The Effect of Cure System for the Viscoelastic Properties of Vulcanized Rubber (가황시스템 변화가 가황고무의 점탄성적 특성에 미치는 효과)

  • Rebound, storage and loss modulus, and tan ${\delta}$ were investigated on cured rubbers with various ratios of sulfur to accelerator and the volume fraction of carbon black in the cured rubbers. The rebound was increased as the sulfur to accelerator ratio and the volume fraction of carbon black decreased. The storage modulus decreased as the loading of carbon black and the strain increased regardless of the cure systems. The network structure formed by filler-filler interaction was destroyed above 6% strain regardless of the loading of carbon black, because constant storage modulus was shown at the higher strain than 3% for $40{\sim}50phr$ loading of carbon black and at the higher strain than 6% for 60 phr and above loading of carbon black. Little effect on loss modulus was found at the low loading of carbon black, but the peak of loss modulus was shown at 1% strain as the loading of carbon black was increased. Tan ${\delta}$ increased as the loading of carbon black and the strain were increased regardless of the cure system, and maximum tan ${\delta}$ was shown at 2% strain regardless of the loading of carbon black.

The effect of vitamin C on the gene expression profile of sperm protamines in the male partners of couples with recurrent pregnancy loss: A randomized clinical trial

  • Objective: Since sperm abnormalities are known to be a major reason for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), any defects in DNA structure and chromatin condensation can place embryos at risk in the early stage of development and implantation. As antioxidants such as vitamin C may play a protective role against the destruction of protamine genes in sperm chromatin, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vitamin C on chromatin and the expression of protamine genes in the male partners of couples with RPL. Methods: Twenty male partners of couples with RPL were selected as the intervention group and received vitamin C supplementation (250 mg daily for 3 months). Healthy fertile men (n = 20) were included as controls. Sperm chromatin, DNA integrity, and the expression levels of protamine genes were evaluated before and after treatment. Results: Significant differences were found in sperm morphology, protamine deficiency, and apoptosis between the two groups and before and after vitamin C administration. A significant change was found in mRNA levels of PRM1, PRM2, and the PRM1/PRM2 ratio after treatment. Conclusion: Daily oral administration of vitamin C may improve human sperm parameters and DNA integrity by increasing protamine gene expression levels in the male partners of couples with RPL. The beneficial effects of vitamin C supplementation as an antioxidant for the male partners of couples with RPL could lead to improved pregnancy outcomes in these cases.

  • The five-year national project in Japan for R&D of coated conductors and applications, named as the Materials and Power Applications of Coated Conductors (M-PACC) project, was finished at the end of FY2013. The project consists of four sub-themes as cable, transformer, SMES and coated conductors. In the theme of coated conductors, the fabrication process had been developed to satisfy the requirements from the applications such as in-field $I_c$ performance, low AC loss in the long tapes etc. Through the project, the remarkable progress was achieved as follows; a high in-field minimum $I_c$ value over 54A/cm-width under 3T at 77K was realized in a 200m long EuBCO tape with artificial pinning centers of $BaHfO_3$ by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on the IBAD template. On the other hand, the AC loss reduction was confirmed in the tapes fabricated by both PLD and the metal organic deposition (MOD) techniques by scribing 100m tapes into 10-filamments. Additionally, the mechanism of the delamination phenomenon was systematically investigated and the strength was improved by eliminating the origins of the weak points in the films. Through the development, all targeted goals were accomplished and the several results were appreciated as a world champion data.

Hangbisan, Sulfur-based Oriental Medicine, Lowers the Blood Cholesterol Level of ob/ob Obese Mice (유전성 비만 마우스에 대한 항비산의 혈중 콜레스테롤 저하 효과)

  • Among oriental medicine, sulfur is known to generate heat in the human body. Since body warming reaction results in the consumption of energy source, the medicines containing sulfur could help in the weight loss of laboratory rats. This study was designed to determine the possible weight loss effects of Hangbisan, sulfur based oriental medicine, on ob/ob mice. The obese mice were fed with standard diet containing 10% (w/w) Hangbisan or 10% (w/w) cellulose during 12 weeks. Hangbisan affected the weight loss of obese mice as cellulose did during experimental periods, while also reducing the level of plasma total cholesterol. These results suggest that dietary Hangbisan improved the composition of blood profiles in obese mice, and therefore has potential as an anti-obesity ingredient in the application of oriental medicine compounds.

