Scaled centrifuge modelling techniques were used to study the soil-structure interactions and performance of a jointed rollable aluminium roadway (or trackway) system on soft clay under light truck tyre loads. The measured performance and subsequent analyses highlighted that the articulated connections significantly reduced the overall longitudinal flexural stiffness of the roadway leading to stress concentrations in the soil below the joints under tyred vehicle loadings. This resulted in rapid localised failure of the supporting soil that in turn led to excessive transverse flexure of the roadway and ultimately plastic deformations. It is shown that the performance of rollable roadway systems under tyred vehicle trafficking will be improved by eliminating joint rotation to increase longitudinal stiffness.
Slope stability of sensitive clayey soils is particularly important when subjected to strength loss and deformation. Except for progressive failure, for most sensitive and insensitive slopes, it is important to review the feasibility of conventional analysis methods based on peak strength since peak strength governs slope stability before yielding. In this study, as a part of efforts to understand the behavior of sensitive clay slopes, a total of 12 centrifuge tests were performed for artificially sensitive and insensitive clay slopes using San Francisco Bay Mud (PI = 50) and Yolo Loam (PI = 10). In terms of slope stability, the results were analyzed using the updated instability factor ($N_I$). $N_I$ using equivalent unit weight to cause a failure is in reasonable agreement shown in the Taylor's chart ($N_I$ ~ 5.5). In terms of dynamic deformation, it is shown that two-way sliding is a more accurate approach than conventional one-way sliding. Two-way sliding may relate to diffused shear surfaces. The outcome of this study is contributable to analyzing stability and deformation of steep sensitive clay slopes.
A series of geotechnical centrifuge model tests and numerical modelling have been performed to study engineering characteristics of the composite ground reinforced by both the Sand Compaction Piles(SCPs) and the deformation-reducing sheet piles. The research has covered several key issues such as the load-settlement relation, the stress concentration ratio and the final water content of the ground Totally three centrifuge tests have been conducted by changing configuration of the sheet piles, i.e., a test without the sheet pile, a test with the sheet pile at a single side and a test with the sheet piles at the both sides. In the model tests, a vertical load was applied in-flight on the ground surface. On the other hand, class-C type numerical modelling has been performed by using the SAGE-CRISP to compare the centrifuge test results using an elasto-plastic model for SCPs and the Modified Cam Clay model for the soft clay. It has been found that the sheet piles can restraint failure of foundation, thereby increasing yield stress of the ground. The stress concentration ratio was in the range of $2{\sim}4$. In addition, numerical analysis results showed reductions both in the ground heave($20{\sim}30%$) and in the horizontal movement($28{\sim}43%$), demonstrating the deformation-reducing effect of the sheet piles.
This paper presents results from a series of model tests on laterally loaded single piles with both free-head and free-tip conditions. Model tests, using a centrifuge apparatus (middie size, Mark II in 7.1.7.) were carried out in sand based on the variation of different gravity acceleration and flexural stiffness of the pile and relative density of the soil. The aims of this study are to estimate the effect of gravity acceleratioil, flexordis stiffness, and relative density on the behavior of the pile embedded in Toyoura sand and to evaluate the applicability of a family of the p-y curves which was presented by several reseachers(Mur chison & O'Neill, neese et n., scott, Det worske veritas, nondner). The Program is deviloped by using p-y curves, and it can be used for the calculation of the displacement distri bution, bending moment distribution, and soil reaction distribution. By comparing meas ured responses with predicted one it is shown that the results of the p-y curve equation presented by Murchison & O'Neill and Kondner agreed with the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests much better than the numerical solutions predicted by the other sets of p -y curves.
In this study, the centrifuge tests and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the lateral flow behavior and stability of abutment when high filling was applied on the soft ground improved by SCP. The centrifuge model tests and numerical analyses were fulfilled in the case of the back of abutment filled by EPS (case 1) and soil (case 2), and the potentiometer was installed on the abutment and fill to measure the vertical and horizontal displacement at the top of abutment. As a result of the centrifugal tests, the horizontal displacement of abutment in the case 1 was 1.4cm that is almost coincide with the results of numerical and satisfy the allowable standard. On the other hand, the horizontal displacement of abutment in the case 2 was 12 cm that is 18% greater than that of numerical analysis and exceed the allowable standard. As a result of analysis, the maximum horizontal displacement of pile was 1.26 cm in case 1 that satisfies the criterion of allowable horizontal displacement (1.5 cm). In contrast, the maximum horizontal displacement of pile was 1.005 m in case 2 that greatly exceeds the allowable horizontal displacement.
