Ad hoc wireless networks operate without any infrastructure where a node can be a source and a router at the same time. This indispensably requires high throughput and low delay performance throughout the wireless network coverage span, particularly under heavy traffic conditions. Recent research on using multiple antennas in beam-forming or multiplexing modes over a wireless channel has shown promising results in terms of high throughput and low delay. Directional antennas have shown to increase spatial reuse by allowing multiple transmitters and receivers to communicate using. directional beams as long as they do not significantly interfere with each other. However directional antenna performance asymptotically approaches the omni-directional performance in a high density ad hoc network. Simulation results in QualNet validate that average throughput and packet corruption ratio of directional antenna approach omni-directional performance. Moreover, we further highlight some important issues pertaining to the directional antenna performance in wireless networks.
This research aims 1) to characterize the spatial distribution of low relief landforms (plains) via analyses of a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), 2) to classify plains according to morphological and genetic similarity, and 3) to develop a model to explain forming processes of plains in the Korean peninsula. Plains can easily be separated from high relief mountaneous areas by analyzing the DEM. The overall morphological and locational characteristics of plains can be categorized into lava plains, fluvial-marine plains, erosional plains, intermontane basins, and higher ground plains. It is concluded that the characteristic of each plain type is decided by base-level changes caused by tectonic uplift and sea-level changes, and topological relationship of different rock types. Different plain types do not exist independently, but connected with each others along stream networks. The model developed is able to combine the morphological characteristics of plains with the channel network to conceptualize characteristics and development pathways of plains in the Korean Peninsula.

This paper describes the development and measurement results of C-band planar active phase array antenna for detecting and tracking radar(weapon-locating radar). The antenna is designed with 14 sub-arrays(12 main channels and 2 sidelobe blanking channels and approximately 3,000 elements of transmit-receive channel) to generate transmit and digital receive patterns. Using a near-field measurements facility, G/N, transmit patterns, and received patterns are measured. Receive patterns are implemented with digital beamforming by signal processing. The measurement results demonstrate that antenna design specifications were fulfilled.
More recently, there have been significant changes in the forms of channels due to runoff characteristics driven by climate changes and other alterations in basin/channel environments. Particularly, increasing local deposition in major channels is being observed nationwide. Of such phenomena, it is noteworthy that flood-plains show unidirectional growth and lowering of channels within compound channels in the form of a high-flow plain. These changes are supposed to affect management of the river ecology as well as flood control. In this study, the research on channels in Korea confirmed that the phenomenon of local deposition in those channels is actually taking place, rendering a problem to be urgently addressed. Previous studies on bed changes have been focused on low channels based on bed materials distributed over the channels. However, this research has proved that surface-layer deposition of a high-flow plain is closely related with changes in the conditions of ground surfaces and, ultimately, affects the bed of the entire channel as well. According to the intensive research on the condition of the high-flow plain of the mouth of the Han River, the silt deposited in the high-flow plain was the main cause of settlement/growth of vegetation. And this leads to landforming along with woods-forming, disturbing flood control as well as the normal river ecology.
We developed a multicast communication packet radio protocol using a time-sharing tablet system ("wireless token ring") to achieve the efficient exchange of files among packet radio terminals attached to swans. This paper provides an overview of the system and the protocol of the packet communications. The packet device forming the main part of the transceiver developed is the Texas Instruments CC2500. This device consists of one call-up channel and one data transmission channel and could improve error frame correction using FEC (forward error correction) with 34.8 kbps MSK and receiving power of at least -64 dBm (output 1 dBm at distance of 200 m using 3 dBi antenna). A time-sharing framework was determined for the wireless token ring using call sign ordinals to prevent transmission right loss. Tests using eight stations showed that resend requests with the ARQ (automatic repeat request) system are more frequent for a receiving power supply of -62 dBm or less. A wireless token ring system with fixed transmission times is more effective. This communication protocol is useful in cases in which frequency resources are limited; the energy consumed is not dependent on the transmission environment (preset transmission times); multiple terminals are concentrated in a small area; and information (position data and vital data) is shared among terminals under circumstances in which direct communication between a terminal and the center is not possible. The method allows epidemiological predictions of avian influenza infection routes based on vital data and relationships among individual birds based on the network topology recorded by individual terminals. This communication protocol is also expected to have applications in the formation of multiple in vivo micromachines or terminals that are inserted into living organisms.

Polyimides and related polymers, when synthesized from aromatic monomers, have generally rigid chain structures resulting in a low gas permeability. The rigidity of polymer chains reduces the segmental motion of chains and works as a good barrier against gas transport. To overcome the limit of use as materials of gas separation membranes due to low gas permeability, block copolymers with the incorporation of flexible segments like siloxane linkage and ether linkage have been studied. These block copolymers have microphase-separated structures composed of microdomains of flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) or polyether segments and of rigid polyimides segments. In case of rigid-flexible block copolymers, the characteristics of both phases for gas permeation are of great difference. The permeation of gas molecules occurs favorably through microdomains of flexible segments, whereas those of rigid segments hinder the permeation of gas molecules. Accordingly the increase of content of flexible segments in a rigid polymer matrix will increase the gas permeability of the membrane linearly. However, this prediction does not satisfy enough many experimental results and in particular the drastic increase of the permeability is observed in a certain volume fraction. It was proposed that the gas transport mechanism is dominated by diffusion rather than gas solubility in a certain content of flexible phase if solution-diffusion mechanism is adopted. However, the transition from solubility-dependent to diffusion-dependent cannot be explained by the understanding of mechanism itself. Therefore, we consider an effective chemical path which permeable phase can form in a microheterogenous medium, and percolation concept is introduced to describe the permeability transition at near threshold where for the first time a percolation path occurs. The volume fraction of both phases is defined as V$_{\alpha}$ and V$_{\beta}$ in block copolymers, and the volume of $\beta$ phase in the threshold forming geometrically a traversing channel is defined as V$_{\betac}$. The formation mechanism of shortest chemical channel is schematically depicted in Fig. 1.

