conducting wire type particles existing inside the cylinder type coaxial electrode has been systematically investigated by charge simulation method and electrostatic force analysis from the view point of the acquired charging before being lifted off into the gap under the high ac voltage. Spheroidal charge are adopted as a image charge for the CSM analysis in order to calculate the acquired charges of the particles which are erected on the surface of the outer electrode. For this purpose, different material of the particle and their lengths and diameters have been considered in view to calculate their lift-off field, acquired charge and to understand their effect on the lift-off voltage. The results imply that the particle lengths and diameter have an different influence on the particle behavior in GIS system.
One of the main technical constraints of a conventional battery is the limited lifetime of electric energy supplied. With self-power generation using an internal radioisotope as an emitter of beta particles, and a PN-junction semiconductor as an absorber of the beta particles, a betavoltaic battery can provide electric energy to electric devices in a semi-permanent manner. Hence, a betavoltaic battery can be adopted as the solution to the power source issue of IoT devices placed in locations that people cannot easily access, such as in the deep sea, a desert, and space, and requiring a long operation time without an electrical charging. This paper covers the current trends in betavoltaic batteries including issues regarding their technology, application, and patents.
The purpose of the present work is to investigate the removal characteristics of positively charged filters for capturing negatively charged particles such as bacteria and virus in water. In order to reduce the pressure drop and increase the filtration efficiency, the filter media, modified by charge modifier having positive functional groups, is developed and evaluated. Improved liquid filters have been developed with the modified surface charge to capture and adsorb particles by electrokinetic interaction between the filter surface and particles contained in an aqueous liquid. The positively charged filter media is composed of glass fiber, cellulose and poly-ethylenimine resin for positively charging with the variation of volume ratio. The zeta potential value of the positively charged filter is +37.92 mV at the glass fiber and cellulose content ratio of 50 : 50 with resin content of 100%, while that of the PSL test particle is -23.5 mV at pH 7. The removal efficiency of the electro-positively charged filter is 98% for PSL particles of 0.11 ${\mu}m$, while that of the negatively charged filter is 7%. The positively charged filter media showed the potential to be an effective method for removing fine particles from the contaminated water for liquid filtration.
A SMPS(scanning mobility particle sizer) system measures the number size distribution of particles using electrical mobility detection technique. An aerosol charge neutralizer, which is a component of the SMPS, is a bipolar charger using a radioactive source to apply an equilibrium charge distribution to aerosols of unknown charge distribution. However, the performance of aerosol charge neutralizers is not well known, especially for highly charged particles. In this study, the effect of the particle charging characteristics of two aerosol charge neutralizers on the measurement using a SMPS system was experimentally investigated for highly charged polydisperse particles. One has radioactive source of $^{85}$ Kr (beta source, 2 mCi) and the other has $^{210}$ Po (alpha source, 0.5 mCi). The air flow rate passing through each aerosol charge neutralizer was changed from 0.3 to 3.0 L/min. The results show that the non-equilibrium character in particle charge distribution appears as the air flow rate increases although the particle number concentration is relatively low in the range of 1.5∼2x10$^{6}$ particles/㎤. The low neutralizing efficiency of the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer for highly charged particles can cause to bring an artifact in the measurement using a SMPS system. However, the performance of the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer is insensitive to the air flow rate.
Charged and uncharged particle motions and collection characteristics around a bipolar charged rectangular shape electret fiber are studied numerically. Particle inertia, fluid drag, Coulomb force and polarization force are considered to predict the particle motion around the electret fiber. The effects of particle sizes, flow velocities, number of charges and polarities are also systematically investigated. For small size particles, the single fiber collection efficiency is greatly dependent on the charge polarity and the number of charges on a particle. However, particles larger than 5.mu.m do not show charging effect on collection efficiencies in the flow velocity ranges from 1.5 cm/s to 150 cm/s when the maximum charges are within +5 to -10. The results show that a strong electric field gradient at the corner of the bipolar charged fiber plays a very important role on collecting particles regardless of its charge polarity because of the polarization force. It also shows that the most penetrating particle size for a single electret fiber decreases as the flow velocity increases and the number of charges of a particle decreases.

