  • The pattern of elongation in the developing hypocotyl of Glycine max shows that the elongation generally proceeds from base to the cotyledonary node in acropetal diredtion, although earlier elongation takes place through the entire hypocotyl. Because the differentiation of the vascular cambium in the hypocotyl advances also acropetally, it can be seen that the acropetal wave of hypocotyl elongation is associated with the acropetal differentiation of the cambium in the hypocotyl elongation is associated with the acropetal differentiation of the cambium in the hypocotyl elongation is associated with the acropetal differentiation of the cambium in the hypocotyl. The elongation of procambial cells occurs not only during active elongation but also after cessation of elongation of the hypocotyl. In tangential view, the procambium of the hypocotyl in early stage has homogeneous structure composed of short cells. Subsequently, these procambial cells elongate actively and then become elongated long cells. These long cells eventually become fusiform initials, while some of elongated long cells are transversely divided and then converted into ray initials. The characteristics of the vascular cambium are entirely acquired some time after hypocotyl elongation is completed, and the transitin from procambium to vascular cambium in the hypocotyl is a rather gradual process.

  • A case of dento-maxillofacial abnormality involving a 10-year-old male patient with a history of esthesioneuro-blastoma is presented. This patient had been treated with 54 Gy /sup 60/Co-gamma-radiation to the nasal cavity for 6 weeks and 6 cycles of combination chemotherapy of Cyclophosphamide, Cisplatin, Adriamycin, VM-26 (Tenipo-side), and DTIC (Dacarbazine) when he was 16 months of age. Five years after cessation of cancer therapy, he was disease free and transferred for extensive dental care to Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital. A clinical and radiologic follow-up over last 4 years showed root stunting, premature closure of the root apices, microdontia, developmental arrest, small crowns, and partial anodontia. Maxillofacial morphology evaluated by cephalometric analysis showed deficiency of maxillary development.

  • The propagation of cracks was quantitatively analyzed in $Al_2O_3$ ceramic using the mechanoluminescence (ML) of $SrAl_2O_4$:Eu,Dy. The bridging zones behind the crack tip were clearly detected in the crack path of $Al_2O_3$ within a realistic time frame. The magnitudes and shapes of the bridging stress distributions changed with the advancing cracks. They continued to change with the change in the applied load even after the cessation of crack propagation. Effective toughening then commenced, and the applied stress intensity factors dramatically increased up to ~50 MPa $\sqrt{m}$. The expected $K_{Tip}$ values based on the instantaneous bridging stress distributions obtained from the ML observations deviated greatly from those obtained from the measurement using the conventional crack tip lengths; rather, they support the results obtained when bridging tips were used in the quasidynamic crack propagations.

  • Sleep apnea syndrome is a common clinical disorder characterized by intermittent cessation of airflow at nose and mouth during sleep. The clinical significance of this syndrome is that it is one of the most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. It can also cause neuropsychiatric, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular complications. The standard for diagnosis of sleep apnea syndrome is nocturnal polysomnography. Because polysomnography is a time-consuming and expensive test, many efforts have been made to replace polysomnography with a simpler system of monitoring, but no method has yet been approved as a definitive investigation method. The goals of treatment for this syndrome are to eliminate excessive daytime sleepiness and to reduce the risk of possible cardiovascular complications. Continuous positive airway pressure is the most definite and widely accepted treatment for achieving these goals. Other treatments such as surgical treatment, oral appliances, and behavioral therapy may be useful for selected patients who are mildly affected.

  • This study was conducted to examine the potential of biosparging process in removing diesel contaminated soil and groundwater. The experiment was carried out lab-scale biosparging reactor and the biodegradation rate of diesel was evaluated as function of air injection rate and pattern. When renter was operated as air injection rate of 1000$m\ell$/min and pulsed air injection(15min pulse, 15min downtime), DO concentration in the renter was higher than another operating condition. The evidence for biodegradation of diesel was the $O_2$ utilization and $CO_2$ product following the cessation of sparging. Especially, air injection rate of 2000$m\ell$/min and pulsed air injection(15min pulse, 15min downtime) enhanced the diesel biodegradation during the operating. After 120day, the biodegradation rate of diesel was decreased as the lack of carbon source.

  • In spite of limited data regarding the safety or effectiveness of electronic cigarette introduced into the market as a healthier alternative to tobacco smoking, its popularity has increased enormously. E-cigarettes have penetrated the market rapidly owing to the elaborate marketing network and attractive marketing strategies. Stated advantages include the claim that they help quit smoking and produce less exposure than conventional smoking. The list of disadvantages is even more elaborate. While the majority of the studies supporting health claims and efficacy for quitting smoking are not scientifically sound, they are also challenged by studies providing contradictory results. Owing to the limited evidence on the potential advantages and disadvantages of e-cigarettes, the debate on their safety continues.

  • A 73-year-old non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patient admitted due to cough, sputum, and dyspnea, aggravated a week ago. She was diagnosed as pneumonia based on the assessment of inflammation markers, chest X-ray and sputum culture. Computed tomography (CT) scan was conducted to exclude malignant tumor metastasis. At the initiation of treatment, considering underlying disease and inflammation marker level, herbal medicine and antibiotics were concurrently used and antibiotics had been discontinued after 10days. Using the monotherapy of herbal medicine in the next 6 days, chest X-ray showed remarkably decreased infiltration in right middle lung and right lower lung. This case represented additional improvement of chest X-ray when treated only with herb medicine after termination of antibiotic therapy and demonstrated the possibility of applying herbal medicine in patients with limited use of antibiotics.
