  • In this paper, the effect of volute area distribution on the performance characteristic curve of a centrifugal pump were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code. To reduce the shutoff head, maintaining head and efficiency at a design flow rate, the flat head-capacity characteristic curves in which the head varies only slightly with capacity from shutoff to design capacity are frequency required. In order to control the shutoff head of a pump, several volute area distributions were proposed as a main parameter with the same impeller geometry. The calculation results show that the characteristic curve of a centrifugal pump can be controlled by modifying the area distribution with the same volute outlet area.

불포화토의 흙-수분 특성곡선에 관한 실험적 고찰 (Experimental Study for Soil-Water Characteristic Curves of Unsaturated Soil)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the soil-water characteristic curves for an unsaturated soil. To this ends, a series of suction measured test was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soils taken from different sites of Korea, using modified pressure plate apparatus. Form the test results, the water contents, degree of saturation and volumetric water contents were analyzed with the suction. And the soil-water characteristic curves of unsaturated soil were drawn from the test results for various factors. The characteristic curves drawn with water content vs matric suction were classified certainly the difference in wet side but were not classified in dry side. The characteristic curves drawn with degree of saturation vs matric suction for unsaturated soil were shown the opposite inclination as compared with the former curve. But the characteristic curve with volumetric water content vs matric suction was described suitably not only in wet side condition but also in dry side. And it was found that the volumetric water contents of loose soil was high at the initial condition but that of dense soil was high at final condition (dry side).

NONPARAMETRIC MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD ESTIMATION OF A CONCAVE RECEIVER OPERATING CHARACTERISTIC CURVE VIA GEOMETRIC PROGRAMMING

  • A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve plots the true positive rate of a classier against its false positive rate, both of which are accuracy measures of the classier. The ROC curve has several interesting geometrical properties, including concavity which is a necessary condition for a classier to be optimal. In this paper, we study the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of a concave ROC curve and its modification to reduce bias. We characterize the NPMLE as a solution to a geometric programming, a special type of a mathematical optimization problem. We find that the NPMLE is close to the convex hull of the empirical ROC curve and, thus, has smaller variance but positive bias at a given false positive rate. To reduce the bias, we propose a modification of the NPMLE which minimizes the $L_1$ distance from the empirical ROC curve. We numerically compare the finite sample performance of three estimators, the empirical ROC curve, the NMPLE, and the modified NPMLE. Finally, we apply the estimators to estimating the optimal ROC curve of the variance-threshold classier to segment a low depth of field image and to finding a diagnostic tool with multiple tests for detection of hemophilia A carrier.

  • In the field of clinical medicine, diagnostic accuracy studies refer to the degree of agreement between the index test and the reference standard for the discriminatory ability to identify a target disorder of interest in a patient. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve offers a graphical display the trade-off between sensitivity and specificity at each cutoff for a diagnostic test and is useful in assigning the best cutoff for clinical use. In this end, the ROC curve analysis is a useful tool for estimating and comparing the accuracy of competing diagnostic tests. This paper reviews briefly the measures of diagnostic accuracy such as sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) that is a summary measure for diagnostic accuracy across the spectrum of test results. In addition, the methods of creating an ROC curve in single diagnostic test with five-category discrete scale for disease classification from healthy individuals, meaningful interpretation of the AUC, and the applications of ROC methodology in clinical medicine to determine the optimal cutoff values have been discussed using a hypothetical example as an illustration.

  • In the distribution system, Change of system happens frequently. However, most of the relays are operated manually by a person or not changed when system changed. So, when fault happened, a case that relaydoes not act rapidly happens. Also, in current power system, digital relays are used because of digitization of relay. Digital relay has very many advantages than existing analog relay. One of these advantages is that communication is available and easily can make characteristic curve. If specific values are sent to a relay by communication, A relay can make suitable characteristic curve according to the value. In this paper, by using voltages and currents measured by relay, state of CB(Circuit Breaker) and these relays, SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system that control and correct characteristic curve of overcurrent relay at system change by using HMI(Human Machine Interface) is proposed.

  • The purpose of this paper was to derive soil-water characteristic curve equation for unsaturated soil. To this end, a series of suction measured test was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soil which is located in Korea, used the modified pressure plate apparatus. From the test results, it was proved that characteristic curve changes according to grain size distribution, size of void and fine grained soil contents. Residual degree of saturation(Sr) was decreased with void ratio and changed with fine grained soil contents, parameter ${\lambda}$ and hr was increased with void ratio. Soil-water characteristic curve equation based on the test result was suggested by void ratio or grain size distribution.

