Moving force identification from bridge dynamic responses

  • A big progress has been made for moving force identification from bridge dynamic responses in recent years. Current knowledge and the potentials on moving force identification methods are reviewed in this paper under main headings below: background of moving force identification, experimental verification in laboratory and its application in field.

Seasonal Variations in Nutrients and Chlorophyll-a Concentrations in the Northern East China Sea

  • Nutrients, chlorophyll-a, particulate organic carbon (POC), and environmental conditions were extensively investigated in the northern East China Sea (ECS) near Cheju Island during three seasonal cruises from 2003 to 2005. In spring and autumn, relatively high concentrations of nitrate ($2.6{\sim}12.4\;{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) and phosphate ($0.17{\sim}0.61\;{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) were observed in the surface waters in the western part of the study area because of the large supply of nutrients from deep waters by vertical mixing. The surface concentrations of nitrate and phosphate in summer were much lower than those in spring and autumn, which is ascribed to a reduced nutrient supply from the deep waters in summer because of surface layer stratification. While previous studies indicate that upwellings of the Kuroshio Current and the Changjiang (Yangtze River) are main sources of nutrients in the ECS, these two inputs seem not to have contributed significantly to the build-up of nutrients in the northern ECS during the time of this study. The lower nitrate:phosphate (N:P) ratio in the surface waters and the positive correlation between the surface N:P ratio and nitrate concentration indicate that nitrate acts as a main nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth in the northern ECS, contrary to previous reports of phosphate-limited phytoplankton growth in the ECS. This difference arises because most surface water nutrients are supplied by vertical mixing from deep waters with low N:P ratios and are not directly influenced by the Changjiang, which has a high N:P ratio. Surface chlorophyll-a levels showed large seasonal variation, with high concentrations ($0.38{\sim}4.14\;mg\;m^{-3}$) in spring and autumn and low concentrations ($0.22{\sim}1.05\;mg\;m^{-3}$) in summer. The surface distribution of chlorophyll-a coincided fairly well with that of nitrate in the northern ECS, implying that nitrate is an important nutrient controlling phytoplankton biomass. The POC:chlorophyll-a ratio was $4{\sim}6$ times higher in summer than in spring and autumn, presumably because of the high summer phytoplankton death rate caused by nutrient depletion in the surface waters.

Numerical simulation of Hydrodynamics and water properties in the Yellow Sea. I. Climatological inter-annual variability

  • The Yellow Sea is characterized by relatively shallow water depth, varying range of tidal action and very complex coastal geometry such as islands, bays, peninsulas, tidal flats, shoals etc. The dynamic system is controlled by tides, regional winds, river discharge, and interaction with the Kuroshio. The circulation, water mass properties and their variability in the Yellow Sea are very complicated and still far from clear understanding. In this study, an effort to improve our understanding the dynamic feature of the Yellow Sea system was conducted using numerical simulation with the ROMS model, applying climatologic forcing such as winds, heat flux and fresh water precipitation. The inter-annual variability of general circulation and thermohaline structure throughout the year has been obtained, which has been compared with observational data sets. The simulated horizontal distribution and vertical cross-sectional structures of temperature and salinity show a good agreement with the observational data indicating significantly the water masses such as Yellow Sea Warm Water, Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, Changjiang River Diluted Water and other sporadically observed coastal waters around the Yellow Sea. The tidal effects on circulation and dynamic features such as coastal tidal fronts and coastal mixing are predominant in the Yellow Sea. Hence the tidal effects on those dynamic features are dealt in the accompanying paper (Kim et at., 2004). The ROMS model adopts curvilinear grid with horizontal resolution of 35 km and 20 vertical grid spacing confirming to relatively realistic bottom topography. The model was initialized with the LEVITUS climatologic data and forced by the monthly mean air-sea fluxes of momentum, heat and fresh water derived from COADS. On the open boundaries, climatological temperature and salinity are nudged every 20 days for data assimilation to stabilize the modeling implementation. This study demonstrates a Yellow Sea version of Atlantic Basin experiment conducted by Haidvogel et al. (2000) experiment that the ROMS simulates the dynamic variability of temperature, salinity, and velocity fields in the ocean. However the present study has been improved to deal with the large river system, open boundary nudging process and further with combination of the tidal forcing that is a significant feature in the Yellow Sea.

