  • This paper presents a simultaneous solution algorithm for one-dimensional unsteady flow routing through a dendritic channel system. This simulations solution algorithm is based on the double-sweep method and utilizes separate recursion equations for continuity, momentum and energy equations for each of the individual components of a dendritic channel system. Through separate recursion equations for each of the components. the new algorithm converts a dendritic channel network problem into a single-channel problem. The new algorithm is utilized in conjunction with a linearized unsteady flow model using full dynamic flow equations. The required computer storage for the coefficient matrix of the whole system is reduced significantly from the $2N{\times}2N$ matrix to a $2N{\times}4$ matrix, where N is the number of cross sections used in the computation of flow variables in a dendritic channel system. The algorithm presented in this paper provides an efficient and accurate modeling of unsteady flow events through a dendritic channel system.

  • Research on flow channel designs of the separate plates is necessary to improve the PEMFC performance. On concerning the performance improvement of PEMFC, many recent studies have been made on the interdigitated flow channel using forced convection. In this paper, the interdigitated flow channel is similarly applied on the parallel flow channel with a baffle or baffles. Numerical analysis is performed by using a commercial multiphysics program, which is called COMSOL, on the parallel channel with the fully blocked baffle(FBB) and there are three variables, the position of baffle, flow direction and flow velocity. Each power of the variables is resulted from the fixed 0.5V, the voltage from 80 percents of the maximum power. Finally, based on the full factorial designs(FFD), one of the design of experiments(DOE), each factor which has several levels lead to the conclusion. The analysis of the main effects and interactions of the factors is useful to find the most influenced factor to improve the power.

  • The operating temperature of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) usually has to be limited under $100^{\circ}C$ to maintain the proper ionic conductivity. Therefore, the only product from reaction, water, is in the liquid phase. Two-phase flow makes the flow phenomenon in the channel difficult to understand and predict. Water blocking in the PEMFC channel or the pore of Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), called flooding, is known as the main effect of PEMFC degradation. To analyze two-phase flow, the PEMFC with transparent acrylic plate was used. Two-phase flow patterns were observed by varying the current density. When the PEMFC is mounted horizontally, water in the cathode is mainly transported on the interface between the channel and GDL.

  • In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted to investigate the flow pattern and to find the occurrence of dead zones in an existing capacitive deionization (CDI) cell. Newly designed cells-specifically designed to avoid dead zones-were analyzed by CFD in accordance with the flow rates of 15, 25 and 35 ml/min. Next, the separation performances between the existing and newly designed cell were compared by conducting CDI experiments in terms of salt removal efficiency at the same flow rates. Then, the computational and experimental results were compared to each other. The salt removal efficiencies of the hexagon flow channel 1 (HFC1) and hexagon flow channel 2 (HFC2) were increased 88-124% at 15 ml/min and 49-50% at 25 ml/min, respectively. There was no difference between the existing cell and the foursquare flow cell (FFC) at 35 ml/min.

  • The objective of this paper is to present a modified fractional step method of keeping a constant mass flow rate in spatially periodic flows, because original fractional step methods do not precisely keep the mass flow rate constant in time. In the modified method, the mean and fluctuating pseudo-pressure gradients are separately obtained at each time step. This method is successfully applied to channel and pipe flows and shown to be suitable for maintaining a constant mass flow rate in time.

  • This paper deals with the evaluation of several boundary conditions which are commonly used in the lattice Boltzmann equation method. 2-D channel flow(Poiseuille flow) and lid-driven cavity flow was selected as a test problem of this study, because there exist an analytic solution and previous study which could be used for a benchmarking test. It was found that lattice Boltzmann method still needs more considerations of stability and physical consistency, though it could predict the flow patterns both qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • A 2D-LDV system was employed to investigate the flow field characteristics in fully developed drag reducing turbulent channel flows. The additive used in this study was Habon-G which showed splendid drag reduction effect and minimum mechanical degradation trend in the closed flow circulation loop. In order to have better understanding of the drag reduction mechanism, the instantaneous velocities were carefully measured under various experimental conditions and the flow characteristics including time-averaged velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stresses were carefully assessed. The time-averaged velocity profiles of surfactant flows showed more parabolic shape(typically shown in a laminar flow) together with significant suppression of turbulent production, yielding the shear induced micelle structure orienting in the flow direction due to its isotropic characteristics. Especially it was observed that the maximum intensity for drag reducing flows was shifted away from the wall and that the streamwise and normal turbulent intensities were strongly altered. This phenomenon strongly suggests that the viscous sublayer becomes thicker with addition of surfactant. Turbulent momentum transport was drastically suppressed across the whole drag reducing channel flow.

  • The present study investigated the effects of channel rotation and bleed flow on heat/mass transfer in a square channel with $45^{\circ}$ rib turbulators. The bleed holes were located between the rib turbulators on the leading surface and those on the trailing surface case by case. The tests were conducted under the conditions of various bleed ratios (0.0, 0.2, 0.4) and rotation numbers (0.0, 0.2, 0.4) at Re=10,000. The results suggested that heat/mass transfer characteristics were influenced by the Coriolis force, decrement of main flow rate, secondary flow by angled ribs and bleed hole location. As the bleed ratio (BR) increased, the heat/mass transfer decreased on both surfaces due to the reduction of main flow rate. With increment of the rotation number, heat/mass transfer also decreased and almost the same because the reattachment of the secondary flow induced by angled ribs was weakened on the leading surface and the secondary flow was disturbed on the trailing surface by the Coriolis force.

  • Flow field-flow fractionation (FlFFF) is a technology to separate the molecules by size in an open channel. Molecules with different size have different diffusivities and are located vertically in different positions when passing through an open channel. In this study, hollow fiber membranes instead of conventional rectangular channels have been used as materials for the open channel and this change would decrease the cost of manufacturing. FlFFF is a useful technique to characterize the biopolymeric materials. Retention time, diffusion coefficients and Stokes radius of analysis can be calculated from the related simple equations. Hollow-fiber flow field-flow fractionation (HF-FlFFF) has been used for the characterization and separation of protein mixture in a phosphate buffer solution and has demonstrated the potential to be developed into a disposable FlFFF channel. The important indexes for the analytical separation are selectivity, resolution and plate height. The optimized separation condition for protein mixture of Ovalbumin, Alcohol dehydrogenase, Apoferritin and Thyroglobulin is ${\dot V}_{out}/{\dot V}_{rad}=0.65/0.85\;mL/min$.

  • Under limited transmission conditions, many factors affect the efficiency of video transmission. During the flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), frequent network switching often occurs, and the channel transmission condition changes rapidly, resulting in low-video transmission efficiency. This paper presents an efficient video coding flow for UAVs working in the 5G nonstandalone network and proposes two bit controllers, including time and spatial bit controllers, in the flow. When the environment fluctuates significantly, the time bit controller adjusts the depth of the recursive codec to reduce the error propagation caused by excessive network inference. The spatial bit controller combines the spatial bit mask with the channel quality multiplier to adjust the bit allocation in space to allocate resources better and improve the efficiency of information carrying. In the spatial bit controller, a flexible mini graph is proposed to compute the channel quality multiplier. In this study, two bit controllers with end-to-end codec were combined, thereby constructing an efficient video coding flow. Many experiments have been performed in various environments. Concerning the multi-scale structural similarity index and peak signal-to-noise ratio, the performance of the coding flow is close to that of H.265 in the low bits per pixel area. With an increase in bits per pixel, the saturation bottleneck of the coding flow is at the same level as that of H.264.
