Purpose: The purpose of this study was to predict the risk factors for vascular complications among patients with type 2 diabetes. Method: The data were collected from August to September, 2007 using clinical examination and questionnaires. Patients (N=101) were recruited from the endocrinology department of P University hospital in D city. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The cardiovascular risk of patients with diabetes was significantly related to self care behavior, family history, and smoking status. The risk of peripheral vascular complications was not related to predictors included in the study. With multivariate analyses, significant predictors of cardiovascular risk for these patients were self care behavior, family history, and smoking status ($R^2=.40$, p<.0001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that smoking cessation and improving self-care behavior are essential to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications among patients with diabetes. To enhance self-care practices for the patients with diabetes, nursing interventions, such as telephone counseling, problem focused nursing counseling, and peer group activities should be considered.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the utilization of the Transtheoretical Model(TTM) for Korean nursing studies on health behaviors and identify the strategies for improvement of further studies. Methods: From a main and seven branch journals on the Korean Society of Nursing Science, a total of 26 studies, which had been conducted based upon the TTM, were selected. The selected studies were analyzed from the September of 2006 to the February of 2007 by the criteria; name of journal, year of publication, health behavior, population, sampling, sample size, research design, instrument (translation process, reliability and validity), and statistical analysis. Results: TTM on the Korean nursing studies was mainly applied for smoking cessation or exercise with elderly or middle aged women. The research findings could not be generalized with the limitation of the use of non representative samples. The most frequently used research design was a cross-sectional survey. Some studies had a lack of reliable and valid instruments, so that the internal validity of the study findings may be threatened. Statistically related problems increased type I error and decreased power. Conclusion: Korean nursing studies based on TTM can be the beginning stage in quality and quantity.
Objectives: The purpose of this manuscript was to review Intersectoral Collaboration policies for Tobacco Control. Methods: The author selected the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and adopted guidelines, and reviewed intersectoral and multisectoral collaboration policy recommendations. Results: There are 11 chapters and 38 articles in the Convention. In the Demand reduction policies included price and non price measures. The author selected a few non price measures for cross sectoral collaboration examples. They are protection from exposure to tobacco emission, education and communication, banning advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products, and offering treatment to tobacco use cessation. Inter sectoral and multi sectoral approaches could increase effectiveness, and better outcome of the tobacco control policy for implementation of many different articles of FCTC. Conclusions: It is important to give a specific role in structures of different government sectors and infrastructure for intersectoral collaboration. In addition, the role of civil society is very important for implementation of tobacco control policy effectively, and governments have to support the civil society for anti-smoking activities and campaigns.
Purpose: To evaluate the drainage effect of silk suture following aspiration of the bursa as an early treatment of chronic lateral malleolar bursitis. Materials and Methods: Thirteen cases, which have over two weeks of history and over one year of follow-up, were investigated. The average duration of follow-up was 16.4 months. The average symptom duration before introduction into this study was 7.8 weeks. With an aseptic technique, the aspiration of the bursa was done with 18G needle and syringe and then the insertion of silk suture through the aspiration needle was performed. The amount of drainage was identified two or three times in a week and stitch out was done at the cessation of drainage. Over one year follow-up, recurrence, infection, pain, and limitation of range of motion were investigated by telephone interview. Results: Redness around the insertion site of silk suture was found in all cases, but there was no development of active infection or recurrence. The average duration of treatment is 10.4 days. Conclusion: The drainage with silk suture following aspiration of the bursa is less invasive and very effective method in the early treatment of chronic lateral malleolar bursitis.

Lung cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death in the United States and worldwide. About 80~90% of cases are smoking-related and smoking cessation programs are of great importance in reducing lung cancer risk. However, the lifetime risk for lung cancer remains elevated even in ex-smokers. Chemoprevention holds the promise to further reduce this risk and thus to decrease lung cancer incidence and mortality. Over the last decades, most chemoprevention trials for lung cancer have yielded negative outcomes. Population-based studies suggest that high intake of certain foods such as soy, red wine or green vegetables may be associated with decreased cancer risk. Because of these observations and their general safety, a plethora of natural compounds is currently being studied for the chemoprevention of cancer. In this review we discuss promising in vitro and in vivo data of novel natural compounds, their interference with molecular mechanisms responsible for lung cancer development and potential implications for their further preclinical and clinical investigation.
