We have developed electrical power train for 1MW tidal current plant which is composed of both 500kW tidal current plant with doubly-fed induction generator and 500kW tidal current plant with synchronous generator. To check performances of the protype, 2MW dynamometer is used to simulate a helical turbine, and then protype generator and converter are coupled with the dynamometer separately. From the suggested experimental results it is reconfirmed that two kinds of the power train to be installed at the Uldolmok located at southwestern shore in Korea are able to operate under all kinds of the condition about speed and power.
This study analyzed the current meter records along with wind records for over 500 days obtained in the Kangjin Bay, South Sea, Korea spanning from March, 2003 to Nov. 2005. Various analyses include descriptive statistics, harmonic analysis of tidal constituents, spectra and coherence, the principal axis, progressive vector diagrams. These analyses can illustrate the response of residual current to the local wind resulting in the net drift with rotational motion. Current speed ranges from -28 to 33 (cm/sec), with standard deviations from 6.5 to 12.9 (cm/sec). The harmonic analyses of the tidal current show the average form number, 0.12 with semi-diurnal type and the rectilinear orientation of the major axis toward northeast. The magnitudes of the semi-major range from 12.7 to 17.7 (cm/sec) for M2 harmonics, while for S2 harmonics, they range from 6.3 to 10.4 (cm/sec), respectively. In the spectral and coherency analysis of residual current and wind, a periodicity of 13.6 (day) is found to be most important in both records and plays an important role in the net drift of residual current. The progressive vector diagrams of residual current and wind show two types of behaviors such as unidirectional drift and rotational motion. It was also found that 3 % rule holds approximately to drive 1 (cm/sec) drift current by 30 (cm/sec) wind speed based on the correlation of the semi-major axis of wind and residual current.

The flow pattern and water mass structure in the Chungmu channel were investigated using the field observations during June and July, 2001. The currents in the channel may be regarded as a hydraulic current decided by difference of tide levels between two sides in the channel. The strongest current in the channel occurs around in high water and low water. The coefficient C to be determined the characteristics of velocity in the channel was obtained from an equation, $u=C{\sqrt{2gh}}$ and ranges from 0.37 to 0.65 in the Chungmu Channel at the spring tide and from 0.23 to 0.37 at the neap tide. Eastward tidal transport is usually larger than that of westward transport in Chungmu the Channel. Sea water exchange rates are 39.2% in spring tide and 20.5% in neap tide respectively. The water mass structure in the channel is changed by the speed of the tidal current. The water mass is well mixed at the high water when the current is strong and is stratified at slack water when the current is weak.
The effective range of surface current data observed by high-frequency radar (HFR) operated in the northern coastal area of Jeju Island by Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology was estimated and the distribution and variability of the M2 tidal current of the Jeju Strait was analyzed. To evaluate the HFR data, the M2 tidal current corrected from 25 hours current data observed by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) was compared with the M2 tidal current in the Jeju Strait analyzed from the surface currents of HFR. The reliability of HFR data was confirmed by analyzing the characteristics of the tide components of these two data sets, and the effective range of HFR data was estimated through temporal and spatial analysis. The observation periods of HFR used in the analysis were from 2012 to 2014, and it was confirmed that there is a difference in the effective range of HFR data according to the observation time. During the analysis periods, the difference between the M2 current ellipses from the data of KHOA and the HFR was greater in the eastern than in the western part of the Jeju Strait, and represented a high reliability in the western and central parts of the Jeju Strait. The tidal current of the Jeju Strait analyzed using the HFR data revealed a seasonal variability a relatively weak in summer and a strong in winter, about a 17% fluctuations between the summer and winter based on the length of the semi-major axis of tidal ellipse. Appraisals and results of regarding the characteristics and seasonal variability of the M2 tidal current in the Jeju Strait using HFR data have not been previously reported, so the results of this study are considered meaningful.

This paper describes the resource assessment of theoretical potential of ocean energy including tidal current energy, tidal range energy, wave energy and ocean thermal energy in Korea to provide reliable basis for feasible development plan of ocean energy. Because of different characteristics of each ocean energy resources, the resource assessment methods were established considering characteristics of each ocean energy resources. The coastal region of Korea has been divided into 10 regions. The results show that tidal current energy is abundant in Incheon-Gyunggi and Jeollanam-do and tidal range energy is abundant in Incheon-Gyunggi. And wave energy is abundant in Jeollanam-do, Jeju and Gyeongsangbuk-do and there is ocean thermal energy in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do.

