  • 3D printing technology is a processing technology in which 3D structures are formed by fabricating multiple 2D layers of materials based on 3D designed digital data and stacking them layer by layer. Although layers are stacked using inkjet printing to release various materials, it is still rare for research to successfully form a product as an additive manufacture of multi-materials. In this study, dispersion conditions are optimized by adding a dispersant to an acrylic monomer suitable for inkjet printing using Co3O4 and Al2O3. 3D structures having continuous composition composed of a different ceramic material are manufactured by printing using two UV curable ceramic inks whose optimization is advanced. After the heat treatment, the produced structure is checked for the formation and color of the desired crystals by comparing the crystalline analysis according to the characteristics of each part of the structure with ceramic pigments made by solid phase synthesis method.

  • A numerical study of premixed combustion within a porous ceramic burner (PCB) is performed to understand flame behavior with respect to various model parameters. Basic flame structure within the porous ceramic burner and species profiles such as NO and CO are examined. Sensitivity analysis of flame speed, gas and solid temperature, NO and CO emission from the burner with respect to reaction steps and various physical properties of the ceramic material is applied to find the most significant parameters in selection of porous materials for the porous ceramic burner. Effects of thermal conductivity, extinction coefficient and scattering albedo on the burner characteristics are studied through the sensitivity analysis. The results of sensitivity study reveal the order of importance in ceramic material properties to get suitable burner performance. Scattering albedo, which governs the ratio of absorbed energy by the ceramic material to total radiative energy transferred, is one of the most important parameters in the material properties since it affects the actual absorbed radiation rate and thus it largely affects the flame structure. Through the study, it is found that the sensitivity study can be used to estimate the flame behavior within the porous ceramic burner more effectively.

  • Generally, ceramic tiles for building construction are manufactured by dry forming process using granular powders prepared by spray drying process after mixing and grinding of mineral raw materials. In recent years, as the demand for large ceramic tiles with natural texture has increased, the development of granule powders with high packing ratio and excellent flowability has become more important. In this study, ceramic tile granule powders are coated with hydrophobically treated silica nanoparticles. The effects of hydrophobic silica coating on the flowability of granule powders and the strength of the green body are investigated in detail. Silica nanoparticles are hydrophobically treated with GPTMS(3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxy silane), which is an epoxy-based silane coupling agent. As the coating concentration increases, the angle of repose and the compressibility decrease. The tap density and flowability index increase after silica coating treatment. These results indicate that hydrophobic treatment can improve the flowability of the granular powder, and prevent cracking of green body at high pressure molding.

  • PURPOSE. This in vitro study investigated the repair bond strength of the zirconia ceramic after different aging conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In order to imitate the failure modes of veneered zirconia restorations, veneer ceramic, zirconia, and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens were prepared and were divided into 4 subgroups as: control ($37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours ) and 3000, 6000, 12000 thermal cycling groups (n=15). Then, specimens were bonded to composite resin using a porcelain repair kit according to the manufacturer recommendation. The repair bond strength (RBS) test was performed using a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min). Failure types were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS. The RBS values of zirconia specimens were statistically significant and higher than veneer ceramic and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens in control, 3000 and 6000 thermal cycling groups (P<.05). When 12000 thermal cycles were applied, the highest value was found in zirconia specimens but there was no statistically significant difference between veneer ceramic and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens (P>.05). Veneer ceramic specimens exhibited cohesive failure types, zirconia specimens exhibited adhesive failure types, and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens exhibited predominately mixed failure types. CONCLUSION. Thermal cycling can adversely affect RBS of composite resin binded to level of fractured zirconia ceramics.

  • A wide range of possible hazards existing in thermal batteries are mainly caused by thermal runaway, which results in overheating or explosion in extreme case. Battery separators ensure the separation between two electrodes and the retention of ion-conductive electrolytes. Thermal runaways in thermal batteries can be significantly reduced by the adoption of these separators. The high operating temperature and the violent reactivity in thermal batteries, however, have limited the introduction of conventional separators. As a substitute for separators, MgO powders have been mostly used as a binder to hold molten salt electrolyte. During recent decades the fabrication technology of ceramic fiber, which has excellent mechanical strength and chemical stability, has undergone significant improvement. In this study we adopted wet-laid nonwoven paper making method instead of the electrospinning method which is costly and troublesome to produce in volume. Polymeric precursor can readily be coated on the surface of wet-laid ceramic paper, and be formed into ceramic film after heat treatment. The mechanical strength and the thermo-chemical stability as well as the wetting behaviors of ceramic separators with various molten salts were investigated to be applicable to thermal batteries. Due to their excellent chemical, mechanical, and electrical properties, wet-laid nonwoven separators made from ceramic fibers have revealed positive possibility as new separators for thermal batteries which operate at high temperature with no conspicuous sign of a short circuit and corrosion.