Purpose: This descriptive study compared changes in life style and health perceptions before and after the onset of coronary heart disease in 100 patients. Methods: Data were from May to July in 2016 through questionnaires and medical records. The collected data were analyzed by a $x^2$ test, and paired t-test using SPSS 12.0. Results: After the onset of heart disease, significant decreases were observed in smoking ($x^2=17.21$, p<.001) and drinking ($x^2=43.56$, p<.001), while exercise increased significantly ($x^2=32.77$, p<.001). Appetite, stress and health state were significantly decreased after the onset of heart disease (t=3.18, p=.002, t=3.55, p=.001, t=4.43, p<.001), and knowledge about disease was significantly increased after the onset of heart disease (t=-13.66, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that continuous follow-up management programs including smoking and drinking cessation, exercise, appetite and stress management should be developed and implemented for Coronary Heart Disease with PCI.
Purpose: This study attempted to identify influential variables on smoking temptation between groups: adolescent smokers and adult smokers. Method: A survey was conducted with 376 adolescent smokers in 4 high schools and 451 adult smokers in community settings in South Korea. Univariate statistics and regression were used for data analysis. Result: The most powerful predictor of smoking temptation for adolescent smokers was nicotine dependency. On the other hand, the most powerful predictor of smoking temptation for adult smokers was self-efficacy for smoking abstinence. In the high smoking temptation group, depression and nicotine dependency were the predictors for smoking temptation for adolescent smokers and nicotine dependency and pros for smoking were the predictors for smoking temptation for adult smokers. In the low smoking temptation group, cons for smoking and process of change for smoking abstinence were the predictors on smoking temptation for adolescent smokers and self-efficacy for smoking abstention and pros for smoking were the predictors on smoking temptation for adult smokers. Conclusion: There were different influential variables on smoking temptation according to age groups and level of smoking temptation. Smoking-cessation interventions should be tailored to the level of smoking temptation of the individual smokers.
Objectives: This study was to understand the essence and the meanings of smoking experience in female undergraduate students. Methods: Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used. Data were collected by in-depth interviews with six undergraduate female students. Field notes, recording under the subjects' agreement, and telephone interview were also used. Results: In the analysis, 131 significant statements, 15 themes, 7 categories emerged. The seven categories were as follows; 'the first smoking for change and adaptation', 'becoming a part of self', 'good friend without any reason', 'a bond with friends', 'gazing with bad eyes', 'unexpected guest without realizing it', 'willingness to smoke more'. Conclusion: The results of this study will help professionals to understand the smoking behavior of female undergraduate students. We should consider positive experience toward smoking in young women for considering to plan smoking cessation program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of knowledge and attitude to temptation toward cigarette smoking in adolescents. Methods: A survey was conducted using a 52-item questionnaire in 2 high school settings. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, post hoc analysis and Pearson correlation coefficients were used with SPSS WIN version 14.0 to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences in attitude toward smoking and smoking temptation depending on gender, academic performance, religion, current smoking status, parental responses toward smoking, initiation of smoking, and the number of friends who smoke (p<.001). The level of smoking knowledge was not related to any of general characteristics as well as attitude toward smoking and smoking temptation. However, negative attitude toward smoking was moderately correlated with reduced smoking temptation (r=-.608, p<.001). Conclusion: Adolescents' attitude toward smoking and coping ability against smoking temptation were influenced by various factors related to smoking behavior and social situations, rather than by the level of smoking knowledge. In order to develop an effective smoking prevention and cessation program for adolescents, various strategies to change attitudes toward smoking should be included.
Purpose: Smoking during pregnancy contributes to the risk of negative health outcomes in mothers and babies. The purposes of this study were to review the harmful effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on fetal and child development, to discuss if maternal smoking should be criminalized as a form of child abuse, and to explore advocating for fetal rights. Methods: A variety of published literature and legal documents including the Korean constitution, criminal laws, and children's welfare laws were reviewed and critically analyzed. Results: Women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to experience abortion related to placental dysfunction. Their unborn risk premature birth, fetal growth restriction, low birth weight, neurobehavioral disturbances, and/or other complications and newborn babies are also at risk for complications. The advocates for fetal rights can assert that maternal smoking should be regarded as a crime. Conclusion: Findings show that maternal smoking during pregnancy is a major risk factor for many adverse pregnancy outcomes. Effective strategies and health policies for smoking cessation during pregnancy are required to protect pregnant women and their babies.
