The impact of PVD coatings can be summed up in practical terms: this technology historically complements the best designed tool substrates to enhance cutting performance. PVD coatings are now incorporated in 25% of all HSS tools. The functionality is to extend the machining speed range, improve wear resistance at the cutting edge, and reduce friction at chip/tool contact areas to allow easier chip evacuation. These translate to a larger safe zone, as discussed in the failure mode diagram, for better productivity and higher reliability in machining operations of the customer. PVD coatings therefore represent an enabling technology that extends the application range of cutting tools in response to modern industrial needs. PVD coatings prolong the product life cycle of HSS tools and help this "mature" material to hold its territory against the advent of the newer hardmetal and ceramic tool materials. There is a lot of competitive life left particularly in PVD coated HSS endmills, drills, threading/tapping tools. PM HSS technology further increases the possibilities.ibilities.

Gas turbines operating in dusty or sandy environment polluted with micron-sized solid particles are highly prone to blade surface erosion damage in compressor stages and molten sand attack in the hot-sections of turbine stages. Commercial/Military fixed-wing aircraft engines and helicopter engines often have to operate over sandy terrains in the middle eastern countries or in volcanic zones; on the other hand gas turbines in marine applications are subjected to salt spray, while the coal-burning industrial power generation turbines are subjected to fly-ash. The presence of solid particles in the working fluid medium has an adverse effect on the durability of these engines as well as performance. Typical turbine blade damages include blade coating wear, sand glazing, Calcia-Magnesia-Alumina-Silicate (CMAS) attack, oxidation, plugged cooling holes, all of which can cause rapid performance deterioration including loss of aircraft. The focus of this research work is to simulate particle-surface kinetic interaction on typical turbomachinery material targets using non-linear dynamic impact analysis. The objective of this research is to understand the interfacial kinetic behaviors that can provide insights into the physics of particle interactions and to enable leap ahead technologies in material choices and to develop sand-phobic thermal barrier coatings for turbine blades. This paper outlines the research efforts at the U.S Army Research Laboratory to come up with novel turbine blade multifunctional protective coatings that are sand-phobic, sand impact wear resistant, as well as have very low thermal conductivity for improved performance of future gas turbine engines. The research scope includes development of protective coatings for both nickel-based super alloys and ceramic matrix composites.
Heterolayered K(Ta,Nb)O3/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were prepared by a sol-gel process and spin-coating method. The structural and electrical properties were measured to investigate the possibility of application as an electrocaloric effect device. All specimens exhibited dense and uniform cross-sectional structures without pores, and the average thickness of the specimen coated six times was approximately 394 nm. Curie temperatures were observed at 5℃ or less in type-I and 10℃ in type-II specimens, respectively. Type-II specimens coated 6 times showed a relative dielectric constant of 758 and remanent polarization of 9.71 μC/㎠ at room temperature. The maximum electrocaloric effect occurred between 20 and 25℃, slightly higher than their Curie temperature, and the electrocaloric property (ΔT) of the type-II specimens coated 6 times was approximately 1.2℃ at room temperature.
Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated (FCM) fuel is emerging advanced fuel material for the future nuclear reactors. The fuel pellet in the FCM fuel is composed of matrix and a large number of TRistructural-ISOtopic (TRISO) fuel particles which are randomly dispersed in the SiC matrix. The minimum layer thickness in a TRISO fuel particle is on the order of 10-5 m, and the length of the FCM pellet is on the order of 10-2 m. Hence, the heat transfer in the FCM pellet is a multi-scale phenomenon. In this study, three multi-scale heat conduction models including the Multi-region Layered (ML) model, Multi-region Non-layered (MN) model and Homogeneous model for FCM pellet were constructed. In the ML model, the random distributed TRISO fuel particles and coating layers are completely built. While the TRISO fuel particles with coating layers are homogenized in the MN model and the whole fuel pellet is taken as the homogenous material in the Homogeneous model. Taking the results by the ML model as the benchmark, the abilities of the MN model and Homogenous model to predict the maximum and average temperature were discussed. It was found that the MN model and the Homogenous model greatly underestimate the temperature of TRISO fuel particles. The reason is mainly that the conventional equivalent thermal conductivity (ETC) models do not take the internal heat source into account and are not suitable for the TRISO fuel particle. Then the improved ETCs considering internal heat source were derived. With the improved ETCs, the MN model is able to capture the peak temperature as well as the average temperature at a wide range of the linear powers (165 W/cm~ 415 W/cm) and the packing fractions (20%-50%). With the improved ETCs, the Homogenous model is better to predict the average temperature at different linear powers and packing fractions, and able to predict the peak temperature at high packing fractions (45%-50%).