A Study of a Wideband Acoustic Transducer for Underwater Communication Using 1-3 Type Piezoelectric Transducer (1-3형 압전 복합체를 이용한 광대역 수중 통신용 음향 트랜스듀서에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, many researches in relation to data transmission with faster speed and greater volume, many researches have been carried out on sonar systems for underwater communication. According to these researches, an acoustic transducer for underwater communication requires wide bandwidth properties. In domestic researches for underwater communication sonar, an operating frequency in the range of $20{\sim}40\;kHz$ is used. In this paper, we propose anon-resonance type acoustic transducer for underwater communication. The TVR (transmitting voltage response) characteristics increased linearly as the frequency increased, and the RVS (receiving voltage sensitivity) characteristics were constant as the frequency increased. Traditional techniques for wide bandwidth transducershave a limit and a transmission loss difference at lower and higher frequency operating ranges. In this paper, the new transducer proposed decreased the transmission loss under some conditions. It was optimized with the FE analysis tool (ATILA) and evaluated using the TVR and the RVS characteristics in the range of $10{\sim}90\;kHz$. The value of TVR was 138 dB at 20 kHz and 148 dB at 40 kHz, and the differences was 12 dB. The value of RVS was $195{\pm}2\;dB$ and nearly constant. From theseresults, it is certain that the developed transducers can be used for an underwater communication network in the 1.3 km range with both a 20 kHz bandwidth and 30 kHz center frequency.

Performance Predictions of Gas Foil Thrust Bearings with Turbulent Flow (난류 유동을 갖는 가스 포일 스러스트 베어링의 성능 예측)

  • Gas foil thrust bearings (GFTBs) support axial loads in oil-free, high speed rotating machinery using air or gas as a lubricant. Due to the inherent low viscosity of the lubricant, GFTBs often have super-laminar flows in the film region at operating conditions with high Reynolds numbers. This paper develops a mathematical model of a GFTB with turbulent flows and validates the model predictions against those from the literature. The pressure distribution, film thickness distribution, load carrying capacity, and power loss are predicted for both laminar and turbulent flow models and compared with each other. Predictions for an air lubricant show that the GFTB has high Reynolds numbers at the leading edge where the film thickness is large and relatively low Reynolds numbers at the trailing edge. The predicted load capacity and power loss for the turbulent flow model show little difference from those for the laminar flow model even at the highest speed of 100 krpm, because the Reynolds numbers are smaller than the critical Reynolds number. On the other hand, refrigerant (R-134a) lubricant, which has a higher density than air, had significant differences due to high Reynolds numbers in the film region, in particular, near the leading and outer edges. The predicted load capacity and power loss for the turbulent flow model are 2.1 and 2.3 times larger, respectively, than those for the laminar flow model, thus implying that the turbulent flow greatly affects the performance of the GFTB.

Analysis of Heat Loss with Mirror Array and Receiver Shapes on the Dish Solar Collector (반사경 배치 및 흡수기 형상에 따른 접시형 태양열 집열기의 열손실 해석)

