Purpose: Upper cervical vertebrae are commonly imaged together with the jaw bones in panoramic radiography. There have been many studies investigating the possible role of mandible as an indicator of osteoporosis. But the result doesn't show unanimity. This study measured bone densities of mandible and second and third cervical vertebrae to find out any relationship between these two areas. These results may contribute in panorama being used as a screening method in detecting possible osteoporotic patient. Materials and Methods: Randomly selected 226 digitized panoramic images with cervical vertebrae shadows from 156 dental patients between 5 to 80 years of age were used. And the bone densities of second and third cervical vertebrae, apical areas of first and second mandibular molars and interdental areas were measured. The bone density measurements were restricted to the cancellous bone and the average and standard deviations and paired t-tests were done to each measurements. Results: All the measurements were statistically significantly related. The best relationship was found between the third cervical vertebrae and first and second mandibular apical areas. The average and standard deviations of the measured bone density ratios of these areas were 1.20±0.45 and 1.34±0.48 each. Conclusion: Patients whose panoramic bone density of the third cervical vertebrae are much below those of mandibular first or second molar apical areas may have osteoporosis.
The purpose of this study is to report a case in which neoplasm metastases of cervical vertebrae were found in lung cancer patient during inpatient treatment for neck pain. Pain assessment and physical examination including numeral rating scale, range of motion of neck, Spurling's test, cervical compression test were performed. As a result, C-spine series X-ray was taken under the judgement it is not a simple neck pain. Bone metastases were suspected as X-ray showed loss of C7 left pedicle, indistinct C7 left transverse process and indistinct C4 upper margin. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography were taken as further examination, and metastases of C4, C6, C7 were confirmed. The patient was transferred for professional treatment. In conclusion, this study shows the importance of appropriate diagnostic evaluation such as pain assessment and physical examination, and the need for diagnostic imaging in the treatment of patients with neoplasm history.
Purpose : This study was to investigate whether cervical vertebrae can be utilized in evaluating the growth of the maxilla. Materials and Methods : Fifty one male patients took lateral cephalometric radiographs once in every two years from the age of 8 till 14. Measured parameters were the concavity depth at the lower border of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae, and three analytical maxillary dimensions. Results : The analysis of the maxillary measurements and the concavity depth at the lower border of the cervical vertebrae in the lateral cephalometric radiographs showed that the measured parameters gradually increased as the patients aged. Moreover, while the parameters of the patients in age 8 and 10 did not show any correlation, those of the patients in age 12 and 14 definitely showed the correlations. Conclusions : Although certain correlations were seen in particular parameters, further researches and studies with various parameters and shorter age intervals are needed. The result of this study will help clinicians in making plans and evaluating the proposed treatment plans.

This report presents a case of cervical pneumatocysts as an incidental finding on cone-beam computed tomography. Pneumatocysts are gas-containing lesions of unknown etiology. They usually present in the ilium or sacrum, adjacent to the sacroiliac joint. In the literature, 21 case reports have described cervical pneumatocysts. Cervical pneumatocysts should be differentiated from other lesions, such as osteomyelitis, osteonecrosis, and neoplasms, as well as post-traumatic and post-surgical cases. Computed tomography, cone-beam computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are appropriate tools to diagnose cervical pneumatocysts.

In this report, we present a case of high cervical penetrating trauma with vertebral artery injury and outline preprocedural, procedural, and postprocedural considerations with recommendations for the treatment of similar injuries. Management involves multiple imaging modalities, including X-ray imaging, computed tomography, computed tomography angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and catheter angiography. We recommend endovascular treatment of these injuries when possible, based on the improved ability to achieve proximal and distal control and manage hemorrhage risk.
A markedly enlarged foramen transversarium was discovered incidentally on a cone-beam computed tomography scan of a 72-year-old male patient who was referred for dental implant placement. Further evaluation with magnetic resonance angiography revealed that the foramen enlargement was caused by a tortuosity in the course of the vertebral artery. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing significant incidental findings on diagnostic images and the potential need for additional imaging as part of the complete interpretative process.
A 4-day-old, male Poodle dog was presented with dull, depressed and exhausted activity after the birth. On physical examination, the puppy showed arthrogryposis, muscular atrophy and no movement of hindlimbs. Palpation on dorsum revealed an absence of lumbar and sacral vertebrae. On prenatal and postnatal radiography, lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae were not visualized. On ultrasonography, bilateral kidney and urinary bladder were observed. On computed tomography, there were no apparent abnormalities in the forelimbs, cervical vertebrae or head, while lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae were not observed. At necropsy examination, the liver, stomach, intestine, kidney and urinary bladder were normal. This congenital anomaly was consistent with Perosomus elumbis. Perosomus elumbis in dogs is a rare condition of unknown etiology. In this report, Perosomus elumbis was evaluated with radiography, ultrasound and computed tomography.
Objectives This study aims to comprehensively review research utilizing ultrasonography for assessing manipulative treatment on spinal diseases, with the goal of promoting the wider integration of ultrasound imaging into clinical practice. Methods A systematic search was conducted on three international databases (Embase, PubMed, Cochrane) up to July 23, 2023. The search included key terms such as ultrasonography, manipulation, and skeletal muscle. The inclusion criteria narrowed down the selection to studies specifically related to lumbar and cervical vertebrae. Results Eleven studies were included in the review, with 10 focusing on lumbar vertebrae and one on cervical vertebrae, all employing spinal manipulation treatment. Among the 11 selected studies, nine primarily focused on ultrasound imaging to measure muscle thickness, while two utilized shear wave elastography to assess muscle stiffness. Also, rigorous measures were taken to ensure the reliability of the ultrasonography data. Conclusions This scoping review highlights the limited but growing evidence supporting the use of ultrasonography to assess manipulative treatment for spinal diseases. Despite a scarcity of studies in South Korea, it is crucial to recognize the potential of ultrasonography in becoming a widely used and practical tool for evaluating the effectiveness of manipulative treatments in the near future.
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of computer game exposure on pathological musculoskeletal symptoms in adolescents. Method: This study included 10 male junior high school students who used computers less than 3 times a week for 1 hr per day. The subjects were asked to play computer games for 4 hr. Magnetic resonance imaging of the hand and wrist, from the distal radius and ulnar head to the distal phalanges, and radiography of the cervical vertebrae were performed before and after playing computer games. For each dependent variable, a paired t-test was performed to identify significant changes before and after a 4-hr active computer game (p<.05). Results: The horizontal diameters of the flexor tendons in the index and middle fingers were significantly reduced after playing computer games. The horizontal diameters of the flexor tendons of other fingers did not show any significant differences, but there was a tendency toward a decrease after playing computer games. There was no significant change in the cervical lordosis angle before and after playing computer games. However, the cervical lordosis angle was relatively decreased. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that computer game exposure had direct and indirect effects on morphological changes of flexor tendons. In addition, playing computer games for long periods of time can have a negative effect on normal functioning of the musculoskeletal system, with the possible development of abnormalities. However, computer game exposure in adolescents cannot be decisively identified as a factor causing pathological symptoms, based on the results of this study alone. Thus, longterm longitudinal studies on the overall musculoskeletal system are necessary.