Positive and negative predictive values by the TOC curve

  • Sensitivity and specificity are popular measures described by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. There are also two other measures such as the positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV); however, the PPV and NPV cannot be represented by the ROC curve. Based on the total operating characteristic (TOC) curve suggested by Pontius and Si (International Journal of Geographical Information Science, 97, 570-583, 2014), explanatory methods are proposed to geometrically describe the PPV and NPV by the TOC curve. It is found that the PPV can be regarded as the slope of the right-angled triangle connecting the origin to a certain point on the TOC curve, while 1 - NPV can be represented as the slope of the right-angled triangle connecting a certain point to the top right corner of the TOC curve. When the neutral zone exists, the PPV and 1-NPV can be described as the slopes of two other right-angled triangles of the TOC curve. Therefore, both the PPV and NPV can be estimated using the TOC curve, whether or not the neutral zone is present.

Bayesian hierarchical model for the estimation of proper receiver operating characteristic curves using stochastic ordering

  • Diagnostic tests in medical fields detect or diagnose a disease with results measured by continuous or discrete ordinal data. The performance of a diagnostic test is summarized using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC). The diagnostic test is considered clinically useful if the outcomes in actually-positive cases are higher than actually-negative cases and the ROC curve is concave. In this study, we apply the stochastic ordering method in a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate the proper ROC curve and AUC when the diagnostic test results are measured in discrete ordinal data. We compare the conventional binormal model and binormal model under stochastic ordering. The simulation results and real data analysis for breast cancer indicate that the binormal model under stochastic ordering can be used to estimate the proper ROC curve with a small bias even though the sample sizes were small or the sample size of actually-negative cases varied from actually-positive cases. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider the binormal model under stochastic ordering in the presence of large differences for a sample size between actually-negative and actually-positive groups.

국내 풍화토의 함수특성곡선 및 불포화 투수계수 추정에 관한 연구 (Estimation of Soil Water Characteristic Curve and Unsaturated Permeability Coefficient for Domestic Weathered Grainite Soil)

  • The coefficient of permeability is one of the most important properties in unsaturated soils. The permeability varies with change in the water content as the soil water characteristic curve(SWCC) does. Thus the permeability curve of unsaturated soils has the similar shape with the soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC). Therefore, the methodologies have been studied to simply predict the unsaturated permeability from the SWCC. In this study, the experimental tests of SWCC and permeability were carried out for domestic weathered granite soils. The SWCC test results were fitted to Fredlund and Xing's SWCC equation and then it was found that there are some relationships between the parameters of SWCC equation and the basic soil properties. Accordingly we used an ANN(artificial neural network) model to obtain the SWCC parameters from the basic soil properties. Finally, the coefficients of permeability were predicted from these results by a prediction model.

강우재현 모형실험과 SWCC Cell 실험에 의한 화강암질 풍화토의 함수특성곡선 (Soil Water Characteristic Curve of the Weathered Granite Soil through Simulated Rainfall System and SWCC Cell Test)

  • 강우재현장치를 제작하고, 강우 및 사면조건에 따라 강우재현 모형실험과 함수특성곡선실험(SWCC Cell Test)을 실시하여 불포화 특성에 관해 연구하였다. 그 결과를 이용하여 강우에 따른 침투거동 특성과 함수특성곡선 모델들의 불포화된 화강암질 풍화토에 대한 적용을 검토하였다. 강우재현 모형실험의 습윤과정(강우재현)과 건조과정(방치)에서 계측된 체적함수비와 모관흡인력을 비교한 결과 체적함수비는 $2{\sim}5%$, 모관흡인력은 $3{\sim}10\;kPa$ 정도 값의 차이를 보여 이력현상을 확인 할 수 있었다. 또한, 모관흡인력의 값이 체적함수비의 값에 비해 상대적으로 큰 차이를 보여 모관흡인력에 이력거동이 더 큼을 확인할 수 있었다. 강우재현 모형실험과 함수특성곡선실험에서 얻은 결과로부터 구한 함수특성곡선을 비교하면, 습윤과정과 건조과정에서 두 방법 모두 근접한 함수특성곡선을 얻을 수 있었으나, 두 방법 모두 습윤과정과 건조과정에서의 결과는 차이가 있었다. 이로써 불포화토의 특성을 고려한 보다 합리적인 설계나 안정검토에 함수특성곡선을 적용시킬 때에는 습윤과정에서는 습윤과정 함수특성곡선을 건조과정에서는 건조과정 함수특성곡선을 적용하는 것이 합당할 것으로 여겨진다.
