We have prepared an amphiphilic wedge-coil molecule consisting of a hydrophobic wedge-like segment and a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) segment. The wedge-coil block molecule self-assembles into cylindrical nanofibers in both polar as well as nonpolar solvents. Remarkably, the resulting nanofibers, as solvent polarity change from water to n-hexane, change from highly flexible coil-like to stiff rod-like characteristics. This dynamic switching in the stiffness of the nanofibers in response to solvent polarity is attributed to the structural inversion of cylindrical core from bulky dendritic segments with amorphous nature to crystallizable linear PEO segments.
Dielectrophoretic filtering and alignment of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were tested using deuterium oxide as a solvent. A solution of deuterium oxide-SWCNTs was dropped on top of a silicon chip and an ac electric field was applied between pre-defined electrodes. Deuterium oxide was found to be a better solvent than hydrogen oxide for the dielectrophoresis process with higher efficiency of filtering. This was demonstrated by comparing Raman spectra measured on the initial solution with those measured on the filtered solution. We found that the aligned nanotubes along the electric field were not deposited on the substrate but suspended in solution, forming chain-like structures along the field lines. This so-called pearl chain formation of CNTs was verified by electrical measurements through the aligned tubes. The solution was frozen in liquid nitrogen prior to the electrical measurements to maintain the chain formation. The current-voltage characteristics for the sample demonstrate the existence of conduction channels in the solution, which are associated with the SWCNT chain structures.
To investigate the effects of solvent extraction on electrical properties of LDPE, charge distribution, electrical conduction, and FT-IR experiments are carried out for three kinds of LDPE which are same for melt index (MI) and density. The effects of short chains for the charge distribution are quite different. For the electrical conduction, the electrical conduction mechanism remains unchanged, as the solvent extraction temperature is increased.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of thermal debinding and sintering conditions on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of PIMed 316L stainless steel. The water atomized powders were mixed with multi-component wax-base binder system, injection molded into flat tensile specimens. Binder was removed by solvent immersion method followed by thermal debinding, which was carried out in air and hydrogen atmospheres. Sintering was done in hydrogen for 1 hour at temperatures ranging from 1000℃ to 1350℃ The weight loss, residual carbon and oxygen contents were monitored at each stage of debinding and sintering processes. Tensile properties of the sintered specimen varied depending on the densification and the characteristics of the grain boundaries, which includes the pore morphology and residual oxides at the boundaries. The sinter density, tensile strength (UTS), and elongation to fracture of the optimized specimen were 95%, 540 MPa, and 53%, respectively.
The purpose of this paper is to design a hydraulic actuator to operate under high pressure conditions. The flow characteristics under design conditions of hydraulic actuator were numerically conducted by commercial fluid dynamic code(ANSYS CFX V11). The numerical analysis was performed by transient technique according to the variation of stroke times, which was changed from 0 to 1 second by interval of 0.01. Turbulence model, $k-\omega$ SST was selected to secure more accurate prediction of hydraulic oil flow. The ICEM-CFD 11 and CFXMesher, reliable grid generation software was also adapted to secure high quality grid necessary for the reliable analysis. According to the simulation results, the flow rate which was supplied to the hydraulic actuator was 30.4l/min. These results are in good agreement with design results within 3.5% error.
An ionic liquid-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction method has been successfully applied to the effective extraction of phenolic compounds from Laminaria japonica Aresch. Three kinds of 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium with different cations and anions were evaluated for extraction efficiency. The results showed that both the characteristics of anions and cations have remarkable effects on the extraction efficiency. In addition, the ionic liquid-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction procedure was also optimized on some extraction parameters, such as ultrasonic power, extraction time and solid-liquid ratio. Compared with the conventional solvent, the optimum approach gained the highest extraction efficiency within the shortest extraction time. Average recoveries of phenolic compounds were from 75.5% to 88.3% at three concentration levels.
A study has been made of the dry-jet-wet spinning of PAN copolymer fibers using 60% aqueous zinc chloride solution as solvent and 25∼40% aqueous zinc chloride solution as non-solvent. The technological characteristics of this method were that small streams of dope were extruded from the die and allowed to pass through a short distance of air gap(about 10mm) before entering the spinning bath for full coagulation. This work showed the importances which coagulation condition, stretch ratio and fiber tenacity up to 10.5 g/d could be obtained with elongation of 11∼16%. Individual fibers were evaluated on the basis of density and mechanical properties such as tenacity and elongation etc.
