Lead monoxide has two phases at room temperature. One is a yellow orthorhombic phase, the other is a redtetragonal phase. Sometimes two phases are hybrided. The specificity of phase transitions of lead oxide is found during the milling of the batch including lead oxide. The pure orthorhombic phase of PbO can be transformed to the tetragonal phase perfectly by wet ball milling (milling liquid is distilled water) without thermal energy. However, when ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and aceton are used as milling liquid, respectively, the hybrid form of orthorhombic andtetragonal phases is obtained by wet ball milling. From the hybrid form heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs, this work results that mechanical phase transition of orthorhombic phase make a new form as distorted type orthorhombic phase of PbO.

Cobalt aluminate ($CoAl_2O_4$) is a highly stable pigment with excellent resistance to light, weather, etc., which has resulted in widespread use as a ceramic pigment. Due to the unique optical characteristics, $CoAl_2O_4$ is generally used as a coloring agent to decorate porcelain products, glass, paints and plastics. Here, $CoAl_2O_4$ pigments were synthesized by polymerized complex method and solid state reaction. Then $CoAl_2O_4$ pigment were grinded using the attrition milling with 1 mm size zirconia ball for 3 hours. The attrition milling process was performed at the constant speed of 800 rpm and ball to powder weight ratio (BPR) was 100 : 1. The characteristics of synthesized pigment were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size analyser (PSA) and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$. The XRD patterns of $CoAl_2O_4$ show single phase spinel structure. The particle size of $CoAl_2O_4$ measured by FE-SEM, TEM and PSA analysis was in the range of 100~200 nm. The blue color of obtained $CoAl_2O_4$ pigments could be confirmed through CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ measurement.

Fluoric acid etching is an essential procedure in cementation of reinforced ceramics to tooth surface. But there have been few studies about the changes of surface structure and flexural strength of IPS $Empress^{(R)}$ 2 ceramic according to the etching time. The objectives of this study were to examine the surface structure changes and the difference in biaxial flexural strength of IPS $Empress^{(R)}$ 2 ceramic according to various etching times. Sixty one disk-shaped specimens of IPS $Empress^{(R)}$ 2 ceramic($14mm{\times}1.2mm$) were fabricated for the biaxial flexural strength test and SEM analysis according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Sixty specimens were divided into 6 groups(n=10) according to the time of HF acid etching(0, 20, 180 and 300s)and silane/resin cement application. Each disk was loaded using a piston-on-3 ball biaxial configuration in a universal testing machine. The failure loads(N) were recorded, and the biaxial flexural strength for each disk was calculated. A one-way analysis of variance and independent t-test on transformed fracture strength data were used to determine significant differences between groups. The groups of no cementation showed a trend toward progressive weakening with increasing the etching time. However, this was not statistically significant at p=0.05 level. The groups of resin cementation exhibited no apparent trend in their mean strength values. SEM photomicrographs showed very different results of etching. Within the conditions of this study, alteration of surface topography by acid etching does not have a deleterious effect on the biaxial flexural strength of IPS $Empress^{(R)}$ 2 ceramic.

To understand the formation of core-shell structure in $BaTiO_3$ (BT) grains in multilayer ceramic capacitors, specimens were prepared with BT powders mixed with Y and Mg, and their microstructures were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and transmission electron microscopy. Microstructural investigation showed that Y dissolved easily in BT lattice to a certain depth inside of the grain, whereas Mg tended to stay at grain boundaries rather than become incorporated into BT. It was considered that in case of Y and Mg addition in a proper ratio, Y could play a dominant role in the formation of shell leading to a slight dissolution of Mg in the shell. Next, the effects of ball-milling conditions on the core-shell formation were studied. As the ball-milling time increased, the milled powders did not show a significant change in size distribution but rather an increase of residual strain, which was attributed to the milling damage. The increase in milling damage facilitated the shell formation, leading to the increased shell portion in the core-shell grain.
Tribological properties of carbon layers produced by high temperature chlorination of SiC ceramic and DLC (diamond-like carbon) coatings produced by ion plating method were investigated and compared. Carbon coatings were produced by exposure of ball and disc type SiC in chlorine and hydrogen gas mixtures at $1200^{\circ}C$. After treatment for 10 h, dense carbon films up to $180{\mu}m$ in thickness were formed. Tribological behavior of newly developed carbon films were compared with that of DLC films. Wear resistance and frictional coefficient of the surface modified ball and disc type SiC were significantly improved compared to an untreated SiC specimen, and also the modified carbon layer had better performance than DLC coatings. Therefore, in this study, the newly developed carbon films have several advantages over existing carbon coatings such as DLC coatings and showed superior tribological performances.
Ti-AI-Si-N coating layers were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid system of arc ion plating and sputtering techniques. The coatings were prepared with different Si contents to investigate the effect of Si content on their mechanical properties and microstructures. The dry sliding wear experiments were conducted on Ti-AI-Si-N coated WC-Co discs at constant load, 3N, and sliding speed, 0.1 m/s with two different counterpart materials such as steel ball and zirconia ball using a conventional ball-on-disc sliding wear apparatus. In the case of steel ball, the friction coefficient of Ti-AI-Si-N coating layers became lower than that of Ti-AIN coating layers. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing of Si content due to adhesive wear behavior between coating layer and steel ball. On the contrary, in the case of zirconia ball, the friction coefficient increased with increasing of Si content, indicating that abrasive wear behavior was more dominant when the coating layers slid against zirconia ball.

The ceramic balls impregnated with $20{\sim}40nm$ sized Ag colloid were examined for heavy metals absorption and antibacterial activities in the drinking water. The preparation conditions of ceramic ball that the porosity was excellent were as follows: starting material: 85 wt% $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$, binder: 5 wt% PVA and 15 wt% ${\alpha}-Ca_3(PO_4)_2$, heating temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, duration: 3 hrs. The ceramic balls obtained under these conditions showed specific surface area of $110m^2/g$, pore size of $120{\mu}m$ and porosity of 80%. Also, as the results of a performance test on a rate of adsorbing and removing heavy metals in the drinking water by using the.AAS, heavy metals such as Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu were removed to the extent that their content became 0.03mg/l or lower after 1 day and they showed an excellent bactericidal activity that all coliforms were killed after 3 hrs.
