  • A 3-cell stacked anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell was designed and fabricated to achieve a complete gas seal and the facile stacking of components. The stack was assembled with a unit cell with $10{\times}10cm^2$ area, and each cell was interconnected by a stainless steel 430 separator using a proprietary sealant sheet. The stack performance was examined at various gas flow rates of $H_2+3.5vol%\;H_2O$, and air at a fixed temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. No gas leakage was found from the sealing between cells and inter-connects within a measurement system in this research during a prolonged time of 500 h in operation. The test resulted in an open circuit voltage of 3.12 V, a peak power of 149 W, and a power density of $0.61W/cm^2$, while the long term durability of the power showed 19.1% degradation during the prolonged time of 500 h when tested at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • The stability of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is strongly dependent on the magnitude and profile of the internal chemical potential of the solid electrolyte. If the internal partial pressure is too high, the electrolyte can be delaminated from the electrodes. The formation of high internal pressure is attributed to a negative cell voltage, and this phenomenon can occur in a bad cell (with higher resistance) in a stack. This fact implies that the internal chemical potential plays an important role in determining the lifetime of a stack. In the present work, we fabricate planar type anode-supported cells ($25cm^2$) with a bi-layer electrolyte (with locally increased electronic conduction at the anode side) to prevent high internal pressure, and we test the fabricated cells under a negative voltage condition. The results indicate that the addition of electronic conduction in the electrolyte can effectively depress internal pressure and improve the cell stability.

  • In order to accurately measure the high voltage of 22.9[kV] power distribution lines we investigated the temperature dependence of measuring voltage on the number of stack layers in the voltage measurement system made from single and stack voltage divider capacitors (22, 44, 66 layers, respectively). Temperature coefficient of dielectric constant(TC$\varepsilon_{{\gamma}}$/)of voltage divider capacitors which were fabricated by BaTi $O_3$system ceramics showed the variations from -2.28% to +1.69% in the range of -25[$^{\circ}C$] ~50[$^{\circ}C$]) was decreased with increasing of stack number and the stack element of 66 layers showed the least error of $\pm$0.87%or of $\pm$0.87%.

  • Effects of the shape and size of the piezoelectric materials on the performance of tonpilz transducers were studied with a computer simulation using a finite element method (FEM). The diameter and height of the donut-shaped piezoelectric ceramics head mass were changed as variables. And the effect of the stack number was also investigated. Finally, if the piezoelectric ceramics were changed to a piezoelectric single crystal having high piezoelectric constants, how the performances especially, the output power and the TVR transmittance were affected was simulated by FEM. As a result, the output of transducer could be increased to 10 times of PZT-4 with replacement of relaxor single crystal of the same size.

  • Current collectors of SOFC play a significant role on the performance of power generation. In this study a single cell stacked SOFC was assembled using Ag-mesh as a cathode current collector, and evaluated its performance. No gas leakages of the single cell stack occurred in the tests of gas detection and OCV measurement. The OCV and initial power of the stack were 1.09V and $0.45W/cm^2$, respectively, under the flow rates of air at 2,500 cc/min and $H_2$ at 1,000 cc/min at the test temperature of $750^{\circ}C$. A degradation rate of 44.0% was measured during the prolonged time of 307 h. The relatively low durability of the tested single cell stack was found to be the evaporation of Ag-mesh at the current corrector.

  • During the manufacture of a ZnS lens with excellent transmittance in the mid-infrared region (3-5 ㎛) by the hot-press process, a single-layer sintering method is used in which one lens is manufactured in one process. Additional research is required to improve this single-layer sintering method because of its low manufacturing efficiency. To solve this problem, the variation in optical properties of ZnS lenses with change in sintering temperature was investigated by introducing a Stack sintering method that can sinter multiple lenses simultaneously. A carbon paper was placed between the molded lenses and sintered into five layers. The average permeability of 67% at medium infrared wavelengths of 3-5 ㎛ was excellent under the following sintering conditions: pressure of 50 MPa and temperature of 850℃. This value is 1% less than the average permeability in the case of single-layer sintering of the ZnS lens. It was confirmed that the stack sintering method developed in this study can be used to manufacture a large number of lenses with excellent characteristics in a single process.

  • A multilayer piezoelectric transformer(MPT) for step-down voltage was made by ceramic stack process. And then, the characteristics of piezoelectric transformer, such as resonance frequency, matching impedance, electro-mechanical coupling coefficient, voltage gain, heat generation and efficiency, are analyzed. The piezoelectric transformer consists of a lead zirconate titanate ceramic with a high electromechanical quality factor. The piezoelectric transformer, with a multilayered construction in the thickness direction, was formed with dimensions 15mm long, 15mm wide and 5mm thick.

  • Scaling of the gate stack has been one of the major contributors to the performance enhancement of CMOSFET devices in past technology generations. The scalability of gate stack has diminished in recent years and alternative gate stack technology such as metal electrode and high-k dielectrics has been intensively studied during the last decade. Tody the performance of high-k dielectrics almost matches that of conventional $SiO_2-based$ gate dielectrics. However, many technical challenges remain to be resolved before alternative gate stacks can be introduced into mainstream technology. This paper reviews the research in alternative gate stack technologies to provide insights for future research.

  • The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has been developing planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and power systems for combined heat and power (CHP) units. The R&D work includes solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) materials investigation, design and fabrication of single cells and stacks, and kW class SOFC CHP system development. Anode supported cells composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/YSZ/LSCF were enlarged up to $15{\times}15\;cm^2$ and stacks were manufactured using $10{\times}10\;cm^2$ cells and metallic interconnects such as ferritic stainless steel. The first-generation system had a 37-cell stack and an autothermal reformer for use with city gas. The system showed maximum stack power of about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ and was able to recover heat of $0.57{\sim}1.2\;kW_{th}$ depending on loaded current by making hot water. The second-generation system was composed of an improved 48-cell stack and a prereformer (or steam reformer). The thermal management subsystem design including heat exchangers and insulators was also improved. The second-generation system was successfully operated without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_{e,DC}$ with city. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water. Recently KEPRI manufactured a 2kW class SOFC stack and a system by scaling up the second-generation 1kW system and will develop a 5kW class CHP system by 2010.

  • The conversion of solar energy into acoustic waves is experimentally studied. Measurements were made on the Sound Pressure Level(SPL), onset time and the temperature gradient across the stack, with the Cell Per Square Inch(CPSI) of stack changed. A pyrex resonance tube is used with a honey-comb structure ceramic stack along with Ni-Cr and Cu wires. An AL1 acoustical analyzer was used to measure the SPL and frequency of acoustic waves whereas K-type thermocouples were hired to estimate temperature gradients. As a result, when the supply electric power was 25W, maximum SPLs of 104.1 dB, 109.4 dB and 112.8 dB were detected for the stacks of 200, 300 and 400 CPSI and their respective stack positions of 70mm, 60mm and 50mm from the closed end.
