  • Currently. the study on structural ceramic helps to suggest the precise data of friction and wear in accordance with the various conditions in operations. Also, the study helps to predict effective operating conditions by monitoring the occurrence of wear transition. The studies in the Past were mainly concentrated in using identical materials. However, it is highly likely to have unqualified data from the differences of mechanical and chemical properties between ceramic materials. Thus, in this study, through conducting the ball-on-disk type wear testing, the different ceramic materials has been used to consider tribological characteristics between different ceramic materials. We conducted the wear test by using three kinds of specimen which are zirconia, alumina and silicon carbide against zirconia. We have changed the sliding velocity and the loading conditions in this test and found out that there is row friction coefficient and wear rate in the combination of zirconia and silicon carbide.

  • This study was peformed to evaluate the dynamic fatigue characteristics of the dental ceramics for all-ceramic crown. A feldspathic porcelain of VMK68. glass ceramic of IPS-Empress, and glass infiltrated alumina ceramic of In-Ceram were used. Disc specimens were prepared to the final dimensions of 12 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness. The biaxial flexure test was conducted using a ball-on-three-ball method. 240 specimens were tested in $37^{\circ}C$ water by testing 20 samples at each of four loading rates:0.05, 0.2, 1, and 5mm/min. 60 specimens were tested in a moisture-free environment by testing 20 samples at 5mm/min. The inert strength of VMK68 was 80.25MPa, and the fatigue parameters were n=29.1, ${\sigma}_{fo}=52.90MPa$. The inert strength of IPS-Empress was 104.76MPa, and the fatigue parameters were n=32.46, ${\sigma}_{fo}=67.52MPa$. The inert strength of In-Ceram was 429.33MPa, and the fatigue parameters were n=31.46, ${\sigma}_{fo}=258.36MPa$. 10-year failure stresses of VMK68, IPS-Empress, and In-Ceram were 20.3MPa, 24.8MPa, and 93.6MPa, respectively. Failure strength and fatigue life showed the highest value in In-Ceram, and then, IPS-Empress and VMK68.

  • We report the effect of wet ball milling conditions on the transparency of glass frit. Generally, the particle size of glass frit decreased as the milling time increased. And the transparency of glass frit changed with the particle size variation. The transparency of glass frit A increased as the milling time increased. But, the transparency of glass frit B, containing high $B_2O_3$ decreased as the particle size decreased. It seems to be the result of chemical reaction with water and glass frit.

  • In Li0.4Ca0.05AlP0.5Si0.75O4.5 composition glass, glass-ceramic having a near 100% crystallinity after nucleation heat treatment of 74$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and crystallization heat treatment of 90$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic after heat treatment of 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 h were fabricated with the addition of 4% TiO2 as a nucleating agent. With these materials a ball-on-disc type wear test was conducted in order to examine the effect of TiO2 whisker prepcipitation on ambient and high temperature wear properties of the glass-ceramic. Wear test results indicated that all specimens exhibited micro-fracture wear mechanism in ambient temperature. As temperature increased the wear rates of the materials were increased. However the in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic exhibited the lowest wear rate over the test temperature range. This resulted from the improvement of harness and fracture toughness of the material as the glass converted into the glass-ceramic followed by precipitation of TiO2 whiskers throughout the glass-ceramic matrix.

  • The present paper describes the effect of dry mixed grinding on kaolinite-aluminum trihydroxide mixture with a planetary ball mill before sintering and its influence on mullite formation during sintering. The size reduction of the mixture is market in the early stage of grinding and the obtained fine particles agglomerate subsequently with an increase of grinding time. The crystal structure of the mixture is collapsed easily into an amorphous one by planetary ball milling, of which amount increases with an increase of grinding time. Only mullite phase except for anatase as an inherent impurity in kaolinite appeared in the sintered body of the mixtures with mixed grinding as relatively lower temperature 1523K, while corundum, cristobalite, and Al-Si spinel phases, besides mullite were formed in the sintered body of the mixture without mixed grinding. Therefore, the mixed grinding treatment is very effective to improve the homogeneous mixing and disp-ersion of the mixture of raw materials on a micro scale and to decrease the thermal decomposition tem-perature by crystal structure change of them so as to obatin direct preparation of mullite with high purity at relatively low temperature.

  • Lead-free $(K_{0.44}Na_{0.52})(Nb_{0.86}Ta_{0.10})-0.04LiSbO_3$ piezoelectric ceramics have been synthesized by conventional sintering process and then investigated on the sintering and piezoelectric properties by high energy ball milling (HEBM) treatment. The powders milled for different time are characterized by XRD, FE-SEM. The powders are pressed into a pellet and sintered. It is found that the piezoelectric properties of sintered specimens are strongly dependent on the milling time. The piezoelectric properties are enhanced by high energy ball milling treatment. The planer electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) and piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of a specimen sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$ are 0.44 and 267 pC/N, respectively.

  • In this paper, a high-quality low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) solenoid inductor using a solder ball and an air cavity on a silicon wafer for three-dimensional (3-D) system-in-package (SiP) is proposed. The LTCC multi-layer solenoid inductor is attached using Ag paste and solder ball on a silicon wafer with the air cavity structure. The air cavity is formed on a silicon wafer through an anisotropic wet-etching technology and is able to isolate the LTCC dielectric loss which is equivalent to a low k material effect. The electrical coupling between the metal layer and the LTCC dielectric layer is decreased by adopting the air cavity. The LTCC solenoid inductor using the solder ball and the air cavity on silicon wafer has an improved Q factor and self-resonant frequency (SRF) by reducing the LTCC dielectric resistance and parasitic capacitance. Also, 3-D device stacking technologies provide an effective path to the miniaturization of electronic systems.

  • Sintering and dielectric characteristics of substrates were estimated by mixing rate of alumina and potashborosilicate glass(PBSG) powders. PBSG powders were used 7761(corning code)and alumina powders were used in extra pure rate(99.9%) and had 0.1 ${\mu}$m mean size. After ball milling with organic additives green sheets which were casted by doctor blade machine were sintered at 800$^{\circ}C$ for 1∼3hrs. Microstructure, linear shrinkage and dielectric constant of substrates were surveyed in order to fabricate low-dielectric and low tem-perature sintering substrate.

  • The rolling fatigue lives (RFL) of five kinds of silicon nitride balls were investigated. Four kinds of Si$_3$N$_4$ balls were fabricated using different raw materials, sintering aids and sintering conditions, Commercially available Si3N4 ball was also studied for comparison. All the balls were finished up to the dimensional accuracy of Grade 10 defined in KS B 2001 (Steel Balls for Ball Bearings) with a size of 9.525mm. RFL tests were then conducted under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress 6.38 GPa and the spindle speed 10,000 rpm. Gear oil was provided by oiled race as lubricant. The results of RFL test indicated the prerequisitic conditions for the long rolling life of Si$_3$N$_4$ball : (1) the high density, (2) mjcrostructures consisted of small uniformly distributed grains, (3) little glassy phase in grainboundary, and (4) little crystalline phase and secondary phase that induces residual thermal stress due to the differences of thermal expansion coefficient with Si$_3$N$_4$Phase.
