Development of Friction Reduction Method between Piston Ring and Cylinder Liner (피스톤 링과 실린더 라이너에서의 마찰저감 기술개발)

  • The friction loss between piston rings and cylinder liner is due to the tension of the piston rings. Lubricant is usually supplied to reduce the friction. However, the sliding speed of the piston varies during the reciprocating cycle and is very low near TDC(Top Dead Center)/BDC(Bottom Dead Center), where the hydrodynamic lubrication cannot be sustained. Since the lubrication regime is shifted from the hydrodynamic to the boundary lubrication near TDC/BDC, wear particles are easily generated so that the friction loss becomes bigger and bigger due to the plowing effect of wear particles. In this study, for the purpose of reducing the friction loss, an undulated surface is adopted to the cylinder liner to trap wear particles. The friction force variations, which are measured by strain gaged, show that the concept of undulated surface is one of the promising methods to effectively reduce the friction between piston rings and cylinder liner.

  • This paper introduces the applications of Taiwan Earthquake Loss Estimation System (TELES), which is developed by the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE). Seismic disaster simulation technology (SDST) integrates geographical information system to assess the distribution of ground shaking intensity, ground failure probability, building damages, casualties, post-quake fires, debris, lifeline interruptions, economic losses, etc. given any set of seismic source parameters. The SDST may integrate with Taiwan Rapid Earthquake Information Release System (TREIRS) developed by Central Weather Bureau (CWB) to obtain valuable information soon after large earthquakes and to assist in decision-making processes to dispatch rescue and medical resources more efficiently. The SDST may also integrate with probabilistic seismic source model to evaluate various kinds of risk estimates, such as average annual loss, probable maximum loss in one event, and exceeding probability curves of various kinds of losses, to help proposing feasible countermeasures and risk management strategies.

  • A microstrip filter has been designed and fabricated in hairpin form on a GaAs substrate and its characteristics such as the insertion loss, return loss, and bandwidth have been investigated. The presented filter is realized with relatively small size, 4.5 by 3.6 mm. The insertion loss and return loss of the filter are 1.17 dB and 30 dB, respectively. The filter exhibits 3 dB-bandwidth of 350 MHz at the center frequency, 5.890 GHz. The experimental results show good agreement with the numerical ones. However, the measured center frequency is about 100 MHz higher than the designed one.

  • In this paper, microstrip stepped-impedance hairpin resonator (SIR) lowpass filter f.PF) by surface rnicromachining on GaAs substrate is sugsested. This filter has the advantages of compact side, easy fabrication, and sharp cutoff frequency response. The new SIR LPF shows the 3 dB passband of dc to 33 GHz, the insertion loss of 0.82 dB, and the return loss of better than 17 dB up to 25.57 GHz. This filter is useful for many microwave system applications.

  • In this paper, the design for a low noise amplifier with the EM simulation is presented. The ATF36077 pHEMT device is applied to design LNA for U-NII frequency band (5 GHz ~ 6 GHz). The matching networks have been designed by the only open ended stub in order to reduce parasitic effects generated from a via structure. Through EM simulator, the simulation result shows that the linear gain (@5.5 GHz) is over 10 dB, input return loss and output return loss (@ 5.5 GHz) are a below 10 dB respectively, and the 3rd order intercept point is about 17 dBm.

Evaluation of Soil Loss According to Surface Covering and Tillage Methods in Corn Cultivation

  • Corn was mainly cultivated in slope land during summer season when heavy rain falls so that soil loss occurs severely. Especially, soil disturbance and exposure of topsoil by conventional tillage intensifies soil loss by heavy rain. The aim of this study was to develop surface covering and tillage methods for reducing soil loss in corn cultivation. The experiment was conducted in 17% sloped lysimeter with 8 treatments including strip tillage after surface covering with rye residue, strip tillage after residue covering of several crops and sod culture, black polyethylene film covering after conventional tillage and control. Amount of runoff water and eroded soil, and corn growth were investigated. Amounts of runoff water in all plots except black polyethylene plot ranged from 152 to 375 $m^3\;ha^{-1}$, accounting for 13~32% of 1,158 $m^3\;ha^{-1}$ in control. Amount of eroded soil decreased by 94 to 99% (3 to 89 kg $ha^{-1}$) in plots of strip tillage after covering with crop residues compared to control with 1,739 kg $ha^{-1}$. Corn yields in plots of strip tillage after covering with crop residues ranged from 6.0 to 6.9 Mg $ha^{-1}$, while that of control was 6.5 Mg $ha^{-1}$. The results suggest that strip tillage methods after surface covering with crop residues are very effective on soil conservation of slope land in corn cultivation.

