  • Performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust-bearing and at the journal-bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano particles. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the disk on disk tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction. The average friction coefficient of nano-oil was reduced by 60% compared to raw oil under 600 N and 1,000 rpm. It is believed that the interaction of nano particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Worn surfaces of frictional specimen were also investigated by the optical and atomic force microscopy. Conclusively, it is expected that wear and friction coefficient of compressor can be reduced by alignment applying nano-oil as refrigerant oil.

  • Failure of basic structures material is usually accompanied by expansion of interior cracks due to stress concentration at the cracks tip. This phenomenon shows the importance of examination of the failure behavior of concrete structures. To this end, 4 types of mortar samples with different amounts of nano-silica (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) were made to prepare twelve $50{\times}50{\times}50mm$ cubic samples. The goal of this study was to describe the failure and micro-crack growth behavior of the cement mortars in presence of nano-silica particles and control mortars during different curing days. Failure of mortar samples under compressive strength were sensed with acoustic emission technique (AET) at different curing days. It was concluded that the addition of nano-silica particles could modify failure and micro-crack growth behavior of mortar samples. Also, monitoring of acoustic emission parameters exposed differences in failure behavior due to the addition of the nanoparticles. Mortar samples of nano-silica particles revealed stronger shear mode characteristics than those without nanoparticles, which revealed high acoustic activity due to heterogeneous matrix. It is worth mentioning that the highest compressive strength for 3 and 7 test ages obtained from samples with the addition of 1.5% nano-silica particles. On the other hand maximum compressive strength of 28 curing days obtained from samples with 1% combination of nano-silica particles.

  • The characteristics of abrasive wear of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The cumulative wear volume and friction coefficient of these materials on particle volume fraction were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, ploughing, deboding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the tested surface. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinear with increase of sliding distance. As increasing the silica particles of these composites indicated higher friction coefficient.

  • Explosion characteristics of micro-sized aluminum dusts had been studied by many researchers, but the research of nano-sized aluminum dusts were very insufficient. In this study, an experimental investigation was carried out on the influences of nano and micro-sized aluminum dusts (70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$) on dust explosion properties of aluminum particles by using 20 L explosion apparatus. With decreasing of particle size in suspended aluminum dusts, the LEC (lower explosion concentration) of nano-sized aluminum is lower than that of micro-sized aluminum. The particle size change of nano-sized aluminum dusts seems no obvious explosion differences than that of micro-sized aluminum dusts. From the observation of nano-sized aluminum particles by TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), it is estimated that increase of particles aggregation may have effects on the explosion characteristics of aluminum nanopowders.

  • Nano composite particles were synthesized from a bulk ZrVFe alloy ingot by transferred DC thermal plasma. Effects of plasma gas flow rate on the characteristics of the produced nano composite particles were investigated. The characteristics of the synthesized powder were analyzed by field scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), light scattering particle size analyzer (PSA), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analyzer. As the flow rate of plasma gas increased from 20 L/min to 40 L/min, the average particle size decreased from 91 nm to 55 nm, the particle size distribution became narrower, the surface area increased from $200\;m^2/g$ to $255\;m^2/g$, the particle composition was nearly unaffected, and the particle crystallinity was improved.

  • Recent research has focused on engine combustion technology as well as application of after-treatment in order to comply with emission regulation. However, it is much more efficient way to control emissions from engine itself and furthermore research on engine control will provide the direction of after-treatment technology in future. Furthermore, emission standard regulation for passenger diesel vehicles has been stringent compared to others and nano-particles will be included in EURO6 regulation in Europe and similar emission standard will be introduced in Korea. A 3.0 liter high speed diesel engine equipped with by CRDI system of 160MPa injection pressure, and an intake/exhaust system of V type 6 cylinder turbo-intercooler was applied. The injection duration and injection quantity, pilot injection types which are related to CRDI and air/fuel ratio control applied by EVGT were changed simultaneously. Standard experiment procedure constituted dilution apparatus and CPC system to collect nano-particles and these test results were compared with regulated materials of CO, HC, NOx and investigated their relations and characteristics of nano-particles.

  • In recent years, Nano-technology significantly invaded the field of Geotechnical engineering, particularly in soil stabilisation techniques. Stabilisation of weak soil is envisioned to modify various soil characteristics by the addition of natural or synthetic materials into the virgin soil. In the present study, laboratory experiments were executed to investigate the influence of nano-silica particles in the consistency limits, compressive strength of the soft clay blended with cement. The results revealed that the high compressibility behaviour of soft clay modified to medium-stiff condition with fewer dosages of cement and nano-silica. The mechanism behind the strength development is verified with the previous researches as well as from Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction test (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Based on the results, the presence of nano-silica in soft clay blended with cement has a positive effect on the behaviour of soil. This technique proves to be very economical and less detrimental to the environment.

  • The dynamics of nano particles in LC medium under an external electric field is of theoretical and technological interest. In this work, the dynamical characteristics of fullerene $(C_{60})$ particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under dc electric field have been investigated. This effect was studied for homogeneously aligned nematic LC cells driven by in-plane field. The $C_{60}$ was found to be aggregated in a form of cluster inside the LC medium. Hence polystytene was used to protect the aggregation of $C_{60}$ in LC medium. When the electric field was applied, the fullerenes start to move in direction of applied electric field. The density of $C_{60}$'s particles at the electrodes increase with increase in the value of applied electric field. The dynamical motions of fullerene $(C_{60})$ particles in liquid crystal (LC) suggest that fullerene can be designed for electrophoretic displays (i.e., electronic ink).

  • This study describes effects of DME additives on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics including nano-particle in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Considered additives include bio-diesel, n-butanol, and MTBE for increasing kinematic viscosity. Among three additives, n-butanol showed the greatest kinematic viscosity. In addition MTBE showed the highest vapor pressure. In the present study mixing ratios of additives were kept constant at 1 and 10% by volume. Experiments were performed at 1200rpm engine speed and nano-particles were measured by SMPS (Scanning mobility particle sizer) devices. Results of combustion characteristics showed that considered additives had little effects on combustion pressure. However, patterns of heat release rate were dependent on properties of additives. Nano-particles of MTBE were the lowest among considered additives.

  • Carbon particle based nanocomposites have been studied. Nanocomposites containing CNT and graphite particles were manipulated by aligning the micro/nano-size particles with electric field. Electric field is applied to the suspension of epoxy matrix and particulate inclusions in order to align them along the direction of the electric field. Particles aligned in a uniform direction act as a fiber in a CFRP composite. The mechanical strength and physical characteristics highly depend on particles' distribution pattern and amount. In this study, the characteristics of radioactive barrier are emphasized, which has been rarely discussed in the literature. A number of sample coupons were tested to verify their performance. The procedure of manufacturing nanocomposites by means of extremely small size particle alignment is presented in sequence. Several physical and structural performances of composites containing aligned and randomly distributed particles were compared. The results show particle alignment is very effective to enhance directional strength and radioactive barrier performance.