黃海水 와 循環에 관한 考察 (A Note on Water Masses and General Circulation in the Yellow Sea (Hwanghae))

  • 黃海에서 水塊와 循環에 대해 간략히 檢討, 討議하였다. 水塊는 黃海冷水, 黃海溫流水, 沿岸水, 陽子江 稀釋수 네가지로 分類된다. 黃海冷水는 長技 海洋觀測資料와 최근 CTD로 資料부터 32.0~33.0%의 鹽分, 1$0^{\circ}C$이하의 水溫을 갖고 있는 것으로 定義할 수 있다. 海水循環은 南部海域에서 年中 反時計方向의 海水循環이 存在한다. 겨울철에는 中國沿岸을 따라 南向하는 沿岸流流가 北風, 北西風으로 인해 强하게 나타나며 濟州道 西部 海域에 강한 水溫.鹽分前線이 잘 보여주듯 黃海暖流는 弱해진다. 반면에 여름철에는 陽子江 釋수가 濟州道 쪽을 향해 北東쪽으로 擴張하며 中國 沿岸流가 상당히 減少하게 된다. 지금 까지 여름철 東南黃海에서 北向流를 黃海暖流로 分類하였으나 류의 延長이 아니라 沿岸水와 黃海冷水사이 境界面을 따라 形成되는 密度流로 보는 것이 더욱 妥當하다.

A Genetic Analysis of Taoyuan Pig and Its Phylogenetic Relationship to Eurasian Pig Breeds

  • Taoyuan pig is a native Taiwan breed. According to the historical record, the breed was first introduced to Taiwan from Guangdong province, Southern China, around 1877. The breed played an important role in Taiwan's early swine industry. It was classified as an indigenous breed in 1986. After 1987, a conserved population of Taoyuan pig was collected and reared in isolation. In this study, mitochondrial DNA sequences and 18 microsatellite markers were used to investigate maternal lineage and genetic diversity within the Taoyuan pig population. Population differentiation among Taoyuan, Asian type, and European type pig breeds was also evaluated using differentiation indices. Only one D-loop haplotype of the Taoyuan pig was found. It clustered with Lower Changjiang River Basin and Central China Type pig breeds. Based on the polymorphism of microsatellite markers, a positive fixation index value ($F_{IS}$) indicates that the conserved Taoyuan population suffers from inbreeding. In addition, high $F_{ST}$ values (>0.2105) were obtained, revealing high differentiation among these breeds. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling showed a clear geometric structure among 7 breeds. Together these results indicate that maternally Taoyuan pig originated in the Lower Changjiang River Basin and Central China; however, since being introduced to Taiwan differentiation has occurred. In addition, Taoyuan pig has lost genetic diversity in both its mitochondrial and nuclear genomes.

  • This study examined extensive patches of floating green macroalgal (Ulva prolifera) mats in the northern East China Sea (ECS) using satellite images from mid May through July 2008 and field observation made during early August 2008 cruise. It was previously reported that the massive macroalgal blooms occurred in the coastal areas of Qingdao in China. During our field survey, researchers noticed widely distributed floating patches of macroalgal mats ranging in size from tens of centimeters to a few hundred meters in diameter. Meteorological data in the northern ECS showed high irradiance, high air-temperature, and predominant southerly winds in summer. In the study area during the survey period, surface waters were characterized by the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) mass, which contained high concentrations of nitrate and phosphate. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence of U. prolifera found in the northern ECS was the same as those of U. prolifera sampled from Qingdao blooms, suggesting a possibility that U. prolifera found in two regions would be derived from the same origin. We suggest that U. prolifera in the nearshore Jiangsu Province drifted into the northern ECS and proliferated under favorable meteorological and oceanographic conditions during the summer of 2008.

Aquarius 염분 관측 위성에 의한 동해에서의 표층 염분 보정 (Correction of Aquarius Sea Surface Salinity in the East Sea)

  • Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) observations from the Aquarius satellite in the East Sea show large systematic biases mainly caused by the surrounding lands and Radio Frequency Interferences (RFI) along the descending orbits on which the satellite travels from the Asian continent to the East Sea. To develop a technique for correcting the systematic biases unique to the East Sea, the least square regression between in situ observations of salinity and the reanalyzed salinities by HYCOM is first performed. Then monthly mean reanalyzed salinities fitted to the in situ salinities are compared with monthly mean Aquarius salinities to calculate mean biases in $1^{\circ}{\times}1^{\circ}$ boxes. Mean biases in winter (December-March) are found to be considerably larger than those in other seasons possibly caused by the inadequate correction of surface roughness in the sea surrounded by the land, and thus the mean bias corrections are performed using two bias tables. Large negative biases are found in the area near the coast of Japan and in the areas with islands. In the northern East Sea, data sets using the ascending orbit only (SCIA) are chosen for correction because of large RFI errors on the descending orbit (SCID). Resulting mean biases between the reanalysis salinities fitted to in situ observations and the bias corrected Aquarius salinities are less than 0.2 psu in all areas. The corrected mean salinity distributions in March and September demonstrate marked improvements when compared with mean salinities from the World Ocean Atlas (WOA [2005-2012]). In September, salinity distributions based on the corrected Aquarius and on the WOA (2005-2012) show similar distributions of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) in the East Sea.