A hybrid dust-collector combining electrostatic charging with fabric filtration method was developed, and its performance characteristics were evaluated in this study. Charged particles build porous dendritic structure on the surfaces of filter by electrostatic attraction, increasing the collection efficiency of dust particles and reducing the pressure drop through the deposited dust layer and filter media. The cleaning performance of the dust layer is improved because the dendritic structured dust layer can be removed more easily by pulse jet cleaning flow. The results of the experiment showed a reduction of fine particle emission of 37% and the energy saving of 13% by precharging dust particles before filtration.
Charged liquid particle's behavior in electric and flow field was simulated to define the effect of electric field on the contact area and its dispersion. For the simulation of flow and electric field finite volume method was applied. To find out the particle's moving path in that field lagrangian equation of motion was solved by Runge-Kutta methods. We assumed that the particle was charged 10% of Rayleigh limit while the particle passing through the electrode and the particle does not have an effect on the electric field. In case of 30[Kv] of voltage charging the particles injected from the central 60% of the nozzle injection area adhere to the grounded moving plate and no dispersion occurred. Increasing the charged voltage to 40[Kv], it brought about the same phenomena as that of 30[Kv] charging except the dispersion. Voltage increasing from 30[Kv] to 40 [Kv] caused higher Coulomb force acts on the particle and it made the particle dispersion.
Among the lithium metal oxides for hybrid-capacity, $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}(LTO)$ is an emerging electrode material as zero-stain material in volume change during the with the charging and discharging processes. However, LTO has a limitation of low ionic and electronic conductivity. To enhance the ionic and electronic properties of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}(LTO)$, we synthesized the spherical LTO/CNT composite by sol-gel process for hybrid capacitors. CNT interconnection networks between CNT-LTO particles enhanced electronic conductivity and electrochemical charging/discharging properties. All of the LTO samples was observed to show the spinel structure and spherical morphology with the diameter of $5{\sim}10{\mu}m$. Especially, spherical LTO/CNT composite of the CNT-3 wt% showed the enhanced capacity from 110 mAh/g to 140 mAh/g at 10 C.
An electronic paper display was fabricated by injecting electronic ink, including white and black particles coated by positive and negative charge control agents (CCA), respectively, into closed cells surrounded by micro-barriers. These two types of charged, colored particles are easily damaged or their charging value can be changed by the injection process; therefore, the electrical and optical properties of the image panel fabricated by the injection method were estimated in this study. The active particle-loading method, proposed as a new electronic ink injection process, was applied, and the electro-optical properties of the resulting three-electrode-type e-paper image panel were analyzed. The reflection rate of the white image-panel fabricated with our new injection method was 24.7%, while that of the same panel fabricated with a previously reported injection method was 19.8%. In addition, the response time was improved by about five times compared to those reported in other publications.
Decay processes of accumulated charge in e-beam irradiated polymers during elevating temperature are observed using pulsed electro-acoustic measurement system. Since the polymeric materials have many superior properties such as light-weight, good mechanical strength, high flexibility and low cost, they are inevitable materials for spacecrafts. In space environment, however, the polymers sometimes have serious damage by irradiation of high energy charged particles. When the polymers of the spacecraft are irradiated by high energy charged particles, some of injected charges accumulate and remain for long time in the bulk of the polymers. Since the bulk charges sometimes cause the degradation or breakdown of the materials, the investigation of the charging and the decay processes in polymeric materials under change of temperature is important to decide an adequate material for the spacecrafts. By measuring the charge behavior in e-beam irradiated polymer, such as polyimide or polystyrene, it is found that the various accumulation and decay patterns are observed in each material. The results seem to be useful and be helpful to progress in the reliability of the polymers for the spacecraft.