This study investigates the macroscopic wear behaviors of C/C and C/C-SiC composites coated with hafnium carbide (HfC). To improve the wear resistance of C/C composites, low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) was used to obtain HfC coating. The CVD coatings were deposited at various deposition temperatures of 1300, 1400, and $1500^{\circ}C$. The effect of the substrate material (the C/C substrate, the C/C-CVR substrate, or the C/C-SiC substrate deposited by LSI) was also studied to improve the wear resistance. The experiment used the ball-on-disk method, with a tungsten carbide (WC) ball utilized as an indenter to evaluate the wear behavior. The HfC coatings were found to effectively improve the wear resistance of C/C and C/C-SiC composites, compared with the case of a non-coated C/C composite. The former showed lower friction coefficients and almost no wear loss during the wear test because of the presence of hard coatings. The wear scar width was relatively narrower for the C/C and C/C-SiC composites with hafnium coatings. Wear behavior was found to critically depend on the deposition temperature and the material. Thus, the HfC-coated C/C-SiC composites fabricated at deposition temperatures of $1500^{\circ}C$ showed the best wear resistance, a lower friction coefficient, and almost no loss during the wear test.
This paper presents the electrical characteristics with manufacturing process and performance evaluation of high performance zinc oxide varistors. ZnO varistors were fabricated with typical ceramic production methods with different thickness and the structural and electrical characteristics of ZnO varistors were investigated. All varistors exhibited high density, which was in the range of $5.41{\sim}5.49g/cm^3$. In the electrical properties, the reference voltage increased in the range of $4.410{\sim}5.250kV$ with increasing their thickness and the residual voltage exhibited the same trends as the reference voltage. In the long duration current impulse withstand test, E-2 and F-1 samples failed at the two and four shots of impulse current, respectively, but E-1 and F-2 samples survived 18 shots during the test. Before and after this test, the variation ratio of residual voltage of E-1 and F-2 samples were -0.34 % and 0.05 %, respectively, which were in the acceptance range of 5 %. According to the results of tests, it is thought that if the fabrication process such as insulating coating, sintering condition, and soldering method is improved, these ZnO varistors would be possible to apply to the station class arresters in the near future.

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT)/ bismuth ferrite (BFO) multilayer thin films have been fabricated by the spin-coating method on Pt(200 nm)/Ti(10 nm)/$SiO_2$(100 nm)/p-Si(100) substrates using $BiFeO_3$ and $Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ metal alkoxide solutions. The PZT/BFO multilayer thin films show a uniform and void-free grain structure, and the grain size is smaller than that of PZT single films. The reason for this is assumed to be that the lower BFO layers play an important role as a nucleation site or seed layer for the formation of homogeneous and uniform upper PZT layers. The dielectric constant and dielectric losses decreased with increasing number of coatings, and the six-layer PZT/BFO thin film has good properties of 162 (dielectric constant) and 0.017 (dielectric losses) at 1 kHz. The remnant polarization and coercive field of three-layer PZT/BFO thin films were 13.86 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ and 37 kV/cm respectively.