  • Quantification of endogenous amino acid loss at the terminal ileum is an essential means for calculation of the true amino acid digestibility of a feedstuff. Since nitrogen appeared in the determined diet or not could shift the results very much, also, none of digestibility markers could be recovered with 100% rate at the terminal ileum, the objectives of the present study were: (1) to determine endogenous amino acid losses when fed either a casein diet or a protein-free diet and (2) to examine the reliability of chromic oxide or acid insoluble ash in the protein-free diet. Six ileal-cannulated pigs ($65{\pm}1.85 kg$ BW) with a simple T-cannula in the terminal ileum were used in a replicated $3{\times}3$ Latin square designed trial, after allowed a 14 d recuperation period. Each test period ran for 12 days comprised of a 10 d adjustment period and a 2 d collection period. The endogenous AA losses of His, Ile, Lys, Cys, Thr, Val, Trp, Asp, Glu, and Ser from pigs fed the casein diet were significantly higher than those of the protein-free diet (p<0.05). No significant difference was found in the amount of endogenous amino acid loss when determined with the different markers in the protein-free diet (p>0.05). These data suggest that endogenous amino acid loss could be underestimated when a protein-free diet is used. A direct effect of dietary peptides on the endogenous amino acid loss was found when the casein diet was fed. Our results also indicate that acid insoluble ash can be used as an inert marker as an alternative to chromic oxide when measuring endogenous amino acid loss.

Nutritional Assessment of Cancer Patients in Tehran, Iran

  • Background and objectives: Weight loss and malnutrition are common among cancer patients, these two factors greatly affecting survival and quality of life during treatment. Since cancer is becoming increasingly common in the world and in order to provide better treatment measures, it is important to identify and prevent side effects. The present study has been conducted in 2010 on a sample of cancer patients in the oncology center of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences to determine the prevalence rates of malnutrition and the factors affecting it. Methods: The PG-SGA standard questionnaire was administered to 416 cancer patients to evaluate their nutrition status and determine the frequency of each malnutrition stage. Correlations and ANOVA tests were used to analyze the relationship between factors and weight loss and how they might affect the development of malnutrition. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition among the patients was 53.1% out of which 29.1% had moderate and 24% had severe malnutrition. The most common factors inducing nutritional symptoms were depression and anorexia. Some 35 % of the patients had over 5% weight loss in the last mouth. The average PG-SGA score was 10.1 with 49 being the highest. 46.1 percent of the patients scored over 9 (requiring critical nutrient intervention). Malnutrition has a high correlation with weight loss, activity limitations, nutritional symptoms, and cancer stage, but low correlation with treatment and pathologic type. Conclusion: Malnutrition has a high prevalence in Iranian cancer patients and has a close relationship with mortality, morbidity and treatment-related problems and also quality of life. Therefore, periodical assessment by PG-SGA to detect malnutrition in patients should be made so that appropriate nutritional interventions can be provided.

Early potential effects of resveratrol supplementation on skeletal muscle adaptation involved in exercise-induced weight loss in obese mice

  • Exercise and resveratrol supplementation exhibit anti-obesity functions in the long term but have not been fully investigated yet in terms of their early potential effectiveness. Mice fed with high-fat diet were categorized into control (Cont), exercise (Ex), resveratrol supplementation (Res), and exercise combined with resveratrol supplementation (Ex + Res) groups. In the four-week period of weight loss, exercise combined with resveratrol supplementation exerted no additional effects on body weight loss but significantly improved whole-body glucose and lipid homeostasis. The combined treatment significantly decreased intrahepatic lipid content but did not affect intramyocellular lipid content. Moreover, the treatment significantly increased the contents of mtDNA and cytochrome c, the expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha and its downstream transcription factors, and the activities of ATPase and citrate synthase. However, exercise, resveratrol, and their combination did not promote myofiber specification toward slow-twitch type. The effects of exercise combined with resveratrol supplementation on weight loss could be partly due to enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and not to fiber-type shift in skeletal muscle tissues.

  • This paper describes a SiGe HBT low noise amplifier (LNA) design for IMT-2000 mobile applications. This LNA is optimized for linearity in consideration of the out-of-band-termination capacitance. This LNA yields a noise figure of 1.2 dB, 16 dB gain, an input return loss of 11 dB, and an output return loss of 14.3 dB over the desired frequency range (2.11-2.17 GHz). When the RF input power is -2i dBm, the input third order intercept point (IIP3) of 8.415 dBm and the output third order intercept point (OIP3) of 24.415 dBm are achieved.
