The present study has been conducted to design the high efficiency centrifugal compressor for a R134a turbo-chiller. The centrifugal compressor consists of an impeller with splitters, two vaneless diffusers, a low-solidity vaned diffuser and a volute. A cycle analysis program for a turbo-chiller was developed to obtain compressor design parameters and requirements. We have designed the high efficiency centrifugal compressor by applying the repeated design procedure including a meanline design, a 3D geometry generation and fluid dynamic loading calculations.
This paper discusses compressors operating number control strategy using cooperative logic to cope with variable partial load for high efficiency of a centrifugal water chiller. The cooperative logic is composed of a speed-up and speed-down controller, enabling smooth operation of compressors and equivalent distribution of thermal load in each compressor. This centrifugal water chiller design can be operated with high efficiency without incurring excessive energy waste and large transient phenomena at partial load states. Simulations in MATLAB and experiments in a real chiller system were conducted and verified the high efficiency control of a centrifugal water chiller achieved by the suggested strategy.
When operating a complex facility, Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) system is beneficial in equipment management by providing the operator with tools which can help find out a failure of the system. In this research, FDD algorithm was developed using the general pattern classifier method that can be applied to centrifugal chiller system. The simulation model for a centrifugal chiller system was developed in order to obtain characteristic data of turbo chiller system under normal and faulty operation. We tested FDD algorithm of a centrifugal chiller using data from simulation model at full load performance and 60% part load performance. In this research, we presented fault detection method using a normalized distance. Sensitivity analysis of fault detection was carried out with respect to fault progress. FDD algorithm developed in this study was found to indicate each failure modes accurately.
This paper presents modelling and analyzing method of centrifugal chiller which has a rated capacity of 200 RT(703 kW) through on-site performance test. Field data of chiller installed in the clean-room building of KIST have been collected, Simple models were developed for predicting the heat exchangers and system performances by regression of chiller operation data during 5 days in August. The models proposed here account for the effect of variations of cooling capacity, temperatures and flow rates of secondary fluids. The models are consistent with real performance data from June to September within ${\pm}5%$ error. The COP of centrifugal chiller are estimated under the standard rating conditions and reduced mass flow rate of chilled and cooling water.
A preliminary series design of compressors for a two-stage centrifugal chiller is suggested. Six groups of hydrodynamically similar compressors, ranging from 233RT to 1,200RT, are introduced. Flow rates, impeller diameters, and wheel speeds for each group are determined from hydrodynamic similarity to share impellers of adjacent groups. It is expected that these compressors can have the same performance and efficiency from the smallest model to the largest one.

Control algorithms for a dual source chiller air conditioning system were developed. These are control algorithms for the supply air temperature control, the supply header chilled water temperature control, the chiller chilled water temperature control, and the cooling tower water temperature control. These algorithms were analyzed by using a dynamic simulation program. Simulation results showed the energy savings and the satisfactory controls of an absorption and centrifugal chiller air conditioning system. Therefore, control algorithms developed for this study may effectively be used for the improved controls of the dual source chiller air conditioning system.
This paper presents an overview of testing and analyzing field performance of a centrifugal chiller which has a rated capacity of 200 RT(703 kW). Field data of a chiller installed in the cleanroom research building of KIST has been collected far performance analysis. The operating data included start-up, shut-down, and quasi-static state where cooling capacity and compressor power consumption varied cyclically. It was found that the steady-state thermodynamic model could be applied to relate the cooling capacity and COP under quasi-static conditions. The results led to finding the required cooling load pattern and a possible energy saving method. This study provides a method of evaluating performance of a large capacity centrifugal chiller in which field test is necessary.
In this paper, we identify the noise source and the path of a chiller. This chiller is newly developed for R-l34a refrigerant and 250 RT cooling capacity. The measured overall SPL of the developed turbo-chiller is about 100 dBA. Due to the high rotating speed of the centrifugal impeller, the nun noise source of the chiller is the blade passing frequency and its higher harmonics of the centrifugal impeller. This generated soundpropagates through the duct, and then transmits and radiates to the outer field. From the experiment, it is found that the high frequency noise is mostlytransmitted and radiated through the elbow duct, but the low frequency noise is transmitted and vadiated through the condenser wall. Therefore applying the absorbing material is an effective way of reducing the high and low frequency noise simultaneously. Measurement results show that the application of the sound absorbing material to the elbow duct reduced the overall sound pressure level by 4 dB compared to the 9 dBA reduction for the case of full enclosure. In order to control the generated noise, a dissipativetype silencer is also designed and tested. The silencer reduced the radiated noise about 7.5 dBA.
A rotor dynamic analysis is implemented to confirm the vibration stability of the high speed centrifugal chiller coupled with gear system. As the rotating speed of the centrifugal chiller under investigation is increased up to 17605rpm at the pinion rotating part, the bearing instability is getting higher and, furthermore, the rotor-bearing system might experience a few critical speed which lead to system failure due to the excessive vibration. In this study, considering the loading capacity and stability conditions, offset journal bearings are adopted for the pinion rotating system and general cylindrical bearings are used for motor part. From the modal analysis, the system is found to be stable as the critical damping ratio which shows the damping characteristics of the system are positive over all operating ranges, and in addition, the synchronous rotating frequency does not come across with any whirl natural frequency. From these results the authors confirm the vibration stability of the rotor-bearing system suggested in this study.