Statement of problem: Titanium is well known as a proper metal for the dental restorations, because it has an excellent biocompatibility, resistance to corrosion, and mechanical property. However, adhesion between titanium and dental porcelains is related to the diffusion of oxygen to the reaction layers formed on cast-titanium surfaces during porcelain firing and those oxidized layers make the adhesion difficult to be formed. Many studies using mechanical, chemical and physical methods to enhance the titanium-ceramic adhesion have been actively performed. Purpose: This study meant to comparatively analyse the adhesion characteristics depending on different titanium surface coatings after coating the casts and wrought titanium surfaces with Au and TiN. Material and method: In this study, the titanium specimens (CP-Ti, Grade 2, Kobe still Co. Japan) were categorized into cast and wrought titanium. The wrought titanium was cast by using the MgO-based investment(Selevest CB, Selec). The cast and wrought titanium were treated with Au coating($ParaOne^{(R)}$., Gold Ion Sputter, Model PS-1200) and TiN coating(ATEC system, Korea) and the ultra low fusing dental porcelain was fused and fired onto the samples. Biaxial flection test was done on the fired samples and the porcelain was separated. The adhesion characteristics of porcelain and titanium after firing and the specimen surfaces before and after the porcelain fracture test were observed with SEM. The atomic percent of Si on all sample surfaces was comparatively analysed by EDS. In addition, the constituents of specimen surface layers after the porcelain fracture and the formed compound were evaluated by X-ray diffraction diagnosis. Result: The results of this study were obtained as follows : 1. The surface characteristics of cast and wrought titanium after surface treatment(Au, TiN, $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting) were similar and each cast and wrought titanium showed similar bonding characteristics. 2. Before and after the biaxial flection test, the highest atomic weight change of Si component was found in $Al_2O_3$ sandblasted wrought titanium(28.6at.% $\rightarrow$ 8.3at.%). On the other hand, the least change was seen in Au-Pd-In alloy(24.5at.% $\rightarrow$ 9.1at.%). 3. Much amount of Si components was uniformly distributed in Au and TiN coated titanium, but less amount of Si's was unevenly dispersed on Al2O3 sandblasting surfaces. 4. In X-ray diffraction diagnosis after porcelain debonding, we could see $Au_2Ti$ compound and TiN coating layers on Au and TiN coated surfaces and $TiO_2$, typical oxide of titanium, on all titanium surfaces. 5. Debonding of porcelain on cast and wrought titanium surface after the biaxial flection is considered as a result of adhesion deterioration between coating layers and titanium surfaces. We found that there are both adhesive failure and cohesive failure at the same time. Conclusion: These results showed that the titanium-ceramic adhesion could be improved by coating cast and wrought titanium surfaces with Au and TiN when making porcelain fused to metal crowns. In order to use porcelain fused to titanium clinically, it is considered that coating technique to enhance the bonding strength between coating kKlayers and titanium surfaces should be developed first.
Solar energy conversion to hydrogen was carried out via a two-step thermochemical water splitting using metal oxide redox pair. To simulate the solar radiation, a 7 kW short arc Xe-lamp was used. Partially reduced iron oxide and cerium oxide have the water splitting ability, respectively. So, $Fe_3O_4$ supported on $CeO_2$ was selected as the active material. $Fe_3O_4/CeO_2$(20 wt/80 wt%) was prepared by impregnation method, then the active material was washcoated on the ceramic honeycomb monolith made of mullite and cordierite. Oxygen was released at the reduction step($1673{\sim}1823\;K$) and hydrogen was produced from water at lower temperature($873{\sim}1273\;K$). The result demonstrate the possibility of the 2-step thermochemical water splitting hydrogen production by the active material washcoated monolith. And hydrogen and oxygen was produced separately without any separation process in a monolith installed reactor. But the SEM and EDX analysis results revealed that the support used in this experiment is not suitable due to the thermal instability and coating material migration.
Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O (x = 0.05 - 0.20) films were grown on Coming 7059 glass by sol-gel process. A homogeneous and stable Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O sol was prepared by dissolving zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(CH$_{3}$COO)$_{2}$$\cdot$2H$_{2}$O), cobalt acetate tetrahydrate ((CH$_{3}$)$_{2}$$\cdot$CHOH) and aluminium chloride hexahydrate (AlCl$_{3}$$\cdot$ 6H$_{2}$O) as solute in solution of isopropanol ((CH$_{3}$)$_{2}$$\cdot$CHOH) and monoethanolamine (MEA:H$_{2}$NCH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$OH). The films grown by spin coating method were postheated in air at 650°C for 1 h and annealed in the condition of vacuum (5 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ Torr) at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and investigated the nature of c-axis preferred orientation and physical properties with different Co concentrations. Znl_xCOxO thin films with different Co concentrations were well oriented along the c-axis, but especially a highly c-axis oriented Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin film was grown at 10 at$\%$ Co concentration. The transmittance spectra showed that Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films occur typical d-d transitions and sp-d exchange interaction became activated with increasing Co concentration. The electrical resistivity of the films at 10 at$\%$ Co had the lowest value due to the highest c-axis orientation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and alternating gradient magnetometer analyses indicated that no Co metal cluster was formed, and the ferromagnetic properties appeared, respectively. The characteristics of the electrical resistivity and room temperature ferromagnetism of Zn$_{l-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films suggested the possibility for the application to dilute magnetic semiconductors.
