  • Active noise control is an approach to noise reduction in which a secondary noise source that destructively interferes with the unwanted noise. In general, active noise control systems rely on multiple sensors to measure the unwanted noise field and the effect of the cancellation. This paper develops an approach that utilizes a single sensor. The noise field is modeled as a stochastic process, and a time-adaptive algorithm is used to adaptively estimate the parameters of the process. Based on these parameter estimates, a canceling signal is generated. Opppenheim model assumed that transfer function characteristics from the canceling source to the error sensor is only propagation delay. But this paper proposes a modified Oppenheim model by considering transfer characteristics of acoustic device and noise path. This transfer characteristics is adaptively cancelled by adaptive model. This is proved by computer simulation with artifically generated random noise and sine wave noise. The details of the proposed architecture, and theoretical simulation and experimental results of the noise cancellation system for three dimension enclosure are presented in the paper.

  • During a signal is being transmitted, an interference signal can be introduced through an unknown channel. In these cases, an adaptive system, so called adaptive noise canceller, can restore the original signal from the corrupted signal by first identifying the unknown interference channel on the minimum mean square error criteron, and then by cancelling the interference signal using the identified interference channel. Whereas this method is quite effective when the a priori knowledges about the characteristics of the interference signal and of the intrference channel are unknown or time-varyng, but has a drawback that the presence of the original signal has a severe effect on the optimum value of the interference channel to be identified on the miniumum mean square eror criterion In this paper an adaptive noise canceller and its algorithms are introduced that can restore the original signal more accurately especially when the correlatedness between the original signal and the interference signal is small.

  • In order to use limited frequency resources efficiently, a single frequency network using digital on-channel repeater(DOCR) has been studied and would be implemented. The DOCR generates strong pre-ghosts to ATSC DTV receivers. The forward filter of equalizer in ATSC DTV receivers compensates the distortion made by pre-ghosts. This process induces noise enhancement and colored noise, thereby results in the performance degradation. In this paper we propose to use a dual-feedback equalizer to combat strong pre-ghosts. The proposed equalizer has two feedback filters. One is the decision feedback filter and the other is non-decision feedback filter. The additional non-decision feedback filter decreases the noise by whitening the noise and preventing the generation of colored noise in pre-ghost channel. Thus the equalization technique of dual-feedback structure has performance enhancement in pre-ghost channel in comparison with conventional decision feedback equalizer(DFE). By simulation we analyzed the performance enhancements of DTV receiver using dual-feedback equalization structure.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that can be applied to the efficient implementation of multi-channel active noise controller. Since the normalized MFxLMS (Modified Filtered-x Least Mean Square) algorithm for the multi-channel active noise control requires a large amount of computation, the difficulty has lied in implementing the algorithm using a low-cost MCU (Microcontoller Unit). We implement the multi-channel active noise controller efficiently by optimizing the software based on the features of the MCU. By maximizing the usage of single-cycle MAC (Multiply- Accumulate) operations and minimizing move operations of the delay memory, we can achieve more than 3 times the performance in the aspect of computational optimization, and by parellel processing using the auxillary processor included in the MCU, we can also obtain more than 4 times the performance. In addition, the usage of additional parts can be minimized by maximizing the usage of the peripherals embedded in the MCU.

  • An error probability analysis is performed far a hybrid DS/SFH spread-spectrum system using minimum shift keying(MSK) modulation. The channel is assumed to be a Rayleigh fading channel with partial-band noise interference. Expressions are derived for the bit error rate(BER) in the context of Rician and Rayleigh fading channels, as a function of the average signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) $E_b/N_0$, the average signal-to- interference ratio(SJR) $E_b/N_J$, and channel parameters. As a result, in the fading channel with large Rician factor, K, which denotes the ratio of power of the direct and the diffused components, the partial-band interference is the worst case. On the other hand, in Rayleigh fading channel(K=0), the full-band interference($\rho$=1) brings the system to the worst case. Performance comparisons among various channels show that the factor K has much large effect on overall performance. For example, in conditions of $\rho$=0.1 and BER=$10^-2$, the system in Rician channel with K=10 requires more 1.9 dB SNR than that in AWGN channel, whereas it is less 5 dB SNR than that in the Rayleigh channel with K=0.

  • Noise subtraction using reference channel data has been used to improve signal-to-noise ratio in magnetoencephalography. In this paper, an adaptive noise subtraction model is proposed and parameters for the model are optimized. A criterion to determine an optimal update period for the filter coefficients is proposed based on the ratio of peak amplitude of evoked field (N100m) divided by the output standard deviation. Experiments are carried out using a 40 channel MEG system. From the experiments, the proposed noise subtraction method shows superior performances over existing non-adaptive methods. Two-dimensional topographic map is shown for a diagnosis with a cubic spline interpolation.

  • In this paper, we compare the performance of channel estimators with the L$_{1}$-norm and L$_{2}$-norm criteria in impulaive noise environment, and show than the L$_{1}$-norm criterion is appropriate for that situation. Also, it is shown that the performance of the conventional maximum likelihood sequence detector(MLSD) can be improved by applying the same principle to mobile channels. That is, the performance of the conventional MLSD, which is known to be optimal under the Gaussian noise assumption, degrades in the impulsive noise of radio mobile communication channels. So, we proposed the MLSD which can reduce the effect of impulsive noise effectively by applying the results of channel estimators. Finally, it is confirmed by computer simulation that the performance of MLSD is significantly affected depending on the types of branch metrics, and that, in the impulsive noise environments, the proposed one with new branch metrics performs better thatn the conventional branch metric, l y(k)-s(k) l$^{[-992]}$ .

  • In this paper, we model the interference plus noise signal for terrestrial cloud transmission systems and present bit error rate (BER) performances. Since terrestrial cloud transmission systems experience co-channel interference from one or more transmitters, they have to operate under a negative signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) region. The interference plus noise signal can be modeled as Gaussian random variable under the required SINR region and we observe the BER performance of the cloud transmission system using the derived model. Also, we propose an improved channel estimation scheme by averaging the channel estimates based on least square based interpolation scheme. Simulation results show that the cloud transmission system can operate under negative SINR region using the proposed channel estimation scheme.
