  • The present study has tested most of loss models previously published in the open literature and found an optimum set of empirical loss models for a reliable performance prediction of centrifugal compressors. In order to improve the prediction of efficiency curves, this paper recommends a modified parasitic loss model. Predicted performance curves by the proposed optimum set agree fairly well with experimental data for a variety of centrifugal compressors. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool for preliminary design and assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal compressors.

  • A preliminary series design of compressors for a two-stage centrifugal chiller is suggested. Six groups of hydrodynamically similar compressors, ranging from 233RT to 1,200RT, are introduced. Flow rates, impeller diameters, and wheel speeds for each group are determined from hydrodynamic similarity to share impellers of adjacent groups. It is expected that these compressors can have the same performance and efficiency from the smallest model to the largest one.

  • This paper presents a systematic two-zone modeling for reliable performance prediction of centrifugal compressors. In order to improve the predictive capability, a modified jet slip factor is developed and new corrections for the wake flow deviation and mass fraction are suggested based on the comprehensive experimental data of the three Eckardt impellers. The proposed two-zone modeling is tested against nine sets of measured data of centrifugal compressors. The results are also compared with those obtained by the mean streamline analysis. It was found that the predictions by the present two-zone modeling agree fairly well with experimental data for a variety of centrifugal compressors over the wide operating conditions.

  • The present study has been carried out to develop a computational procedure for the analysis of the off-design performance in centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers by integrating empirical loss models and analytical equations. Losses in centrifugal compressors stem from a number of sources and their exact calculation is not yet possible. This study investigates several modeling schemes and shows that a fairly good prediction can be achieved by a proper selection of the most important flow parameters resulting form a meanline one-dimensional analysis. The performance maps for compressors are calculated and compared with measured performance maps. The off-design performance characteristics in terms of the pressure ratio vs. mass flow produced have generally correct forms. However, no universal means have been found to predict accurately the onset of surge. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool to ensure good matching between parts and it can assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal compressors.

  • A general program of meanline design and/or performance prediction for centrifugal/mixed-flow compressors is successfully commercialized using various empirical loss models. 4 types of diffusers, 3 types of exit elements, shrouded/unshrouded impellers and real gas option are included in the program capabilities. Total 16 cases of benchmark test results proved its reliability to be effectively utilized in the development processes.

  • A general program of three dimensional profile design of impellers for centrifugal/fixed-flow compressors is successfully commercialized using Bezier curves and quasi-3D flow analysis methods. Control points for meridional hub and shroud contours and blade camberline angles are arbitrarily changed to give smooth Bezier curves. With specified blade normal thicknesses, contructed geometry is instantly analyzed using flow analysis methods to be checked.

  • Compared to axial compressors, an analytical model capable of analyzing the flow in centrifugal compressor lacks because of the difficulty in governing equations for radial duct. Therefore, this paper presents a new model to predict flow field in a centrifugal compressor with a sinusoidal asymmetric tip clearance. To predict the 2 dimensional flow in the inlet and exit of the centrifugal compressor, the two flow fields are connected with compressor characteristic based on Moore-Greitzer model. Contrary to axial compressors, the nonuniformity of impeller exit pressure in centrifugal compressor decreases as flow coefficient decreases. In addition, that is sensitive to the slope of pressure rise by eccentricity. The maximum velocity exists right before the maximum tip clearance.

  • This paper discusses compressors operating number control strategy using cooperative logic to cope with variable partial load for high efficiency of a centrifugal water chiller. The cooperative logic is composed of a speed-up and speed-down controller, enabling smooth operation of compressors and equivalent distribution of thermal load in each compressor. This centrifugal water chiller design can be operated with high efficiency without incurring excessive energy waste and large transient phenomena at partial load states. Simulations in MATLAB and experiments in a real chiller system were conducted and verified the high efficiency control of a centrifugal water chiller achieved by the suggested strategy.

  • The aerodynamic design of the two-stages of centrifugal compressors in an 1.2MW industrial gas turbine is completed with the application of numerical analyses. The final shape of an intake, the axial guide vanes and a return channel is determined using several interactions between design and two-dimensional turbulent flow analysis, focused on the minimum loss of internal flows. The one-dimensional turbulent flow analysis, focused on the minimum loss of internal flows. The one-dimensional design and prediction of aerodynamic performances for the compressors are performed by two different methods; one is a method with conventional loss models, and the other a method with the two-zone model. The combination methods of the Betzier curves generate three-dimensional geometric shapes of impeller blades which are to be checked with a careful change of aerodynamic blade loadings. The impeller design is finally completed by the applications of three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow solvers, and the effect of minor change of design of the second-stage channel diffuser is also studied. All the aerodynamic design results are soon to the verified by component performance tests of prototype centrifugal compressors.

  • In aerodynamic design of centrifugal compressors, impellers are designed through preliminary design and blade profile generation. In order to find out faults of the initially designed impellers, the detailed informations about internal flow phenomena such as pressure distribution, flow separation, blade loading, etc are essential. These informations can be acquired with flow measurements or computational flow analyses. In this study, we calculated 3-D viscous flow in 4 back-swept impellers which were designed in our laboratory, and analyzed the flow characteristics which influence the performance of impellers.
