  • Based on Zernike polynomial fitting, we propose an algorithm believed to be new for interferometric measurements of rotationally asymmetric surface deviation of optics. This method tests and calculates each angular surface by choosing specified rotation angles with lowest error. The entire figure can be obtained by superimposing these sub-surfaces. Simulation and experiment studies for verifying the proposed algorithm are presented. The results show that the accuracy of the proposed method is higher than single-rotation algorithm and almost comparable to the rotation-averaging algorithm with fewer rotation measurements. The new algorithm can achieve a balance between the efficiency and accuracy.

  • Active optics is a key technology for future large-aperture space telescopes. In the design of deformable mirrors for space applications, the design parameter trade-off between the number of regularly configured actuators and the correction capability is essential but rarely analyzed, due to the lack of design legacy. This paper presents a parametric module method for integrated modeling of deformable mirrors with regularly configured actuators. A full design parameter space is explored to evaluate the correction capability and the mass of deformable mirrors, using an autoconstructed finite-element parametric modeling method that utilizes manual finite-element meshing for complex structures. These results are used to provide design guidelines for deformable mirrors. The integrated modeling method presented here can be used for future applied optics projects.

  • Laser cleaning has the advantages of environmental protection, precision, and high efficiency, and has good prospects for application in removing oxide films on the surface of aluminum alloy. This paper discusses the cleaning threshold and cleaning mechanism of aluminum alloy surface oxide film. A nanosecond pulsed laser was used to remove a 5-㎛-thick oxide film from the surface of 7A04 aluminum alloy, and the target surface temperature and cleaning depth were simulated. The effects of different laser energy densities on the surface morphology of the aluminum alloy were analyzed, and the plasma motion process was recorded using a high-speed camera. The temperature measurement results of the experiment are close to the simulation results. The results show that the laser cleaning of aluminum alloy oxide film is mainly based on the vaporization mechanism and the shock wave generated by the explosion.

  • The dynamic modulation transfer function (MTF) for image degradation caused by sinusoidal vibration is formulated based on a Bessel function of the first kind. The presented method makes it possible to obtain an analytical MTF expression derived for arbitrary frequency sinusoidal vibration. The error obtained by the use of finite order sum approximations instead of infinite sums is investigated in detail. Dynamic MTF exhibits a stronger random behavior for low frequency vibration than high frequency vibration. The calculated MTFs agree well with the measured MTFs with the slant edge method in imaging experiments. With the proposed formula, allowable amplitudes of any frequency vibration are easily calculated. This is practical for the analysis and design of the line-of-sight stabilization system in the remote sensing camera.

  • To overcome the capture-range problem in phase-diversity phase retrieval (PDPR), a geometrical-optics initial-estimate method is proposed to avoid a local minimum and to improve the accuracy of laser-wavefront measurement. We calculate the low-order aberrations through the geometrical-optics model, which is based on the two spot images in the propagation path of the laser, and provide it as a starting guess for the PDPR algorithm. Simulations show that this improves the accuracy of wavefront recovery by 62.17% compared to other initial values, and the iteration time with our method is reduced by 28.96%. That is, this approach can solve the capture-range problem.

  • The cell membrane provides critical cellular functions that rely on its elaborate structure and organization. The structure of turtle membranes is an important part of an ongoing study of erythrocyte membranes. Using a combination of atomic force microscopy and single-molecule force spectroscopy, we characterized the turtle erythrocyte membrane structure with molecular resolution in a quasi-native state. High-resolution images both leaflets of turtle erythrocyte membranes revealed a smooth outer membrane leaflet and a protein covered inner membrane leaflet. This asymmetry was verified by single-molecule force spectroscopy, which detects numerous exposed amino groups of membrane proteins in the inner membrane leaflet but much fewer in the outer leaflet. The asymmetric membrane structure of turtle erythrocytes is consistent with the semi-mosaic model of human, chicken and fish erythrocyte membrane structure, making the semi-mosaic model more widely applicable. From the perspective of biological evolution, this result may support the universality of the semi-mosaic model.

  • LED arrays with pixel numbers of $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, and $5{\times}5$ have been studied in this paper in order to enhance the optical output power and decrease heat dissipation of an AlGaInP-based light emitting diode display device (pixel size of $280{\times}280{\mu}m$) fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems. Simulation results showed that the thermal resistances of the $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, $5{\times}5$ arrays were $52^{\circ}C/W$, $69.7^{\circ}C/W$, and $84.3^{\circ}C/W$. The junction temperature was calculated by the peak wavelength shift method, which showed that the maximum value appears at the center pixel due to thermal crosstalk from neighboring pixels. The central temperature would be minimized with $40{\mu}m$ pixel pitch and $150{\mu}m$ substrate thickness as calculated by thermal modeling using finite element analysis. The modeling can be used to optimize parameters of highly integrated AlGaInP-based LED arrays fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems technology.

  • Background: This article aims to compare and analyze the contents of ginsenosides in ginseng of different plant ages from different localities in China. Methods: In this study, 77 fresh ginseng samples aged 2-4 years were collected from 13 different cultivation regions in China. The content of eight ginsenosides (Rg3, Rc, Rg1, Rf, Rb2, Rb1, Re, and Rd) was determined using rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (RRLC-Q-TOF MS/MS) to comparatively evaluate the influences of cultivation region and age. Results: Ginsenoside contents differed significantly depending on age and cultivation region. The contents of ginsenosides Re, Rc, Rg1, Rg3, and Rf increased with cultivation age, whereas that of ginsenoside Rb1 peaked in the third year of cultivation. Moreover, the highest ginsenoside content was obtained from Changbai (19.36 mg/g) whereas the lowest content was obtained from Jidong (12.05 mg/g). Ginseng from Jilin Province contained greater total ginsenosides and was richer in ginsenoside Re than ginseng of the same age group in Heilongjiang and Liaoning provinces, where Rb1 and Rg1 contents were relatively high. Conclusion: In this study, RRLC-Q-TOF MS/MS was used to analyze ginsenoside contents in 77 ginseng samples aged 2-4 years from different cultivation regions. These patterns of variation in ginsenoside content, which depend on harvesting location and age, could be useful for interested parties to choose ginseng products according to their needs.