  • The radiative heat loss from a receiver of a dish solar collector is numerically investigated. The dish solar collector considered in this paper consists of a receiver and multi-faceted mirrors. In order to investigate the performance comparison of dish solar collectors, six different mirror arrays and four different receivers are considered. A parabolic- shaped perfect mirror of which diameter is 1.40 m is considered as the reference for the mirror arrays. The other mirror arrays which consist of twelve identical parabolic-shaped mirror facets of which diameter are 0.405 m are suggested for comparison. Their reflecting areas, which are 1.545 $m^{2}$, are the same. Four different receiver shapes are a conical, a dome, a cylindrical, and a unicorn type. The radiative properties of the mirror surfaces and the receiver surfaces may vary the thermal performance of the dish solar collector so that various surface properties are considered. In order to calculate the radiative heat loss in the receiver, two kinds of methods are used. The Net Radiation Method that is based on the radiation heat balance on the surface is used to calculate the radiation heat transfer rate from the inside surface of the receiver to the environment. The Monte-Carlo Method that is the statistical approach is adopted to predict the radiation heat transfer rate from the reflector to the receiver. The collector efficiency is defined as the results of the optical efficiency and the receiver efficiency. Based on the calculation, the unicorn type has the best performance in receiver shapes and the STAR has the best performance in mirror arrays except the perfect mirror.

A Study on Life Time Prediction of ACM Rubber Composite Using Accelerated Test and Thermogravimetric Analysis (노화촉진시험법 및 TGA를 이용한 ACM 고무복합재료의 수명 예측 연구)

  • Compression set (CS) and weight loss by thermal degradation of the ACM rubber composite sample prepared for an automotive part were measured simultaneously at several given temperatures of $150^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$, and $180^{\circ}C$. Using the relationship between them, thermal life of the sample could be predicted at a given operating temperature by applying Toops method which is based on the analysis of non-isothermal TGA thermograms. Conversion by weight loss showed a linear relationship with CS changes, exhibiting 4.2% at CS 40%. Activation energy of thermal degradation was calculated as 120.2 kJ/mol at 4.2% of weight loss from Flynn-Wall-Ozawa analysis. When the expected life was set as time to reach CS 40% at $120^{\circ}C$, the life time of the sample was calculated as 9,700 hrs when Toops method was applied.

  • Gas foil bearings (GFBs) enable small- to medium-sized turbomachinery to operate at ultra-high speeds in a compact design by using ambient air or process gas as a lubricant. When using air or process gas, which have lower viscosity than lubricant oil, the turbomachinery has the advantage of reduced power loss from bearing friction drag. However, GFBs may have high Reynolds number, which causes turbulent flows due to process gas with low viscosity and high density. This paper analyzes gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) with high Reynolds numbers and studies the effects of turbulent flows on the static and dynamic performance of bearings. For comparison purposes, air and R-134a gas lubricants are applied to the GFJBs. For the air lubricant, turbulence is dominant only at rotor speeds higher than 200 krpm. At those speeds, the journal eccentricity decreases, but the film thickness, power loss, and direct stiffness and damping coefficients increase. On the other hand, the R-134a gas lubricant, which that has much higher density than air, causes dominant turbulence at rotor speeds greater than 10 krpm. The turbulent flow model predicts decreased journal eccentricity but increased film thickness and power loss when compared with the lamina flow model predictions. The vertical direct stiffness and damping coefficients are lower at speeds below 100 krpm, but higher beyond that speeds for the turbulent model. The present results indicate that turbulent flow effects should be considered for accurate performance predictions of GFJBs with high Reynolds number.

Slaves Observed in Chinese Poem (한국 한시에 나타난 노비)

  • Slaves have been investigated around diaries or slave ownership papers of nobilities up to now. While slaves were described in tales or stories on loyal slaves or historic tales, slaves were not sufficiently examined. This paper analyzed the actual awareness on slaves through the description on slaves in Chinese poem. It was generally very difficult to deal with young slaves because young slaves were included in the lowest class without education and not an adult. The fugitive slaves were loss of labor and brought the emotional betrayal. There were spells to make fugitive slaves return. The sense of loss was nearly same in the death of slaves as in the death of family members. The longer the slaves lived with owners, the greater the sense of loss was. However, the difference of awareness on slaves per period was not identified in this paper. It can be identified only by fully examining more data on slaves. It will be the theme of further study.