This paper is an experimental work of estimating friction angle of very coarse grained soil such as rubble mound by performing laboratory experiments. Two crushed rocks of rubble mound were used for tests. Triaxial compression tests with drained conditions were performed to measure friction angles of soils prepared by mixing the crushed soil having an identical coefficient of uniformity with different maximum grain size distribution. Centrifuge model experiments with those soils were also performed to measure angle of repose and to estimate friction angle of soil from measuring the slope of slip line in the active stress state. Model tests were carried out by changing the G-levels of 1G and 50G. From triaxial compression tests, the measured value of friction angle of soil is in the range of $41{\sim}57^{\circ}$. The measured value of repose angle is in the range of $32{\sim}35^{\circ}$. The values of friction angle are found not so sensitive to the maximum grain size of soil as long as the coefficient of uniformity is identical. Estimated value of friction angle from measuring the slope of slip line in the active stress state is in the range of $30{\sim}46^{\circ}$. Thus, the estimated angle of friction are found to be greater in the order of the measured angle of repose, the estimated value from the slope of active state, and triaxial compression test results. On the other hand, the measured values of friction angle from triaxial tests were compared with empirical equations, based on the relation between friction angle and void ratio. Equations proposed by Helenelund(l966) and Hansen(1967) found to be relatively reliable to estimate friction angles of soil.
This paper is to investigate the failure surface and modes in a soil mass by a excavation of the model ground. To study the failure surface for the excavated slope, centrifugal model tests were performed by changing the angle of the excavated slope(50, 75, $90^{\circ}$) and the ground condition($D_r$=60, 90%, dry and submerged ground). Excavation was simulated during the centrifuge tests by operating a valve that allowed the zinc chloride solvent to drain from the excavation. Results of model tests were compared with those obtained with theoretical solutions using limit equilibrium analysis method. The results of model tests show that, there is a failure to create a straight line in the low angle of excavated surface and a create a circle as the angle increases. Also, as the angle of excavated surface is increasing, the angle of the failure surface increases. The failure length in the submerged ground increases approximately 1.10~1.34 times more than that of the dry ground.

To investigate earthquake responses of structures with basements affected by soil deposits, centrifuge tests were performed using an in-flight earthquake simulator. The test specimen was composed of a single-degree-of-freedom structure model, a basement and sub-soil deposits in a centrifuge container. The test parameters were the dynamic period of the structure model, boundary conditions of the basement, existence of soil deposits, centrifugal acceleration level, and type and level of input earthquake accelerations. When soil deposits did not exist, the earthquake responses of the structures with fixed basement were significantly greater than those of the structure without basement. Also, the earthquake responses of the structures with the fixed basement surrounded by soil deposits were amplified, but the amplifications were smaller than those of the structures without basement. The earthquake responses of the structures with the half-embedded basement in the soil deposits were greater than those estimated by the fixed base model using the measured free-field ground motion. The test showed that the basement and the soil deposit should be simultaneously considered in the numerical analysis model, and the stiffness of the half-embedded was not effective.
In general, environment-induced vibration propagates from the center of source to the destination through ground. In fact, the mechanism of wave propagation is highly dependent on the ground conditions, and various methods to protect structures from such a ground vibration have been proposed. The method of wall barrier has been frequently used to cut off ground vibration effectively. However, the capability of wall barrier may be affected by various factors like constituent material of it. Therefore, it is important to figure out appropriate material for the wall barrier. This study is focused on the effect of EPS on the vibration protection. Centrifuge model tests were performed. Two types of models such as a cylindrical and a rectangular wall were used. For the cylindrical type of wall, installation depth was changed, while the length of the wall varied fur the rectangular type to figure out the capability of vibration protection.
Applicability of hyperbolic settlement prediction method to consolidation settlement in the dredged and reclaimed ground was assessed by analyzing results of centrifuge tests modelling self-weight consolidation of soft marine clay. From literature review about self-weight consolidation of soft marine clays located in southern coast in Korea, constitutive relationships of void ratio - effective stress - permeability and typical self-weight consolidation curves with time were obtained by analyzing centrifuge model experiments. For the condition of surcharge loading, exact solution of consolidation settlement curve obtained by using Terzaghi's consolidation theory was compared with results predicted by the hyperbolic method. It was found to have its own inherent error to predict final consolidation settlement. From results of analyzing thc self-weight consolidation with time by using this method, it predicted relatively well in error range of 0.04~18% for the case of showing the linearity in the relationship between T vs T/S in the stage of consolidation degree of 60~90 %. However, it overestimated the final settlement with large errors if those relation curves were nonlinear.
