  • In order to reduce particulate emissions from diesel vehicles, mathematical model is established and analyzed on ceramic wall-flow monolith filter. A wall-flow monolith filter placed in the exhaust stream of a diesel engine can effectively limit the emission of diesel particulates through the monolith. The accumulated particulates can then be periodically combusted inside the monolith by directing hot gas to the monolith while normal engine exhaust is routed around the monolith system. The resulting low flow rates through the monolith require consideration of gas dynamics through the channels as well as particulate combustion to analyze this regeneration process. A mathematical model of the regeneration is formulated as a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Numerical solutions are obtained by using a finite difference techniques for the spatial discretization. So we can use filter simulation program for the purpose of filter design and actual filter regeneration

  • Since photocatalysts are activated by lights of UV wavelengths, plasma is alternatively used as a light source for a photocatalytic reactor. Light intensity generated by plasma is proportional to the surface area of catalytic material, and this, in many practical applications, is prescribed by the geometry of a plasma generator. Thus, it is crucial to increase the surface area far sufficient light intensity for photocatalytic reaction. For example, in a pack-bed type reactor, multitudes of beads are used as a substrate in order to increase the surface area. Honeycomb monolith type substrate, which has very good surface area to volume ratio, has been difficult to apply plasma as a light source due to the fact that light penetration depth through the honeycomb monolith was too short to cover sufficient area, thus resulting in poor intensity for photocatalytic reaction. In this study, nonthermal plasma generation through a photocatalytic reactor of honeycomb monolith substrate is investigated to lengthen this short penetration depth. The ceramic honeycomb monolith substrate used in this study has the same length as a three way catalyst used fur automotive applications, and it is shown that sufficient light intensity for photocatalytic reaction can also be obtained with honeycomb monolith type reactor.

  • TZP/SUS- and ZT/SUS-functionally gradient materials (FGM) were fabricated by pressureless sintering in Ar-atmosphere. The sintering defects such as warping, frustrum formation, splitting and cracking which originated from shrinkage and sintering behaviors of metal and ceramics different from each other could be controlled by the adjustment with respect to the particle size and phase type of zirconia. The residual stresses generated on the metal and ceramic regions in FGM were characterized with X-ray diffraction method, and relaxed as the thickness and number of compositional gradient layer were increased. The residual stress states in TZP/SUS-FGM have irregular patterns by means of the different sintering behavior and cracking at ceramic-monolith. While in ZT/SUS-FGM, compressive stress is induced on ceramic-monolith by the volume expansion of monoclinic ZrO2 at phase transformation. Also, compressive stress is induced on metal-monolith by the constraint of warping which may be created to the metal direction by the difference of coefficient of thermal expansions. As a consequence, it has been verified that the residual stress generated on FGM is dominantly influenced by the thickness and number of compositional gradient layer, and the sintering defects and residual stress can be controlled by the constraint of the difference of shrinkage and sintering behaviors of each component.

  • A mathematical model for wall-flow monolith ceramic diesel particulate filter was developed in order to describe the processes which take place in the filter during regeneration. The major output of the model comprises ceramic wall temperature and regeneration time(soot reduction). Various numerical tests were performed to demonstrate how the gas oxygen concentration, flow rate and the initial particulate trap loading affect the regeneration time and peak trap temperature. The model is shown to b in reasonable agreement with the published experimental results. This model can be applied to predict the thermal shock failure due to high temperature during combustion regeneration process.

  • Because UV wavelength lights can activate photocatalysts, plasma is used as a light source of a photocatalytic reactor. Even though plasma has good intensity for photo reaction, substrate of catalyst coating was limited by the geometry of plasma generator. Usually bead type substrate was used for a pack bed type reactor. Honeycomb monolith type substrate was used with UV lamps instead plasma, due to the light penetration the honeycomb monolith length was too short to show good activity In this study a photocatalytic reactor, which is using a honeycomb monolith substrate, was investigated with plasma as an activation light source. As a parametric study the effects of 1311owing factors on plasma generation and power consumption are examined; supply voltage, substrate length, environment condition, catalyst loading and ratio. Using the test results, the practicability test was done with simulated synthetic gases representing bad smells and automotive exhaust gases.