In order to understand the tidal current and mean flow at the west channel of Yeoja Bay in the South Sea of Korea, numerical model experiments and vorticity analysis were carried out. The currents flow north at flood and south at ebb respectively and have the reversing form in the west channel. Topographical eddies are found in the surroundings of Dunbyong Island in the east of the channel. The flood currents flow from the waters near Naro Islands through the west channel and the coastal waters near Geumo Islands through the east channel. The ebb currents from the Yeoja Bay flow out along the west and the east channels separately. The south of Nang Island have weak flows because the island is located in the rear of main tidal stream. Currents are converged at ebb and diverged at flood in the northwest of Jeokgum Island. Tidal current ellipses show reversing form in the west channel but a kind of rotational form in the east channel. As the results of tide induced mean flows, cyclonic and anticyclonic topographical eddies at the northern tip but eddies with opposite spin at the southern tip are found in the west channel of Yeoja Bay. The topographical eddies around the islands and narrow channels are created from the vorticity formed at the land shore by the friction between tidal currents and the west channel.

The mass transport is very complicated at the area which has the macro tide and complex geometry such as Gyeonggi bay. Especially, the long period current has a strong influence on the estuarine ecosystem and the long-term distribution of substances. The long period current is caused by several external forcing, whose unique characteristic varies spatially and temporally. The variation characteristics of long period current is analysed and its generation mechanism is studied. The tidal nonlinear constituents such as overtide and compound tide are generated due to nonlinear interaction and it causes mean sea level setup. The tidal wave propagating up into estuary is transformed rapidly by decrease of cross-sectional area and depth. Therefore the mean sea level is getting rise toward upriver. The high and low tide level is similar between down-river(Incheon) and up-river(Ganghwa) during neap tide when the tidal deformation is decreased. The tidal phase difference between two tidal stations causes a periodic fluctuation of sea level difference. The low water level of Ganghwa station during spring tide does not descend under EL(-)2.5 m, but the low water level of Incheon fall down under EL(-)4.0 m. The variation of tidal range and its sea level are increased during spring tide. It is found that the long period current $M_{sf}$ is quite similar to that of sea level difference between the two tidal stations. It means that the sea surface inclination caused by the spatial difference of tidal deformation is important forcing for the generation of long period current.
In order to examine the characteristics of tidal wave from the estuary to upsteam of tidal river, tidal asymmetry was identified based on analysis of the harmonic constants of M2 and M4 tidal constituents in the domestic western coastal regions. As shallow water tide is greatly developed in the estuary, flood dominance in Han River and Keum River, and ebb dominance in Youngsan River are developed. These tidal asymmetries can be reconfirmed by analyzing the tidal current data. Unlike having reciprocating tidal current patterns in Keum and Youngsan estuaries, rotaing tidal current pattern is shown in the Han River estuary due to the complex topography and waterways around Ganghwa Island area. However, when residual current is removed, flood dominance is shown in consistency with the tide data. The tidal asymmetry in the estuary tends to intensify with the growth in shallow water tide as the tidal wave propagates to upstream of tidal river. Energy dissipation, in shallow Han River and Keum River classified as SD estuaries, is very large regarding bottom friction characteristics. On the other hand, the deep Youngsan River, classified as a WD estuary, shows less energy dissipation.

As the problems of global warming are brought up recently, many skillful solutions for developing new renewable energy are suggested. One of the most remarkable things is ocean energy. Korea has abundant ocean energy resources owing to geographical characteristics surrounded by sea on three sides, thus the technology of commercialization about tidal current power, wave power is demanded. Especially, Tidal energy conversion system is a means of maintaining environment naturally. Tidal current generation is a form to produce electricity by installing rotors, generators to convert a horizontal flow generated by tidal current into rotating movement. According to rotor direction, a tidal current turbine is largely distinguished between horizontal and vertical axis shape. Power capacity depends on the section size crossing a rotor and tidal current speed. We therefore investigated three dimensional flow analysis and performance evaluation using commercial ANSYS-CFX code for an 100 kW class horizontal axis turbine for low water level. Then We also studied three dimensional flow characteristics of a rotating rotor and blade surface streamlines around a rotor. As a result, We found that torque increased with TSR, the maximum torque occurred at TSR 3.77 and torque decreased even though TSR increased. Moreover we could get power coefficient 0.38 at designed flow velocity.