한국 남해 제주도 연안 퇴적물의 지화학적 특성: 퇴적물의 근원지 (Geochemical Compositions of Coastal Sediments around Jeju Island, South Sea of Korea: Potential Provenance of Sediment)

  • 황해 남동해역의 제주도 연안에 분포하고 있는 퇴적물의 근원지를 조사하기 위해 표층 퇴적물의 입자조직, 지화학 성분 그리고 점토광물 분석이 이루어졌다. 본 연구에서 Ti/AI, Nb/Al 그리고 Rb/Al 비 등을 포함한 특징적인 원소성분도(geochemical discrimination diagram)와 희토류 원소들의 함량 특성은 퇴적물의 근원지를 판단하는데 매우 유용한 지시자들로 제시된다. 이들 결과에 의하면, 연구해역의 세립질 퇴적물은 대부분 증국의 양자강으로부터 기원 ${\cdot}$ 운반 퇴적되었으며, 조질질 퇴적물은 주변 화산암의 풍화 잔류물인 것으로 해석된다. 창해와 동중국해에서 치근 조사된 해수의 순환 패턴과 물리-화학적 특성은 양자강으로부터 기원된 세립 퇴적물이 연구해역을 포함한 한반도 남해(황해 남동해역) 연안역까지 운반 퇴적될 수 있음을 보여준다.

Experimental and numerical investigation on bearing mechanism and capacity of new concrete plug structures

  • The stability and safety of concrete plug structure of diversion tunnel is crucial for the impoundment of upstream reservoir in hydropower projects. The ongoing Wudongde hydropower plant in China plans to adopt straight column plugs and curved column plugs to replace the traditional expanded wedge-shaped plugs. The performance of the proposed new plug structures under high water head is then a critical issue and attracts the attentions of engineers. This paper firstly studied the joint bearing mechanism of plug and surrounding rock mass and found that the quality and mechanical properties of the interfaces among plug concrete, shotcrete, and surrounding rock mass play a key role in the performance of plug structures. By performing geophysical and mechanical experiments, the contact state and the mechanical parameters of the interfaces were analyzed in detail and provide numerical analysis with rational input parameters. The safety evaluation is carried out through numerical calculation of plug stability under both construction and operation period. The results indicate that the allowable water head acting on columnar plugs is 3.1 to 7.4 times of the designed water head. So the stability of the new plug structure meets the design code requirement. Based on above findings, it is concluded that for the studied project, it is feasible to adopt columnar plugs to replace the traditional expanded wedge-shaped plugs. It is hoped that this study can provide reference for other projects with similar engineering background and problems.

하계 동중국해에서의 용존 및 입자유기탄소의 분포 특성 (Distribution of Dissolved and Particulate Organic Carbon in the East China Sea in Summer)

  • 2003년 8월과 2004년 9월 제주도 남서부해역과 중국 연안해역을 대상으로 실시된 본 연구는 용존무기영양염류와 용존 및 입자유기탄소의 분포 특성을 조사하였다. 하계에 동중국해의 영양염의 분포 형태는 수괴 및 식물플랑크톤의 영향을 받은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 하계에 동중국해내 수괴들은 중국의 연안해역을 제외하고 상하수직혼합이 잘 일어나지 않아 표층수에는 영양염의 유입이 감소하고, 저층수에는 표층에서 유입되는 유기물이 분해되어 영양염의 축적이 일어나 높은 농도를 나타내고 있었다. Chlorophyll a의 농도가 높은 해역에서 영양염의 농도가 낮은 값을 보였으며, Chlorophyll a의 농도가 감소하는 수심이하에서 영양염의 농도가 증가함을 보여 높은 생물활동에 의한 무기영양염류 등이 조절되고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 연구해역내 용존유기탄소의 분포는 염분이나 수온에 대해 다소 산만한 분포를 보여 수괴에 따른 상관관계가 없는 것으로 조사되었고, 양자강 영향 정점에서 $100{\mu}M$이상의 높은 값을 보인 반면, 제주도 남서부 해역에서는 낮은 농도를 보였는데, 이것은 양자강 유출수가 동중국해 용존유기탄소의 공급원으로 작용하고 있는 것으로 사료된다. 연구해역 입자유기탄소의 분포특성은 양자강 유출수가 영향을 미치는 중국연안해역에서 평균 $9.23{\mu}M$로 가장 높은 농도를 보였으며, 대마난류수의 영향을 받는 제주도 남동부해역에서 $3.04{\mu}M$로 낮은 농도를 보였으며, 중앙부해역에서 $7.23{\mu}M$의 입자유기탄소량을 나타내, 양자강 유출수가 자생적 기원이외의 입자유기탄소 공급원으로 작용하고 있는 것으로 사료된다. 제주도 남서부해역에서의 입자유기탄소는 Chlorophyll a의 농도와 높은 상관성을 보여 자생적 기원으로 볼 수 있지만 그 해역에서의 염분도가 저염(30%o 이하)을 나타내고 있어 자생적 기원보다는 육상기원에 의한 영향으로 생각되어진다.