  • The behaviors of flame propagation and quenching in a pipe were investigated to make a design criteria of flame arrester. The effects of sealing condition of pipe end, pipe diameter and lengh were studied, and also the effects of thickness of ceramic honycomb monolith on the quenching ability were discussed. Experimental results showed that the flame velocity in case of closed pipe was increased about twenty times faster than that of opened and the sealing coditions of pipe end and length showed significant effects on it. The quenching ability of ceramic honycomb monolith was Increased with thickness and coincided well with Palmer's equation.

  • Catalytic combustion is one of the suitable methods which is applicable to micro heat source due to high energy density and no flame quenching. And hydrogen can be oxidized at room temperature with platinum catalyst. So hydrogen-fueled micro catalytic combustor with platinum catalyst can be good and easy-handling heat source for another micro devices. In this work we focused on general catalytic combustion characteristics of hydrogen-air premixed gas in 10mm scale catalytic combustor for the further application to micro scale. Platinum was coated on dense ceramic monolith which can be installed in simple-structured catalytic combustor. We investigated the effect of flow rate, heat loss and platinum percentage in catalyst-coated monolith on catalytic combustion performance by temperature distribution in the combustor. By those results we confirmed catalytic reactivity and estimated reaction area. And we simulated micro scale catalytic reaction by sliced monolith. The results of this work will be important design factors for micro scale catalytic combustor.

  • Low-density silica gel monolith was synthesized at ambient pressure by surface modification with TMCS and sub-sequent heat treatment. The mechanical thermal and optical properties of gel were studied. Compressive strength and modulus of compression of 350$^{\circ}C$-heated gel with the density of 0.24g/cm3 were 250kPa and 0.2MPa respectively. The thermal conductivity of silica gels synthesized at ambient pressure exhibited 0.02 W/m$.$K for the density of 0.24g/cm3 which is similar to that of the gel via supercritical drying and their main thermal transfer mechanism is considered to be solid and radiation conduction at room temperature. Ambient-dried silica gels were transparent blue showing about 60% of transmittance in the wavelength of 1500-2100nm and typical absorption bands of existing bonds under heat treatment at 350$^{\circ}C$. Medium scale monolity(${\Phi}$=50mm) at ambient pressure could be successfully prepared through total 5-month process period.

  • Methyl alcohol is one of the basic intermediates in the chemical industry and is also being used as a fuel additive and as a clean burning fuel. In this study, conversion of carbon dioxide to methyl alcohol was investigated using catalytic chemical methods. Ceramic monoliths (M) with $400cell/in^2$ were used as catalyst supports. Monolith-supported CuO-ZnO catalysts were prepared by wash-coat method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by using ICP analysis, TEM images and XRD patterns. The catalytic activity for carbon dioxide hydrogenation to methyl alcohol was investigated using a flow-type reactor under various reaction temperature, pressure and contact time. In the preparation of monolith-supported CuO-ZnO catalysts by wash-coat method, proper concentration of precursors solution was 25.7% (w/v). The mixed crystal of CuO and ZnO was well supported on monolith. And it was known that more CuO component may be supported than ZnO component. Conversion of carbon dioxide was increased with increasing reaction temperature, but methyl alcohol selectivity was decreased. Optimum reaction temperature was about $250^{\circ}C$ under 20 atm because of the reverse water gas shift reaction. Maximum yield of methyl alcohol over CuO-ZnO/M catalyst was 5.1 mol% at $250^{\circ}C$ and 20 atm.

  • Non-brittle fracture behaviour of the two composite structures made of two different brittle materials was investigated using 3-point bending test. First, the layered and fibrous macro-composites were fabricated using the material easily formed, yet showing a brittle fracture behaviour similar to ceramics. The layered and fibrous Al2O3 /Al2O3 composites with weak interface were also fabricated using plate of 2 mm thickness and rod of 3 mm diameter respectively. Comparison of the mechanical properties between these two structures was performed in the lights of flexural strength and work of fracture for the composites consisting of Al2O3 and simulated materials respectively. The strength ratio of layered structure to the monolith of same volume was 0.6 and the ratio of fibrous one was about 0.2 for the composites made of simulated brittle material. The ratio of the work of fracture of the fibrous to the layered was 0.47. For Al2O3/Al2O3 composites, the strength ratio of layered and fibrous structures to the monolith with same volume were about 0.6 and 0.2 respectively. The ratio of work of fracture of the fibrous to the layered was 0.6. These confirmed that the layered structure was superior to the fibrous one in terms of flexural strength and work of fracture.
