  • This paper presents an experimental investigation of the tribological characteristics of PTFE composites filled with nano CuO particles under low sliding speed and load. All the specimens were prepared by sintering. Before sintering, the mixture of PTFE powder and CuO particles were mixed by a high-speed mixer using CuO volume fractions of 0.2 vol. % and 5 vol. %. Each mixture was sintered at 350 ℃ for 30 min on the steel disk. We conducted ball-on-disk sliding test an hour using a steel ball against PTFE composites, including pure PTFE. The load and sliding speed used was 2 N and 0.01 m/s, respectively. Adding nano CuO particles increases the friction coefficient because of the abrasiveness of hard nano CuO particles. The highest coefficient of frictions was obtained from 5 vol. % CuO. Conversely, the lowest wear of the composites was obtained from the 5 vol. % CuO nanocomposite. This study reveals that the addition of nano CuO particles can lower the wear of PTFE, despite an increase in the coefficient of friction. However, the coefficient friction is still moderate compared to other engineering polymers. In addition, the amount of CuO nano particles has to be optimized to reduce friction and wear at the same time.

  • As the indoor activity increases in recent years, the indoor air quality becomes more important. One of the major contaminants in office space is the copy machines and the laser based printers. These devices usually emit nano-particles and chemical species that may give some health effect. The amount of particles generated by the printers and copy machines depend on printer models, printing speed, toners, papers, humidity and so on. To evaluate the emission rate of nano-particles from Laser Printers, the mass concentration measurement method has been used (BAM, 2004). However, the mass concentration measurement method for nano-particles is tedious and time consuming. Therefore, for the development of a new nano-particle counting method, the nano-particle emission characteristics and size distributions are evaluated.

  • The research on electromagnetic shielding has been advanced for military applications as well as for commercial products. Utilizing the reflective properties and absorptive properties of shielding material, the replied signal measured at the rear surface or at the signal source can be minimized. The shielding effect was obtained from materials having special absorptive properties and structural characteristics such as stacking sequence. Recently researchers studied the electromagnetic properties of nano size particles. In this research {glass fiber}/{epoxy}/{nano particle} composites(GFR-Nano composites) was fabricated using various nano particles, and their properties in electromagnetic shielding were compared. For the visual observation of the nano composite materials, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and TEM(Transmission Electron Microscope) were used. For the measurement of electromagnetic shielding, HP8719ES S-parameter Vector Network Analyser System was used on the frequency range of 8 GHz${\~}$12GHz. Among the nano particles, carbon black and Multi-Walled Carbon Nano-Tube (MWCNT) revealed outstanding electromagnetic shielding. Although silver nano particles (flake and powder) were expected to have effective electromagnetic shielding due to their excellent electric conductivities, test results showed little shielding characteristics.

  • Pin-to-disc wear testing experiments were conducted to investigate the wear characteristics of commercial oil (5W-40) with nano-diamond particles. The upper specimen was a SUJ-2 high-carbon chromium steel ball with a diameter of 4 mm, and the lower specimen was made of the Al-6061 alloy. The applied load was 5 N, and the sliding speed was 0.25 m/s. The wear tests were conducted at a sliding distance of 500 m. The friction coefficients and wear rates of the Al-6061 specimens were tested using commercial oil with different nano-diamond concentrations ranging from 0 to 0.02 wt.%. The addition of nano-diamond particles to commercial oil reduced both the wear rate and coefficient of friction of the Al-6061 alloy. The use of nano-diamond particles as a solid additive in oil lubricants was found to improve the tribological behavior of the Al-6061 alloy. For the Al-6061 alloy, the optimal concentration was found to be 0.005 wt.% in view of the friction coefficient and wear rate. Further investigation is needed to determine the optimal concentration of nano-diamond particles for various loadings, sliding speeds, oil temperatures, and sliding distances.

  • This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano-particles in the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors. Frictional loss in the thrust slide-bearing occupies a large part of total mechanical loss in scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil are evaluated using the thrust bearing tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the thrust slide-bearing as a function of normal loads up to 4,000 N and orbiting speed up to 3,200 rpm. It is found that the coefficient of friction increases with decreasing orbiting speed and normal force. The friction coefficient of carbon nano-oil is 0.015, while that of pure oil is 0.023 under the conditions of refrigerant gas R-22 at the pressure of 5 bars. It is believed that carbon nano-particles can be coated on the friction surfaces and the interaction of nano-particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Carbon nano-oil enhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors.

  • Recently, innovative process has been investigated in order to replace the conventional high-cost micro patterning processes on the electronic products. To produce desirable profit margins from this low cost products, printed circuit board(PCB), will require dramatic changes in the current manufacturing philosophies and processes. Innovative process using metal nano particles replaces the current industry standard of subtractive etched of copper as a highly efficient way to produce robust circuitry on low cost substrates. An advantage of using metal nano particles process in patterned conductive line manufacturing is that the process is additive. Material is only deposited in desired locations, thereby reducing the amount of chemical and material waste. Simply, it just draws on the substrate as glass epoxy or polyimide with metal nano particles. Particles, when their size becomes nano-meter scale, show some specific characteristics such as enhanced reactivity of surface atoms, decrease in melting point, high electric conductivity compared with the bulk. Melting temperature of metal gets low, the metal nano particles could be formated onto polymer substrates and sintered under $300^{\circ}C$, which would be applied in PCB. It can be getting the metal line of excellent electric conductivity.

  • To synthesize $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor powder of nano size and high luminescence efficiency under UV (ultraviolet) and VUV (vacuum ultraviolet) light, organic additives such as citric acid and ethylene glycol and $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ flux were introduced in large-scale spray pyrolysis and critical conditions for forming nano-sized particles were investigated. The $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor particles prepared from solutions with organic additives such as citric acid and ethylene glycol had micron size and spherical shape. However, the particles prepared from polymeric precursor solution with $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ flux had nano size and non-aggregation characteristics. The as-prepared spherical particles with micron size turned into nano-sized particles during post-treatment by recrystallization process. The nano-sized $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor particles showed higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor product under both UV light of 254nm and VUV light of 147 nm.

  • The functional non-woven fabrics have been applied in various industry fields, such as clothing, hygiene, environment, medical and so forth. The functional non-woven fabrics were manufactured by meltblown and finishing processes. These functional non-woven fabrics were made of 2,000ppm nano-silver resin composite and polypropylene resin. Silver is one of the most universal antimicrobial substances. Nano-technology enables us to expand the surface area of silver particles markedly. Nano-silver particles were successfully produced less than 10nm in size. The functional non-woven fabrics including nano-silver particles showed excellent antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 6538) and Klebsieila pneumoniae (ATCC 4352). From the results, nano-silver particels probably will be available as a good and safe antibiotic alternative.

  • $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles with nano-sized and non-aggregation characteristics were prepared by spray pyrolysis using the spray solution containing polymeric precursor and $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux material. Nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles. The $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had nano-size and non-aggregation characteristics after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ when the addition amount of $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%. The mean size of particles were 200 nm and 400 nm when the amount of flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%, respectively. The prepared phosphor particles had higher photoluminescence intensity than that of the commercial product regardless of the content of$ Li_2$$CO_3$ flux and had the maximum brightness when the content of flux was 5 wt %. The photoluminescence intensity of the nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles containing 3 wt.% $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 125% in comparison with that of the micron-sized $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu commercial product.
