  • The interactions of iodine with toluidines (o-, m-, and p-) and N-methyltoluidines (o-, m-, and p-) in $CCl_4$ solution have been investigated through spectrophotometric measurements. The results indicate that toluidines and N-methyltoluidines form the one-to-one charge-transfer complexes with $I_2$ in solution. By comparing the values of the formation constants of the complexes, it is concluded that the relative stabilities of the $I_2$-amine complexes decrease in the following orders: p-toluidine >m-toluidine >aniline >o-toluidine, N-methyl-p-toluidine >N-methyl-m-toluidine >N-methylaniline >N-methyl-o-toluidine, N-methyltoluidines >toluidines. These results can be explained by the electron-releasing character and the steric effect of methyl group in the amine molecules.

  • Charge transfer complexes of some electron donors with one electron acceptor have been studied to investigate the maximum absorption wavelength and absorbance by UV-Vis spectrometer in three kinds of solvents, such as ethylene chloride, methylene chloride, and chloroform, at the temperature ranges of 16∼25$^{\circ}$C. 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydrocarbazole (THC), 2-methyl, 3-methyl, and 3-ethyl THC were selected as electron donors while chloranil was used as an electron acceptor in this study. It is found that these complexes forms 1 : 1 complexes, and their maximum absorbance and formation constants decreases with respect to the function of the polarity of solvent and temperature. The polarity of solvents and the temperature have been influenced on the formation constants, which were described using the thermodynamic properties. Moreover, the electronic and steric effects of electron donors have also been effects.

  • Formation of intermolecular charge-transfer complexes between 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and two different series of stilbene derivatives has been studied spectroscopically at $25^{\circ}$C in 1,2-dichloroethane. The compounds of Series I include stilbene and derivatives which have fused phenyl rings on one end of the central ethylene structure and a phenyl ring on the other end. The other Series, II, is comprised of stilbenes which have various para substituents on one of the two phenyl rings. The equilibrium constant, $K_c^{AD}$ and the molar extinction coefficient, ${\varepsilon}_{\lambda}^{AD}$, were determined using the Scott equation. The values of the charge-transfer transition frequency, ${\vu}_AD$ and $K_c{AD}$ correlated well respectively with the ionization potentials of the fused rings of Series Ⅰ or of the compounds of Series II and with the values of ${\sigma}_p$, the Hammett constants of the Series II substituents. trans-4-N,N-Dimethylaminostilbene and trans-4-nitrostilbene were found to be able to participate in electron transfer reaction with TCNQ forming the corresponding anion radical, TCNQ$^-$:

  • Catalytic effects of transition metal (Co2+, Ni2+) complexes of N,N-bis(salicylaldehyde)-o-phenylenediimine (SOPD), N,N-bis(salicylaldehyde)-m-phenylenediimine (SMPD), and N,N-bis(salicylaldehyde)-p-phenylenediimine (SPPD), on the reduction of thionyl chloride at glassy carbon electrode, are evaluated by determining the kinetic parameters with cyclic voltammetric technique. The charge transfer process for the reduction of thionyl chloride is strongly affected by the concentration of the catalysts. Some quadridentate Schiff base-M(Ⅱ) complexes show sizable catalytic activities for the reduction of thionyl chloride. Catalytic effects of [M(Ⅱ)(SOPD)] complexes are slightly larger compared to [M(Ⅱ)2(SMPD)2] and [M(Ⅱ)2(SPPD)2] complexes. On those electrodes deposited with the catalysts, the observed exchange rate constants (ko) are in the range of 0.89-2.28 × 10-7 cm/s, while it is 1.24 × 10-7 cm/s on the bare glassy carbon electrode.

  • The effect of pressures and temperatures on the stabilities of the durene-iodine charge transfer complex have been investigated through ultraviolet spectrophotometric measurements in n-hexane. The stabilities of complexes were measured at 25, 40 and $60^{\circ}C$ under $1{\sim}1600$ bars. The equilibrium constant of the complex was increased with pressure and decreased with temperature raising. The absorption coefficient was increased with both pressure and temperature. Changes of volume, enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the formation of complexes were obtained from the equilibrium constants. The red-shift observed at a higher pressure, the blue-shift at a higher temperature, and the relation between pressure and oscillator strength were discussed by means of thermodynamic functions.

  • The stabilities of the charge transfer complexes of pentamethyl benzene with iodine in n-hexane have been investigated by UV-spectrophotometric measurements at 25, 40 and 60$^{\circ}C$ up to 1600 bars. The equilibrium constant of the complex formation was increased with pressure while being decreased with temperature raising. Changes of volume, enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the formation of the complexes were obtained from the equilibrium constants. The red-shift at higher pressure, the blue-shift at higher temperature, and the relation between pressure and oscillator strength have been discussed by means of thermodynamic functions. In comparison with the results in the previous studies, the absolute values of ${\Delta}$V at each temperature were increased with the number of methyl groups of polymethyl benzene. However, it can be seen that both ${\Delta}$H and ${\Delta}$S show extreme behaviors in durene near atmospheric pressure but they are negatively increased with the number of methyl groups near 1600 bar. This order of the thermodynamic parameters may be a measure of the relative basicities of polymethyl benzenes toward iodine under each pressure, and these phenomena are explained in terms of a positive inductive effect and a steric hindrance effect of the polymethyl benzene molecule.

  • The weak UV absorbing ephedrine alkaloids such as ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, methylephedrine and norephedrine could be analyzed by charge-transfer spectrophotometric method. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) It was possible to determine a weak UV absorbing ephedrine alkaloids using the intense charge-transfer UV bands in chloroform. (2) This method was suitable for the spectrophotometric determination of ephedrine alkaloids in mixed pharmaceutical preparation. (3) Linear relationship was found between absorbance and concentration in the range of 1.0$\times$$10^{-5}M$~5$\times$$10^{-5}M$ of ephedrine ($\varepsilon$= 2.72$\times$$10^{4}LM^{-1}cm^{-1}$ and pseudoephedrine ($\varepsilon$=2.84$\times$$10^{4]LM^{-1}cm^{-1}$), 1.0$\times$$10^{-5}M$~5$\times$$10^{-5}$M of methylephdrine ($\varepsilon$=1.68$\times$$10^{4}LM^{-1}cm^{-1}$) and 1/3$\times$$10^{-4}M$~4/3$\times$$10^{-4}M$ of norephedrine ($\varepsilon$=0.74$\times$$10^{4}LM^{-1}cm^{-1}$. (4) CT- complex of ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and methylephedrine has absorption maxima at 293nm and norephedrine have absorption maximum at 253nm. (5) CT-complexes were formed in a 1:1 ratio between ephedrine alkaloids and iodine in chloroform. (6) By UV, IR, and $^1H$-NMR spectra, it could be inferred that CT-complexes were formed by interaction between the basic nitrogen of ephedrine alkaloids as electron (n) donor and iodine as electron ($\sigma$) acceptor.
