  • Hihg-toughened ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics with irregular grain shape and undulated grain boundary was prepared by ceria doping. Irregularity of grain shapes was increased with the amount of doped ceria. But in case of the large amount of doped ceria grain boundary was migrated to the reverse direction of DIGM. Ceria-stabilized zirconia ceramics annealed at 1650$^{\circ}C$ for 2h after twice dippings into cerium nitrate solu-tion of 0.2M and sintering at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 2h showed the highest grain boundary length with a value of 23.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ Ceria concentration difference between convex and concave sides in irregular grains was observed over 1 mol% but not observed in normal grains, Specimens with normal grain shape showed intergranular fracture mode whereas the specimens with irregular grain shape showed transgranular fracture mode.

  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics with irregular grain shapes and curved grain boundaries was prepared by ceria doping. The amount of ceria doped into zirconia compacts by a dipping method were at range of 2 to 20 mol% Irregular grain shapes and curved grain boundaries were formed only inspecimens doped with more than 8mol% cerial. Ceria-doped specimens showed large grain size and low sintered density compared with pure yttria-stabilized zirconia which was due to the increase in the contents of stabilizer and cubic phase. The amount of doped ceria was larger on the surface than the inside regions and therefore mi-crostructure and phase on the surface were different from those in the inside regions. Transgranular frac-ture mode was observed ion ceria doped specimens due to irregular large grain sizes.

  • The high-temperature strength of Ce-TZP was measured at 200, 650 and 100$0^{\circ}C$ by 4-point bending test. And its fracture behavior was observed by SEM. Below $650^{\circ}C$ of the temperature, where monoclinic fraction was almost zero, the decreasing rate of bending strength was relatively slow, but above this temperature, high temperature strength was largely decreased as a result of the decrease of stress-induced transformation of zirconia. The observation of fracture surface bended at 100$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that the fracture mode changed from intergranular-into transgranular-form with regardless of ceria contents.

  • We investigated hydrogen storage and production properties using redox system of iron oxide($Fe_{3}O_{4}$ + $4H_{2}$ ${\leftrightarrows}$ 3Fe + $4H_{2}O$) modified with rhodium, ceria and zirconia under atmospheric pressure. Reduction of iron oxide with hydrogen(hydrogen storage) and re-oxidation of reduced iron oxide with steam(hydrogen evolution) was carried out using a temperature programmed reaction(TPR) technique. On the temperature programmed studies, the effects of amounts of cerium and zirconium on the re-oxidation rate of partial reduced iron oxides were increased with increasing metal additives amount, but the rhodium amount showed little effect on the re-oxidation rate. On the thermal studies, the re-oxidation rates were enhanced with increasing temperature(300 $^{\circ}C$ < 350 $^{\circ}C$).

Capsule Free Hot Isostatic Pressing of Ceria-Doped Tetragonal Zirconia Powder Crystallized in Supercritical Methanol

  • Capsule free hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) of 12 mol% $CeO_2-88 mo% ZrO_2 (12CeO_2-88ZrO_2)$ powder was conducted at 1100~$1200^{\circ}C$ using the powder crystallized in supercritical methanol followed by supercritical drying. Porous $12CeO_2-88ZrO_2$ ceramics with ~35% open porosity, micropore diameter of ~23 nm and a narrow pore size distribution were fabricated by capsule free hot isostatic pressing at $1100^{\circ}C$. The porosity increased with decrease in HIPing temperature and was accompanied by a steady decrease in fracture strength.

Use of High-Temperature Gas-Tight Electrochemical

  • By using a gas-tight electrochemical cell, we can perform high-temperature coulometric titration and measure electronic transport properties to determine the elecronic defect structure of metal oxides. This technique reduces the time and expense required for conventional thermogravimetric measurements. The components of the gas-tight coulometric titration cell are an oxygen sensor, Pt/yttria stabilitized zirconia(YSZ)/Pt, and an encapsulated metal oxide sample. Based on cell design, both transport and thermodynamic measurements can be performed over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure ($pO_2=10^{-35}$ to 1 atm). This paper describes the high-temperature gas-tight electrochemical cells used to determine electronic defect structures and transport properties for pure and doped-oxide systems, such as YSZ, doped and pure ceria $(Ca-CeO_2 \;and\; CeO_2)$, copper oxides and copper-oxide-based ceramic superconductors, transition metal oxides, $SrFeCo_{0.5}O_x,\; and \;BaTiO_2$.