  • Ink-jet printing technology with ceramic ink of the four digital primary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black; CMYK) can provide stable coloration even in the high-temperature firing process. Ceramic ink-jet printing can be widely applied in construction and ceramic industries due to the advantages of accurate and fast printing process of digital images for various products. Generally, organic solvent with proper viscosity and surface tension has been used in digital ink-jet printing process. However, the needs of ceramic ink without VOCs emission is increasing. In the present study, eco-friendly ceramic ink was synthesized by combining alumino boro-silicate glass frit and $CoAl_2O_4$ inorganic pigment based on an aqueous solvent that does not generate VOCs. The rheological properties and dispersion stability of aqueous ceramic ink were optimized. Jetting behavior and printing characteristics of the ceramic ink were also investigated in detail. As a result, the formulated aqueous ceramic complex ink showed a suitable jetting behavior without satellite drop by adjusting viscosity and surface tension. The ceramic ink can be printed on glass substrate with minimized spreading phenomena duo to high contact angle.

  • Influences of ceramic filler types and dose on the sintering, phase evolution, and dielectric properties of ceramic/CaO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass composites were investigated. All of the specimens were sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, which conditions are required by the lowtemperature co-firing ceramic (LTCC) technology. Ceramic fillers of $Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2$, kaolin, and wollastonite were used. The addition of $Al_2O_3$ filler yielded the crystalline phases of alumina and wollastonite, and the densification over 95% of the relative density was achieved up to 50 wt% addition of the filler. For the cases of the fillers of $SiO_2$, kaolin, and wollastonite, crystalline phases of quartz, mullite, and wollastonite formed, while the densification decreased monotonically with the filler addition. In overall, all the investigated fillers with 10 wt% addition resulted in a reasonable sintering (over 95 %) and low dielectric constants (less than 6), demonstrating the feasibility of the investigated composites for application to a LTCC substrate material with a low dielectric constant.

  • In order to evaluate the fitness and the degree of rounding of porcelain margins in collarless metal cermic restorations, collarless metal ceramic restorations were fabricated with shoulder margins of 90 and 120 degress, each consisting of ten specimens, on master dies through the direct lift technique. And ten metal ceramic restorations with a shoulder 90 degrees were fabricated. All specimens were embedded in resin and sectioned longitudinally. The sections were observed under a stereomicroscope and photographed(${\times}$200). The labial marginal gap between the die and the porcelain margin were measured with a scale. The space between the porcelain margin and the die, that is formed from marginal rounding and cementation were calculated with a computer coordinating area curvimeter. The following results were obtained. 1. There was no statistical difference between the fitness of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic restorations and marginal fitness of metal ceramic restoration. 2. There was no statistical difference between a shoulder of 90 and 120 degrees in the fitness of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic resorations. 3. Collarless metal ceramic restorations with a shoulder of 90 degrees and 120 degrees showed significantly more labial marginal rounding than metal ceramic restorations. 4. There was no statistical difference between a shoulder of 90 and 120 degrees in rounding of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic restorations. According to the results, rounding of porcelain margins can be observed in collarless metal ceramic restorations. Thus, there is a need for improvement in dental materials and techniques to minimize this problem, Furthermore, care should be exercised during the clinical procedure.

  • Aerosol Deposition Method (ADM) is a novel technique to grow ceramic thick films with high density and nano-crystal structure at room temperature. $^{1,2)}$ For these unique advantages of ADM, it would be applied to the fabrication process of 3-D integration ceramic modules effectively. However, it is critical to control the properties of starting powders, because a film formation through ADM is achieved by impaction and consolidation of starting powders on the substrates. We fabricated alumina thick films by ADM for the application to integral substrates for RF modules. When the as-received alumina powders were used as a starting material without any treatments, it was observed that the dielectric properties of as-deposited alumina films, such as relative permittivity and loss tangent, showed high dependency on the frequency. In this study, some techniques of powder pre-treatments to improve the dielectric properties of alumina thick films will be shown and the effects of starting powders on the properties of AD films will be discussed.

  • Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a solid waste generated by the steel-scrap recycling process. It mainly consists of zinc oxides (ZnO), alumina ($Al_2O_3$), iron oxides ($Fe_2O_3$), and silica ($SiO_2$). Here we report the preparation and characterization of blue ceramic pigments using EAFD powder as a starting material. $(Zn(EAFD),Co)Al_2O_4$ blue ceramic pigment was prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The color characteristics of the pigment obtained were compared with those of pure $CoAl_2O_4$. The new pigment was characterized using XRD, CIE-$L^*a^*b^*$ color-measurements, SEM, and EDX. The XRD analysis revealed that the $(Zn(EAFD),Co)Al_2O_4$ pigment was composed of mainly the spinel phase of $(Zn,Co)Al_2O_4$. The $Zn(EAFD)_{0.25}Co_{0.75}Al_2O_4$ pigments showed a vivid blue color with a $b^*$ value of -28.64 and a good glaze stability with a transparent glaze.
