  • High-luminance CNT-FED character-displays using simple line-rib-structure was performed. One display-panel had $48{\times}480$-dots and the sub-pixel pitch was 1mm. Another panel had $32{\times}256$-color-pixels, and the subpixel size was $0.6mm{\times}1.8mm$. The power consumption was less than 10W at character-displaying module. It should be useful for public display even under emergent no-power condition.

  • This study has developed a new system of character generator which is able to display more thats 14,364 different Korean characters by the 24 fundamental input elements. That is. in this system, all of the Korean characters are fomalized into 30 kinds of character forms (each having 70-980 characters), from which six form featuares are detacted to control and combine the fundamental input elements at their proper sizes and positions in a character frame. The device is very simple and all of the Korean characters can be displayed on CRT by the operation of only 24 input keys in good character quality.

  • The readability and the visuability are very significant when the letters or figures are displayed as static visual information. Not only is the beauty of the body type character(small letters) important but the display type character(large letters) should also be read easily, quickly and precisely. The issue regarding the readability in terms of perception of information has been raised continuously for all kinds of small signage and billboard, etc., which are written in display type within our everyday life. Among the various kinds of small signage and billboards the car licence plate is well known. Among all the possible factors that would have made an impact on the readability of licence plate, this paper focused on the effects of arrangement of character(letters and figures) and contrast of colors for the readability of licence plate using the within-subject analysis. The statistical analysis results in error reading rate, the character arrangement were significant but the color contrast(green/white, white/green, blue/white, white/blue, black/yellow) was not, No interaction was found.

  • Recognition of characters printed or marked on the PCB components from images captured using cameras is an important task in PCB components inspection systems. Previous optical character recognition (OCR) of PCB components typically consists of two stages: character segmentation and classification of each segmented character. However, character segmentation often fails due to corrupted characters, low image contrast, etc. Thus, OCR without character segmentation is desirable and increasingly used via deep neural networks. Typical implementation based on deep neural nets without character segmentation includes convolutional neural network followed by recurrent neural network (RNN). However, one disadvantage of this approach is slow execution due to RNN layers. LPRNet is a segmentation-free character recognition network with excellent accuracy proved in license plate recognition. LPRNet uses a wide convolution instead of RNN, thus enabling fast inference. In this paper, LPRNet was adapted for recognizing characters printed on PCB components with fast execution and high accuracy. Initial training with synthetic images followed by fine-tuning on real text images yielded accurate recognition. This net can be further optimized on Intel CPU using OpenVINO tool kit. The optimized version of the network can be run in real-time faster than even GPU.

  • This study evaluated the effects of the syllable number(one, two), font type(gothic, myung), color contrast (black on white, white on black), display type(paper, LCD), age(20s, 60s) and character size(2~80pt) on the Korean characters' legibility. Total twenty subjects from two age groups (20s: n=10, 60s: n=10, five male and five female in each group) participated in the legibility test. A target panel was presented in the distance of 50 cm, and subjects conducted a reading tests for, in total, 16 treatment conditions (full combination of syllable number, font type, color contrast and display type). Results showed that two-syllable words revealed better legibility than one-syllable character. The main effects of the age, display type, font type, color contrast, and character size were statistically significant(p<0.01). Paper showed better legibility than LCD, particularly in the 20s and in the character sizes of less than 9pt. Gothic revealed more correct answers than Myung, particularly in the 60s, paper, and white on black conditions. It is expected that these results can provide basic data for the determination of the Korean characters' minimum legible size standards. For example, the minimum legible size for the Gothic and black on white characters presented in the paper should be 5pt for 20s and 1lpt for 60s if the 75% correct reading(3 correct answers in this study) was applied for the legibility criterion.

  • In this paper, we introduce the three-dimensional Korean character display by using 2D fonts and character depth. Character segments are designed by the set of vertex at run time. Character depth is applied for 3D visualization. And, the variation of eye-point and distance of object is used for 3D character animation.

  • In this paper, We have developed the Internet web browser for the blind and visually impaired person. The Internet Web browser system consists of personal computer connected to Internet, braille display, voice synthesis devices for character information, tactile display for the representation of web image and braille printer for web page printing. We convert character in the web page to braille and print it to braille display. The image in the web page is printed with tactile display actuated by solenoid. The blind can acess the Internet web site with this web browser system and understand the Internet information.

  • This paper proposes a new method of character segmentation in a grayscale image using the standard deviation. Firstly, the proposed method scans vertically the region of interest in an image in order to calculate a standard deviation for each scan line. Characters' standard deviations are much bigger than the background's. Therefore, it is possible to segment characters vertically using the differentiation of those two types of standard deviations. Secondly, the method scans each vertically segmented image horizontally at this time, and then segments each image similarly. The proposed method is implemented using C language in an embedded Linux system for a high-speed real-time image processing. Experiments were conducted by using credit card images. The results show that the proposed algorithm is quite successful for most credit cards. However, the method fails in some credit cards with strong background patterns.

  • We demonstrated the character display unit using a binary phase hologram array and a liquid crystal-spatial light modulator (LC-SLM). It combines the dynamic property of the LC-SLM with the high-efficiency property of the phase hologram fabricated by photolithography. Experimental results of the proposed unit are presented. The character display unit proposed in this paper has a fundamental and important meaning as new method displaying images by using light, and it will be used in optical information processing and optical communications fields.