  • Much research into fuel cells operating at a temperature below $800^{\circ}C$. is being performed. There are significant efforts to replace the yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte with a doped ceria electrolyte that has high ionic conductivity even at a lower temperature. Even if the doped ceria electrolyte has high ionic conductivity, it also shows high electronic conductivity in a reducing environment, therefore, when used as a solid electrolyte of a fuel cell, the powergeneration efficiency and mechanical properties of the fuel cell may be degraded. In this study, gadolinium-doped ceria nanopowder with $Al_2O_3$ and $Mn_2O_3$ as a reinforcing and electron trapping agents were synthesized by ultrasonic pyrolysis process. After firing, their microstructure and mechanical and electrical properties were investigated and compared with those of pure gadolinium-doped ceria specimen.

세리아 안정화 지르코니아의 제조 및 특성(I) : CeO2첨가량 변화에 따른 Ce-TZP의 기계적 특성 (Preparation and Characterization of Ceria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals(I) : Effect of CeO2 Contents on the Mechanical Properties of Ce-TZP)

  • The usual ceramic process of mixing and milling in state of oxides $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was adopted in this study in a wet process to manufacture Ce-TZP. $CeO_2$-$ZrO_2$ ceramics containing 8~20 mol% $CeO_2$ were made by heat treatment at $1250\sim1500^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. The maximum dispersion point of every slurry manufactured with a mixture of $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was neat at pH10. A stable slurry with average particle size of 90 nm can be manufactured when it is dispersed with the use of ammonia water and polycarboxylic acid ammonium. The sintered Ce-TZP ceramics manufactured with the addition of $CeO_2$ in a concentration of less than 10 mol% progressed to the fracture of the specimen due to the existence of a monoclinic phase of more than 30% at room temperature. More than 99% of the tetragonal phase was created for the sintered body with the addition of $CeO_2$ beyond 18 mol%, but the degradation of the mechanical properties on the entire specimen was brought about due to the $CeO_2$ existing in a percentage above 3%. Consequently, the optimal Ce-TZP level combined in the oxide state was identified to be 16 mol% of $CeO_2$ contents.

Pt 촉매를 이용한 HI분해반응에서 지지체에 따른 영향 (Effect of Support in HI Decomposition Reaction using Pt Catalyst)

  • HI decomposition step certainly demand catalytic reaction for efficient production of hydrogen in SI process. Platinum catalyst can apply to HI decomposition reaction as well as hydrogenation or dehydrogenation. Generally, noble metal is used as catalyst which is loaded form for getting high dispersion and wide active area. In this study, Pt was loaded onto zirconia, ceria, alumina, and silica by impregnation method. HI decomposition reaction was carried out under the condition of $450^{\circ}C$, 1atm, and $167.76h^{-1}$ (WHSV) in a fixed bed reactor for measuring catalytic activity. And property of a catalyst was observed by BET, TEM, XRD and chemisoption analysis. On the basis of experimental results, we discussed about conversion of HI according to physical properties of the loaded Pt catalyst onto each support.

알루미나가 분산된 세리아 안정화 지르코니아 세라믹스의 미세구조 (Microstructure of alumina-dispersed Ce-TZP ceramics)

  • 불규칙 입자형성을 갖는 Ce-TZP와 알루미나가 분산된 Ce-TZP 세라믹스를 세라아 도핑조선과 열처리 조건을 변화시켜 제조한 다음, 미세구조를 관찰하였다. 제조된 시편들은 상대밀도가 99% 이상인 고밀도의 소결체였으며, 정방정 및 입방정상 지르코니아 입자로 구성되었다. 도핑하지 않거나 소결만 시킨 시편의 경우 직선적인 입계와 정상적인 입자형성을 나타낸데 비하여 세리아를 침적법으로 도핑한 후 고온으로 열처리한 시편에서는 확산구동 입계이동이 일어나 입계 및 입자형성이 불규칙하였으며. 이러한 Ce-TZP에서는 입자당 평균 입계같이 정상입자에 비하여 크게 증가하였다. 알루미나를 분산시켜 소결한 {{{{ { Al}_{2 }{ O}_{3 } }}}}/Ce- TZP 시편의 경우, 알루미나 입자에 의해서 입성장이 크게 억제되었고, 세리아를 도핑한 후 소결과 열처리를 행한 {{{{ { Al}_{2 }{ O}_{3 } }}}}/Ce-TZP에서는 불규칙 입자형상이 형성되면서도 입성장이 억제되어 입자크기에 비하여 입계면적이 크게 증가하였다. 분산된 알루미나 입자들은 소결과 열처리 과정 중 입자크기가 증가하였고, 열처리 동안 많은 입자들이 입계에서 입내로 위치가 변화하였다. 정상적인 입자형성을 갖은 시편에서는 균열진전시 입계파괴가 주로 일어났으나 불규칙 입자형성을 갖는 시편에서는 주로 입내파괴가 관찰되었다.