This paper proposed the method of finding optimal weight vectors for enhancing the performance of an adaptive array antenna system by adopting a novel beam-forming algorithm in CDMA (code division multiple access) channel. This algorithm is a liberalized power method, based on power method, with the total computational load, O(4N). Where, N denotes the number of antenna elements. The performance of the proposed algorithm is shown in terms of SER (symbol error rates), allowable capacity, and the convergence characteristic in IS2000 1X CDMA channel. As a result of simulations, the adaptive way antenna system allows 6-10 times more users than the conventional one in a cell of a base station. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm shows superior performance to the conventional one regarding symbol error rates, converging characteristics, and computational load.

An overview is given on the work of the Laboratory of Nuclear Energy Systems at ETH, Zurich (ETHZ) and of the Laboratory of Thermal Hydraulics at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland on tight-lattice bundles. Two-phase flow in subchannels of a tight triangular lattice was studied experimentally and by computational fluid dynamics simulations. Two adiabatic facilities were used: (1) a vertical channel modeling a pair of neighboring sub-channels; and (2) an arrangement of four subchannels with one subchannel in the center. The first geometry was equipped with two electrical film sensors placed on opposing rod surfaces forming the subchannel gap. They recorded 2D liquid film thickness distributions on a domain of $16{\times}64$ measuring points each, with a time resolution of 10 kHz. In the bubbly and slug flow regime, information on the bubble size, shape, and velocity and the residual liquid film thickness underneath the bubbles were obtained. The second channel was investigated using cold neutron tomography, which allowed the measurement of average liquid film profiles showing the effect of spacer grids with vanes. The results were reproduced by large eddy simulation + volume of fluid. In the outlook, a novel nonadiabatic subchannel experiment is introduced that can be driven to steady-state dryout. A refrigerant is heated by a heavy water circuit, which allows the application of cold neutron tomography.

The a-Si:H TFTs decreasing parasitic capacitance of source-drain is fabricated on glass. The structure of a-Si:H TFTs is inverted staggered. The gate electrode is formed by patterning with length of 8 ${\mu}m∼16 ${\mu}m. and width of 80∼200 ${\mu}m after depositing with gate electrode (Cr) 1500 under coming 7059 glass substrate. We have fabricated a-SiN:H, conductor, etch-stopper and photoresistor on gate electrode in sequence, respectively. The thickness of these thin films is formed with a-SiN:H (2000 ), a-Si:H(2000 ) and n+a-Si:H (500). We have deposited n+a-Si:H ,NPR(Negative Photo Resister) layer after forming pattern of Cr gate electrode by etch-stopper pattern. The NPR layer by inverting pattern of upper gate electrode is patterned and the n+a-Si:H layer is etched by the NPR pattern. The NPR layer is removed. After Cr layer is deposited and patterned, the source-drain electrode is formed. The a-Si:H TFTs decreasing parasitic capacitance of source-drain has channel length of 8 ~20 ${\mu}m and channel width of 80∼200 ${\mu}m. And it shows drain current of 8 ${\mu}A at 20 gate voltages, Ion/Ioff ratio of 108 and Vth of 4 volts.

In the recent years, due to long-lasting heavy rainfall events, a large number of landslides have been observed in the mountainous area of the world. Such landslides can also form a dam as it blocks the course of a river, which may burst and cause a catastrophic flood. Numerical analysis of landslide dam formation is rarely available, while laboratory experimental studies often use assumed shape to analyze the landslide dam failure and flood hydraulics in downstream. In this study, both experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to investigate the formation of landslide dam. Two case laboratory experiments were conducted in two flumes simultaneously. The first flume (2.0 m 0.6 m 0.5 m) was set at $22^{\circ}$ and $27^{\circ}$ slope to generate the landslide using rainfall intensity of 70.0 mm/hr. On the other hand, the second flume (1.5 m 0.25 m 0.3 m) was set perpendicularly at the downstream end of the first flume to receive the landslide mass forming landslide dam. The formation of landslide dam was observed at $15^{\circ}$ slope of the second flume. The whole processes including the landslide initiation and movement of the landslide mass into the second channel was captured by three digital cameras. In numerical analysis, a two-dimensional (2D) seepage flow model, a 2D slope stability model (Spencer method) and a 2D landslide dam-geometry evaluation model were coupled as a single unit. This developed model can determine the landslide occurrence time, the failure mass and the geometry of landslide dam deposited in the second channel. The data obtained from numerical simulation results has good agreement with the experimental measurements.
