Hihg-toughened ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics with irregular grain shape and undulated grain boundary was prepared by ceria doping. Irregularity of grain shapes was increased with the amount of doped ceria. But in case of the large amount of doped ceria grain boundary was migrated to the reverse direction of DIGM. Ceria-stabilized zirconia ceramics annealed at 1650$^{\circ}C$ for 2h after twice dippings into cerium nitrate solu-tion of 0.2M and sintering at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 2h showed the highest grain boundary length with a value of 23.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ Ceria concentration difference between convex and concave sides in irregular grains was observed over 1 mol% but not observed in normal grains, Specimens with normal grain shape showed intergranular fracture mode whereas the specimens with irregular grain shape showed transgranular fracture mode.
Yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics with irregular grain shapes and curved grain boundaries was prepared by ceria doping. The amount of ceria doped into zirconia compacts by a dipping method were at range of 2 to 20 mol% Irregular grain shapes and curved grain boundaries were formed only inspecimens doped with more than 8mol% cerial. Ceria-doped specimens showed large grain size and low sintered density compared with pure yttria-stabilized zirconia which was due to the increase in the contents of stabilizer and cubic phase. The amount of doped ceria was larger on the surface than the inside regions and therefore mi-crostructure and phase on the surface were different from those in the inside regions. Transgranular frac-ture mode was observed ion ceria doped specimens due to irregular large grain sizes.

The ceria powder is excellent in oxygen storage capacity (OSC) through the oxidation and reduction reaction of Ce ions and is used as a typical material for a three-way catalyst of an automobile which purifies the exhaust gas. However, since ceria generally has poor thermal stability at high temperatures, it is doped with metal ions to improve thermal stability. Therefore, in this study, Zr ions were doped into ceria powder, and their characteristics were further improved due to the increase of specific surface area with decreasing particle size due to doping. In this study, the synthesis of zirconium doped ceria nanopowder was synthesized by hydrothermal process. In order to synthesis Zr ion doped ceria nanopowder, the precursor reaction at was $200^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. The average particle size of synthesized Zr doped $CeO_2$ nanopowder was below 20 nm. The specific surface area of synthesized Zr ion doped ceria nanopowder increased from $52.03m^2/g$ to $132.27m^2/g$ with Zr increased 30 %.
Porous ceramic membranes consisting of $Ce_{1-x}Y_xO_{2-{\delta}}$ were developed for hydrogen permeation tests. Various amounts (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) of yttrium were doped to ceria to study the effect of yttrium doping on ceria membranes on various properties, including hydrogen permeability. $Ce_{1-x}Y_xO_{2-{\delta}}$ powder was synthesized by the sol-gel method. These membranes were fabricated by pressing and sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. As the amount of yttrium increased, the grain size of the membrane decreased. Hydrogen permeability was improved as the yttrium content increased. Selective permeability of hydrogen compared to CO is explained by electric conductivity. As the temperature rose, both the hydrogen perm-selectivity and electric conductivity on $Ce_{0.8}Y_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ improved.

Microstructural evolutions in ceria-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) and alumina-dispersed Ce-TZP ceramics were investigated as functions of doping and annealing conditions. All of sintered specimens showed the relative density over 99 %. Sintered specimens had linear grain boundaries and normal grain shapes, but ceria-doped specimens had irregular grain shapes and nonlinear grain boundaries due to the diffusion-induced grain boundary migration during annealing at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Mean grain boundary length of Ce-TZP with irregular grain shapes was higher than that of normal grain shapes, and was a value of 23pm at the maximum. Alumina particles dispersed in Ce-TZP inhibited the grain growth of zirconia particles. $Al_2O_3$Ce-TZP doped with ceria and annealed at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2 h showed irregular grain shapes as well as small grain size. Added alumina particles showed the grain growth during sintering or annealing, and they changed the position from grain boundary to inside of the grains during the annealing. The specimens with normal grain shapes showed an intergranular fracture mode, whereas the specimens with irregular grain shapes showed a transgranular fracture mode during the crack propagation.

In order to investigate the effect of cerium oxide addition, Cu-ZnO-CeO2 catalysts were prepared using co-precipitation method for water gas shift (WGS) reaction. A series of Cu-ZnO-CeO2 catalyst with fixed Cu Content (50 wt%, calculated as CuO) and a given ceria content (e.g., 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 wt%, calculated as CeO2) were tested for catalytic activity at a GHSV of 95,541 h-1, and a temperature range of 200 to 400 ℃. Cu-ZnO-CeO2 catalysts were characterized by using BET, SEM, XRD, H2-TPR, and XPS analysis. Varying composition of Cu-ZnO-CeO2 catlysts led the difference characteristics such as Cu dispersion, and binding energy. The optimum 10 wt% doping of cerium facilitated catalyst reduction at lower temperature and improved the catalyst performance greatly in terms of CO conversion. Cerium oxide added catalyst showed enhanced activities at higher temperature when it compared with the catalyst without cerium oxide. Consequently, ceria addition of optimal composition leads to enhanced catalytic activity which is attributed to enhanced Cu dispersion, lower binding energy, and hindered Cu metal agglomeration.

The performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is directly related to the electrocatalytic activity of composite electrodes in which triple phase boundaries (TPBs) of metallic catalyst, oxygen ion conducting support, and gas should be three-dimensionally maximized. The distribution morphology of catalytic nanoparticle dispersed on external surfaces is of key importance for maximized TPBs. Herein in situ grown nickel nanoparticle onto the surface of fluorite oxide is demonstrated employing gadolium-nickel co-doped ceria ($Gd0.2-xNixCe0.8O2-{\delta}$, GNDC) by reductive annealing. GNDC powders were synthesized via a Pechini-type sol-gel process while maximum doping ratio of Ni into the cerium oxide was defined by X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, NiO-GNDC composite were screen printed on the both sides of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) pellet to fabricate the symmetrical half cells. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the polarization resistance was decreased when it was compared to conventional Ni-GDC anode and this effect became greater at lower temperature. Ex situ microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy after the reductive annealing exhibited the exsolution of Ni nanoparticles on the fluorite phases. The influence of Ni contents in GNDC on polarization characteristics of anodes were examined by EIS under H2/H2O atmosphere. Finally, the addition of optimized GNDC into the anode functional layer (AFL) dramatically enhanced cell performance of anode-supported coin cells.
